I remember listening to this song as a child understanding the words but not the meaning. Now twenty years later looking at the world, the war in the Middle East, the return of antisemitism I can understand the soul of the Jews. Persecuted, killed, robbed, and exterminated all over the world for centuries. This song brings out so much of what it is to be a Russian Jew.

The key is to find peace, understanding. Shufatinsky was Russian and Jewish. He sang in Russian. What about the mixed heritage and being citizens of this world?
