Ella's voice is so clean.. And she really was as known for singing a melody faithfully as she was later for scatting improvisationally. I love Billie, but it's hard to hear the melody in her version, and she often invented new intervals. This is a new one for me to really listen to. I appreciate being educated here by anyone who knows what they're talking about. LOL Best to all u music lovers...the fact that we are listening to THIS suggests volumes about our intentions alone, I'd say.
she's a great singer!!! And to think I had never heard her sing before, until today... what a beautiful way to make my soul feel thrilled.... and to think of my own prelude to a kiss... Thank you so much!
Are you talking about the last syllables in melody and symphony? I like that too. I sing it with the flat nines. This performance of Ella's is so natural sounding and relaxed, but I do wish she would have done the flat nines at least in the second time around.
@rasjvon Being a 42 year old fanboy is geeky. This is a jazz vid; not a pre-teen-pop-princess vid. That means musical discourse is welcome. People don't have to have Ella's abilities to have the right to assert their opinions about the music. Jazz lovers don't do this to down the musician. It's part of a process of music appreciation and having meaningful conversation about artistry. It's not about idol worship in jazz; it's about the music.
@nac1988 yes too bad that ella didn't sing the flat nine! if only she knew about the harmony in the song that you learned from the realbook, then she totally would have been more killing! dumbass.
@flipadiddle Actually, it is not about me at all. I do think Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday, who do recognise the beautiful tention in that part, both have versions that are "more killing" than Ella's. I don't know why such a remark makes you insult other people, but i guess internet brings out the worst in some people. Too bad!

Besides the delicious voice of Ella, we are also gifted by a solo performed by the unmistakable sax of Ben Webster.

Who's the jazz violinist? Joe Venuti? This is a beautiful piece. Thanks for taking the initiative to upload it.

@CriticalListener Sounds more like Ray Nance and Paul Gonsalves on tenor. Both Duke Ellington guys.

This is by far the best vocal version of a difficult song to handle. Very, very nice.

Ella simplifies the song here; in the bridge she sings regular nines in stead of flat nines. Too bad!
