Jigoku Shoujo (Hell Girl), Kanon, and thats basicly it for me im suprised Ive been through alot of these favorite anime or favorite anime openings no one likes Elfen Lied or Clannad or Fairy Tail and im shocked no Vampire Knight???? Oh well ppl have there own taste I guessDX
I thiught you were right to put Sakura at number 3, it deserves to be in such a high rank I also liked how you used the longer version of it rather than the shorter one. The Kanon opening started to really grow on me after a while, now I think it's awesome
I'm glad Jigoku Shoujo Futakomori ranked so high. Its honestly one of my favorite anime intros; song and video. Its very dynamic; less bleak than the original, but more entertaining.
Honestly, though, its the most redeeming quality of the series. I found it fell very short of the expectations brought about by the first season. Perhaps Mitsuganae (The third season) Will be better.
I don't have high hopes for the live action series, based on what I hear.
Yes, the ending of the second season, I felt, didn't have as much of an impact as the first. I have seen a few episodes of Mitsuganae, and the initial story seems a lot more mysterious (it reminded me of the first season a lot).
Why didn't I go with Evangelion, you asked. Cause even though it's full of meanings and symbols, it didn't fit to my taste. Even if it is the greatest piece of art in world if I doesn't fit to my taste, then I don't have to like it (subjective understanding of reality). That being said, I do like Evangelion and Lucy openings, but I like some other openings even more.
First of all you didn't ask me what I think about anime studios. You asked me WHAT IS "ART WITH A MEANING" and secondly why is this turning to a flame war? I simply complimented you on your video and then answered your questions. If I have offended you in someway, I apologize. English isn't my 1st language.
An artist is concept here, not necessarily a person. But it is true that a collective idea form by many differs from one persons vision. By making a collective idea with many people and then working with that idea, each worker brings a new view to the end result. Thus the artists truth is even harder to decode, but that doesnt necessarily mean that the secondary truth is affected by this.
But as we beholders are absorbing that artists truth, every one of us also interpret it based on our own experience and knowledge. In the end forming an own subjective understanding of the artists truth, in other words a beholder gives the work of art its secondary meaning of truth.
Trying to act all philosophical is nice and all, but so is acting logical.
An opening is no more than the context of the series set to a song selected by the higher ups of the production staff. The manga-ka has nothing to do with the choice of opening, nor what goes into it.
That's why some series get openings that make little to no sense.
Art is subjective understanding of an inner meaning implied in the work of the artist. Art can be an allegory or a message, but most of all its a vision of the artists truth. That truth is the subjective understanding that the artist has about his own work. Meaning that art with a meaning implies to artists ability to get his own truth to the beholder.
Yes, I agree with you on that definition. Art without a meaning is not really art at all.
But what makes art awesome for me, or makes me like a certain piece of art, are the feelings and emotions that the piece awakens (during the experience), or the the feelings towards that piece (which makes you a fan of a certain piece).
For me, it's not enough to understand the meaning, but to feel it. This is something that, in my opinion, you kind of forgot.
To me visuals and music must have dept to be thoroughly awesome. Art without meaning is just pretty pictures and catchy songs... Or maybe I'm just getting old. D':
Would have liked seeing Gunslinger Girl, Gun Smith Cats, Mitchiko to Hatchin or Spice and Wolf opening. But liked I wrote, everybody has different tastes in visuals and sounds.
First of all I'm not saing that any of these openings are bad (they are all great), but I like some more than others. Not being able to watch part 2 really hurts the overall opinion. The ones I rate lower are: 16 & 8 I hate 3DCG that doesn't blend with rest of the animation, 7 at first it was the most overrated series and now it's most underrated nevertheless didn't do it for me, 5 good opening but not great, 1 awesome opening but not my number one choice (just commenting on number 1 position).
Great countdown. You have really good and refined taste. That being said, some of your choices didn't strike me as being that awesome, but taste is subjective.
Ah, but so did my choices. The reason why I picked Planetes is because the opening is full of symbolic meanings. It shows archaeologic understanding of ancient view of the sky. It almost parodies itself by intruducing it's "cast" like real life TV soap operas. It also showcases all most important advances in space science. How many anime openings do you know that actually are educational?
Okay I'm there too and that isn't an argument. granted he has pulled back-looks back at the first 8 volumes since I own the first 20-okay he's pulled back alot. but it's still there. I'm just surprise so many girls are into the comic. but as I commented on that podcast when your used to Ken's stuff from other people it's really tame and hardly even there aside from some cheesecake half the time, just like an american comic, thou admitting with 15 year old girls.
Well, I've read Ken's other work, I've even completed the Love Hina manga, and Negima is exceptionally tame in comparison.
You forgot the other half of the equation, the 9/10 year old Negi, the youngest player in all of manga.
Yeah, it's still there, but these days Negi's more focused on defeating Fate and getting stronger. Plus, we just had a side-arc about the Queen of Calamity, Arika, where it was only ecchi once, amazingly.
yeah Ken's got a slope if you look at it. My Santa and the begining of AI Love You were tame well arted works that really didn't use Ecchi outside a normal focus on dress. but when he had to gain folks I'm seeing his editor encouraging the sex thing working because of his detail work. it pans out and he does love hina with that style from the start, that does even better but now he wants and action manga, so of course he pulls a reverse of AI love you and takes out sex as it goes.
Of course, Ken is the master of the 'pantsu' shot, which might be why either he got the brilliant idea to exploit this gift, or someone else told him to do it.
Negima!?, the re-telling (not a second season), is more-or-less probably what Ken originally had planed out for Negima, which is probably why he authorised the anime in the first place (despite the idea for !? not being his).
nana is also one of my favorites!

@AlekSensej What about them? They're overly generic.

@iOniV2 Generic like the mane character all ways wins?
Overly generic is a pleonasm.
Now that you says I have never seen a anti-hero manga.

I just love how it melded so well with the music.

You know, you're really, really idealising the animation process.
I hate to break it to you, but all that really happens in those studios is this:
Key animations are drawn up, followed by a lot of animators filling the games on their computer programs (no, there is no hand drawing going on).
iOniV2 2 years ago

Define "art with a meaning". I'm interested in knowing.

Yes, I am also interested. Considering Kanon is just a run of the mill harem and all.

I personally didn't thinl GG or GSC were good enough for the top 20, and I haven't seen the other two.

And, well, what would be YOUR number 1 choice?

My number 1 choice would have been the opening of Planetes. I just love that opening, but I also know many who don't.

iOniV2 2 years ago
NANA!?!?!?! #1 = fail
at least you have Kanon for #2 it a masterpiece
hdgamer123 2 years ago
Is that your only reason? Are you afraid of Shoujo series or something?
And Kanon is far from being a masterpiece, Air was a much better anime.
iOniV2 2 years ago
Well, To you.
Express cartoons as an art form, each has tastes to different audiences.

I still laugh at the fact the podcast I listen two referenced Negima by saying no matter what you defend they wouldn't read it.....Pervs.
which is true, for the comics anyway.
BrokenFWD 2 years ago
Well, their choice, right?
Of course, the easy defence for that is that it's only an ecchi series for the first 8 volumes, seeing as I am on the latest chapter and all.
