Love Ferrocerium rods for fire starting. If you want a really wicked combo, buy a carbide knife sharpener to use as a scraper. Search for "Speedy Sharp". Makes an avalanche of sparks. :)

@MrDarkJester Btw, I wouldn't actually use the carbide sharpener to sharpen any good knives if you have a good stone available. The carbide will literally peel metal off a knife and is almost guaranteed to ruin an edge on a high end knife. It's good in a pinch if you got a cheap hatchet that got chewed up by rocks or something though to take nicks out of the blade.

@crzyrpr2000 Willapoo is partially right. It's ferrocerium, which contains a bit of magnesium and a bunch of other metals. It's the same thing that the "flint" in most lighters is made of. A bit hypocritical to call someone a dumbass and tell them to do research when you didn't do any yourself.

You can't just use paper!? You need something lighter and more flammable, like cotton wool or something which will act as the starter. Then you built the fire up using bigger and bigger fuels eventually making a fire.

to all of you saying "buy a lighter" you've obviously never been in a backpacking/climbing/camping situation. lighters get wet, they don't work until they're dry. these work ALL the time, and they don't run out of flint/fluid and they're HOT. plus they take up less space than a lighter, usually.

Really nice! My husband and daughters would love it,good ones are hard to find. We recently heard about using dryer lint to start a fire. It works so well, catches and burns hot and fast. I take empty toilet paper rolls and stuff them with the lint. They always grab one if there heading out to make a fire!

@NickLovesScreamo Lighters aren't nearly as reliable though... Even a zippo will run out of lighter fluid eventually, whether through use or or through evaporation. A butane lighter is just a bad option if you need it to work 100% of the time because they are horribly unreliable. Fire steel/ any flint is a better option almost all of the time.
