Can I clear things up for you?

He was born in Manhatten. Born American.

He spent the last 40 years of his life in Britain. So he was a european legally, but he was an American in reality. He never adopted a stupid accent, which makes me happy, because England gets all of the best people ever, and America has the best director ever!

Probably because he lived and worked in the UK for almost 40 years.
