In my opinion, the best finish to a road race EVER. (Ricky Craven and Kurt Busch at Darlington in 2003 beats it out for the best ever... but only by the slimmest of margins. And Sebring was a better race--and this coming from someone who started out with NASCAR!)
No penalties were issued; the officials ruled it hard, clean, take-no-prisoners racing. THIS is why I love this sport.
I would send the Ferrari team a bill for a new side panels. Great to see the cars so close at the finish, but that has to be the worst pass in AMLS racing history.
but thats racing.... i would get out, in the middle of the after conference and i would throw my helmet at him... I DONT CARE ABOUT THE 10,000 DOLAR FINE..... as long as he tastes the side of my helmet as he did to my car...

@alexalvesjr If they were fat they wouldn't be able to get in the car, and ovals are exciting if you actual sit down and watch it! (CRASHER!)
You don't know anything about Le Mans racing, every race is like this they always make contact. There's a reason Jorg Bergmeister is one of the best drivers in the sport, and one the whole championship the year before. Something your American car loving ass knows nothing about.
@FlyingLizard44 I don't, but I was defending NASCAR because an ignorant dude commented about it so I commented back. i wouldnt have clipped cars. if u want to recklossly hit to win watch nascar. if u have a good run from the outside to inside theres no need to hit. as it showed the farrari has a nicer final gear. if u can drive a nice clean race without having to hit than yeah your worthy to race ALMS, bumping an hitting to keep an get the lead, go to nascar.
He didnt recklossly push him off...but that what makes racing exciting. Come on, racing is rubbin, It wouldv'e been better if he passed him cleanly, but i dont think mello had an option....it was either pass him while pushing him...or just not winning at all.
no if u watch the other videos it will show you that he didnt have to him but that he chose to hit him. both times once after 16 and then the other after 17. yeah push but need to HIT the car to get it.
between 1:48 and 1:50 he hits him to try and push. thats when the contact begins, yes more of it was done in 17. either way farrari has been known to do such things.

To me, this announcing team (Leigh Diffey, Dorsey Schroeder and Calvin Fish) reminds me of the Page/Posey/Unser team at the Indy 500, it's a similar style and passion for the sport.
no it was not. this race had just two cautions and the second was over three hours from the finish. plus, the American Le Mans Series has real production-based GT cars and exotic Le Mans Prototypes.
I watched this live - great moment. Even better as I was supporting Melo and Salo in the Risi Ferrari. They won the 24 hrs of Le Mans just a few days ago - great team and always exciting to watch.
The Ferrari deserved to go into the wall ;). If Bergmeister would have driven like Melo, Melo would have been in the wall much earlier in the lap. But a lot of the times it's the driver that is the most brutal that will win. Sadly gentleman drivers don't always win.
i was there up in a pit box for the first time in the 5 or so years i've been going. it was def pretty exciting finish. at the end you cna barely see that the porsche got into him right before turn 1 after the race was over.
nascar is stagged in comparison with this amazing stuff. there were just two freaking caution periods in this endurance race and a finish like this took place.
Now that was a race. But the only problem is that you can't do anything. You block or bump or touch someone or its concidered "agressive driving" Oh please!!!!!!!! Watch a Martinsville race, that has "agressive driving" In NASCAR you can bump and block someone and not get penalized.
haha for me its just not the same. a race to me is all about the cars that came stock and seeing them race modded. the smell at the raceway is like none other, and the action is uncomparable to sitting on the couch at home.
if u live nearby then just come this year... i know ill be there again :D
Will you guys stop with the pointless "Nascar sucks" or "Nascar is a joke" comments. What the hell does that have to do with this finish? As for the video, I saw this and I was stoked for my team winning(as they are based in Texas where I myself reside).
I don`t know why any one would even mention Nascar. Nascar is a different league. A much lower league that uses 1950`s technology. There is nothing in a Nascar "car" that will trickle into future consumer vehicles. Porsche and Ferrari makes street legal cars today with the racing development of yesterday, Nascar is a joke.
about the previous comments, I've got the same opinion as hammet411 , nascar sucks a lot , BTW I hope it will be even more exciting in le mans in about one week, 16-17juin , off course between porsche and ferrari, but let the porsche win now !
Now, that's some exciting racing! Yes, the Porsche made a clean pass, but in all fairness the Ferrari had led most of the way...maybe it 'deserved' to win.
ever recall when robin liddell was driving a Panoz Esperante GTLM at Road Atlanta in spring, 2005 and got hit by a porsche? there has been much more dirty racing tactics in ALMS before. as for the Fiat/Ferrari comment, a porsche would be a rebadged vw in that sense. Jaime Melo and Mika Salo have the first four races of the ALMS season with their # 62 F430 GTC. If Ferrari domination continues in FIA GT, LMS, and ALMS, Porsche should reconsider the rear engine layout.
I'm just mad because the mainstream sports media only covers nascar and not other series like alms, and champcar. Also I'm sick of hearing about this stupid ass COT.
The answer you have seen in the GT race in china. There is no battle between porsche and ferrari. Gentleman start your brain. Do you really know how much races porsche won? Ferrari is only a mythos!!! And now a mythos with less grip :)
Do you know how many races Ferrari has won? No battle between the two?? You must be joking! Read up on your history of Le Mans and Grand Prix racing going back to the 50s, Porsche may have more Le Mans victories but Ferrari has an incredible history as well, and they have become a force in GT racing once again over the last few years thanks to the success of the 550, 360, and now 430 GT racers.
Don`t be sad man, ferrari has won a lot of races, sure. But porsche in Motorsport is really outstanding and everbody knows this. I don`t like the battle discussion between porsche and ferrari. In Motorsport in fact porsche is the No.1 and as No.1 u have to fight against all the others, not only against fiat (sorry, ferrari)
The 360 wasn't worth a damn in the ALMS. The 550 did well, but they didn't "own" the Corvettes. The 430GT is by far the best offering in recent years since the 333
Ferrari and Porsche is one of the most famous rivalries in all sports, not just racing. They were the most successful makes in the World Sportscar Championship, even though Ferrari withdrew in 1973 to concentrate on F1
Dear 1bangkok in Cina Porsche GT3 was excluded from the results (was lower then legal ride height)and Ferrari won. F430 won also in Silverstone and Bucarest. In FIA Championship 2006 F430 won 9 times on 10 races and won also American lemans series. GT3 997 is not able to match a Ferrari F430. This is a fact.
Why pass if you're gonna get hit anyway? How much do u know of racing? The rules don't account for drivers with worn tires.LOL If Melo needed new tires, then pit?, but he couldn't of because he triple stinted so Ferrari could stay out of pits and in the lead. What's this crap about him having no where to go on the line? He could've slowed to avoid hitting the car on the inside line right? The results are unchanged to build-up this Por vs Fer battle. The rest of the season will clear your senses.
If it was avoidable, and not simply the case of two drivers competing for the same area of race track (which is like 99% of all incidents) or not of Jorg attempting to shut the door on Jaime... then where is the penalty from IMSA? I like Jorg, he's fast, but he didn't get "wronged."
What do I know about racing? I've grown up around and involved in it my entire life (so not much according to you I guess).
What's wrong with you seraphym? READ THE IMSA CODE listed below this post. The contact at 2:07 was AVOIDABLE CONTACT. Why do you think driver's always try to pass on the inside? So they can establish position. What's the point of passing on the inside (THE STANDARD) if you're just gonna get hit (pitted) and slowed for the exit?
Any driver who, in the sole opinion of the Race Director and/or Stewards, initiates avoidable contact with another competitor, whether or not such contact interrupts the other competitors' lap times, track position or damages other competitors' cars, and
whether or not such actions result in actual contact, may be warned or penalized pursuant to Article 8 of the IMSA Code...
"in the sole opinion of the Race Director and/or Stewards" ... Thank you. Couldn't have said it better than the GCR myself. So, by that definition, the RACE DIRECTOR or STEWARDS decide what is "avoidable contact" and what is a legal "racing incident" - i.e. NOBODY on this FORUM. THEY didn't call it a foul, so it is NOT. Done. End of discussion.
That was my point all along, using the reasoning I gave for it. THEY have their own reasons, but I don't know if they're the same as mine or not.
One could easily venture to say that the director or stewards were full of crap. Running Joerg into the wall on the back straight was not a "racing incident"
You Ferrari advocates are morons. Porsche OWNS GT2 in ALMS, winning as much as 21 races in a row!!! Last year's show was an outgoing Porsche 996RSR now it's 997. Yes racing is rubbing fenders (I've done it). Door to door is allowed but, Melo hit Bergmeister TWICE from BEHIND, pushing him into the wall. If YOU know anything about racing, you will know that it's a penalty. If you want to rant about Ferrari's win go ahead. It's obvious that Porsche will dominate the rest of the season.
I believe you are referring to contacts at 2:07 and 2:10. At 2:07, the Ferrari's LF fender hits the Porsche's RR fender - that's wheel-to-wheel in a turn, and legal. Jorg tried to cut of Melo's line, and Melo stayed on it (Melo cornered from a better turn-in spot, but had worn-out tires). The contact at 2:10 is completely DOOR-TO-DOOR...fully legal, too. You say it was illegal, but IMSA has NOT overturned the results, declaring otherwise. It's simply a classic GT last-turn battle.
Are you watching the same video I am? Yes, they bumped at 2:07, but the really bad part was right after that. Jorg was tracking out to the outside of the turn, holding his line without impeding on Melo's. Melo then pushed him out toward the wall. It wasn't Jorg trying to turn in at all. I wish I had the in car footage to show you...you could see it all.
Look at 3:13 where Jorg had the line. Melo turned into him the first time.
Yes, IMSA ruled otherwise, but the rules are pretty clear.
I'm referring to the first contact, at 2:07 - Jorg clearly comes in. There's nothing wrong with that move, totally fine, but with Melo still fighting that led to contact. When they track out at 2:10 and hit door-to-door...remember, Melo was on double-stint tires, which didn't have much grip left, so I see Melo simply running out of track, with Jorg's Porsche in the way. Holding his line AFTER the contact, forcing Jorg to pull in behind, is the really aggressive part. Still legal, though.
Dang 500 char limit. At 3:13, I see them touch, also, but there's nothing wrong with that contact, either. Melo was to the outside, and Jorg came out on him. Where Melo turned in immediately after that contact shows you the line through 17. I see Jorg trying to push Melo wide on the entry to 17, and Melo ducking back underneath. If Melo HAS to turn in or be in the marbles, he did the right thing...he MAKES room for himself, classic GT driving. That's why sportscars are my favs, even over F1.
By your logic, Jorg should have tapped Melo a few times in going into 16. There was absolutely no need for Melo to hit Jorg at 2:07 going into 17. Jorg had the line and the lead. I will post the exact rules in my next comment.
"By your logic, Jorg should have tapped Melo a few times" ... No, THAT would be illegal if it was intentional. From what I see in this video, Jaime was faster out of the turn, and Jorg was there, still holding on to the outside of the turn, pushed wide by the contact at 2:07. When they hit at 2:10, JAIME is on the racing line, and JORG is wide. The track wall then narrows there on the left by just over a car width, so Jorg had no place to go without ducking back in. That's racing.
Ahh good point... just checked the video again, it's Melo who fought for the win. My bad - the rest of my statements still stand, though.
I was standing next to the winning Audi R-10 on pit lane snapping pictures at the time, so I didn't see the battle first-hand, and I didn't see who got out of the Ferrari when it pulled up behind me; there were many people in a very small space! Anyway, Melo, Salo, both are world class drivers (and Jorg in the Porsche too, for that matter).
12 Hours of racing and the two GT2 winners are less than 1/4 of a second apart after a last-turn pass; and unlike NASCAR, the rules aren't designed to bunch up the field.
PLEASE DON'T READ THIS. You will get kissed on the nearest possible Friday by the love of your life. Tomorrow will be the best day of your life. However, if you don't post this comment to at least 3 videos, you will die within 2 days. Copy and paste this, to be saved
I'll agree with that, the bumnping there was crap. That was done on purpose, dirty driving, there should have been a penalty. But what are you gonna do? That's a Ferrari being driven and F seems to carry weight in every class they run in, like a get out of jail free card.
Take your Ferrari Derangement Syndrome elsewhere... not one driver on the grid would have done any differently than Salo. He gets paid to WIN, within the rules. That IMSA did not overturn the results shows that this move was completely within the realm of door-to-door racing. Mika forced Jorg to take a shallow entry line into 17, and came back underneath...classic move. He just needed Jorg's car to help him finish the turn! Very common in GT. Very nice driving by both, in any case!
What a great lap and an even better last pass. Both drivers were driving aggresively it was Jorge race to lose and he lost it, but not running a tighter line through the last turn. You people complaining of the bumping are either not familiar with racing or are HPDE weenies who aren't familiar with any aspect of racecraft. Ask any driver in the paddock if they would have done the same, and I guarantee you they will say "heck yes".
I would so much rather see Ferrari win, but that was dirty at the end. Porsche deserved it for working so hard that whole last lap.

siamake92 4 years ago
The Ferrari deserved to go into the wall ;). If Bergmeister would have driven like Melo, Melo would have been in the wall much earlier in the lap. But a lot of the times it's the driver that is the most brutal that will win. Sadly gentleman drivers don't always win.

nascar is stagged in comparison with this amazing stuff. there were just two freaking caution periods in this endurance race and a finish like this took place.
LolaJudd 4 years ago
Now that was a race. But the only problem is that you can't do anything. You block or bump or touch someone or its concidered "agressive driving" Oh please!!!!!!!! Watch a Martinsville race, that has "agressive driving" In NASCAR you can bump and block someone and not get penalized.
combatking08 4 years ago
Yeah right! Unlike in Le Mans races, in NASCAR you only have rednecks. YEE HAW!!!

Anyway, that was a great finish. I think the Ferrari went overboard.

I was home watching it on TV. So instead of just a couple of hundred of raceway, I could see the whole race at once. :)
operationcwal789789 4 years ago
haha for me its just not the same. a race to me is all about the cars that came stock and seeing them race modded. the smell at the raceway is like none other, and the action is uncomparable to sitting on the couch at home.
if u live nearby then just come this year... i know ill be there again :D

Will you guys stop with the pointless "Nascar sucks" or "Nascar is a joke" comments. What the hell does that have to do with this finish? As for the video, I saw this and I was stoked for my team winning(as they are based in Texas where I myself reside).

Thank you for being the voice of reason. I think there is more bashing going on in the comment section than in the video.
mustang6172 4 years ago
I don`t know why any one would even mention Nascar. Nascar is a different league. A much lower league that uses 1950`s technology. There is nothing in a Nascar "car" that will trickle into future consumer vehicles. Porsche and Ferrari makes street legal cars today with the racing development of yesterday, Nascar is a joke.

ever recall when robin liddell was driving a Panoz Esperante GTLM at Road Atlanta in spring, 2005 and got hit by a porsche? there has been much more dirty racing tactics in ALMS before. as for the Fiat/Ferrari comment, a porsche would be a rebadged vw in that sense. Jaime Melo and Mika Salo have the first four races of the ALMS season with their # 62 F430 GTC. If Ferrari domination continues in FIA GT, LMS, and ALMS, Porsche should reconsider the rear engine layout.

The answer you have seen in the GT race in china. There is no battle between porsche and ferrari. Gentleman start your brain. Do you really know how much races porsche won? Ferrari is only a mythos!!! And now a mythos with less grip :)
1bangkok2 4 years ago
Do you know how many races Ferrari has won? No battle between the two?? You must be joking! Read up on your history of Le Mans and Grand Prix racing going back to the 50s, Porsche may have more Le Mans victories but Ferrari has an incredible history as well, and they have become a force in GT racing once again over the last few years thanks to the success of the 550, 360, and now 430 GT racers.
F333SP 4 years ago
Don`t be sad man, ferrari has won a lot of races, sure. But porsche in Motorsport is really outstanding and everbody knows this. I don`t like the battle discussion between porsche and ferrari. In Motorsport in fact porsche is the No.1 and as No.1 u have to fight against all the others, not only against fiat (sorry, ferrari)
1bangkok2 4 years ago
The 360 wasn't worth a damn in the ALMS. The 550 did well, but they didn't "own" the Corvettes. The 430GT is by far the best offering in recent years since the 333
moridin2004 4 years ago
Ferrari and Porsche is one of the most famous rivalries in all sports, not just racing. They were the most successful makes in the World Sportscar Championship, even though Ferrari withdrew in 1973 to concentrate on F1
sbursi 4 years ago
Dear 1bangkok in Cina Porsche GT3 was excluded from the results (was lower then legal ride height)and Ferrari won. F430 won also in Silverstone and Bucarest. In FIA Championship 2006 F430 won 9 times on 10 races and won also American lemans series. GT3 997 is not able to match a Ferrari F430. This is a fact.

Originoo187 4 years ago
Why pass if you're gonna get hit anyway? How much do u know of racing? The rules don't account for drivers with worn tires.LOL If Melo needed new tires, then pit?, but he couldn't of because he triple stinted so Ferrari could stay out of pits and in the lead. What's this crap about him having no where to go on the line? He could've slowed to avoid hitting the car on the inside line right? The results are unchanged to build-up this Por vs Fer battle. The rest of the season will clear your senses.
wilchaka 4 years ago
Yeah, IMSA is playing favorites. You've got it.
[/sarc]
If it was avoidable, and not simply the case of two drivers competing for the same area of race track (which is like 99% of all incidents) or not of Jorg attempting to shut the door on Jaime... then where is the penalty from IMSA? I like Jorg, he's fast, but he didn't get "wronged."
What do I know about racing? I've grown up around and involved in it my entire life (so not much according to you I guess).
TheSeraphym 4 years ago
What's wrong with you seraphym? READ THE IMSA CODE listed below this post. The contact at 2:07 was AVOIDABLE CONTACT. Why do you think driver's always try to pass on the inside? So they can establish position. What's the point of passing on the inside (THE STANDARD) if you're just gonna get hit (pitted) and slowed for the exit?
wilchaka 4 years ago
Any driver who, in the sole opinion of the Race Director and/or Stewards, initiates avoidable contact with another competitor, whether or not such contact interrupts the other competitors' lap times, track position or damages other competitors' cars, and
whether or not such actions result in actual contact, may be warned or penalized pursuant to Article 8 of the IMSA Code...
moridin2004 4 years ago
"in the sole opinion of the Race Director and/or Stewards" ... Thank you. Couldn't have said it better than the GCR myself. So, by that definition, the RACE DIRECTOR or STEWARDS decide what is "avoidable contact" and what is a legal "racing incident" - i.e. NOBODY on this FORUM. THEY didn't call it a foul, so it is NOT. Done. End of discussion.
That was my point all along, using the reasoning I gave for it. THEY have their own reasons, but I don't know if they're the same as mine or not.
TheSeraphym 4 years ago
One could easily venture to say that the director or stewards were full of crap. Running Joerg into the wall on the back straight was not a "racing incident"
moridin2004 4 years ago
You Ferrari advocates are morons. Porsche OWNS GT2 in ALMS, winning as much as 21 races in a row!!! Last year's show was an outgoing Porsche 996RSR now it's 997. Yes racing is rubbing fenders (I've done it). Door to door is allowed but, Melo hit Bergmeister TWICE from BEHIND, pushing him into the wall. If YOU know anything about racing, you will know that it's a penalty. If you want to rant about Ferrari's win go ahead. It's obvious that Porsche will dominate the rest of the season.
wilchaka 4 years ago 3
TheSeraphym 4 years ago
Are you watching the same video I am? Yes, they bumped at 2:07, but the really bad part was right after that. Jorg was tracking out to the outside of the turn, holding his line without impeding on Melo's. Melo then pushed him out toward the wall. It wasn't Jorg trying to turn in at all. I wish I had the in car footage to show you...you could see it all.
Look at 3:13 where Jorg had the line. Melo turned into him the first time.
Yes, IMSA ruled otherwise, but the rules are pretty clear.
moridin2004 4 years ago
I'm referring to the first contact, at 2:07 - Jorg clearly comes in. There's nothing wrong with that move, totally fine, but with Melo still fighting that led to contact. When they track out at 2:10 and hit door-to-door...remember, Melo was on double-stint tires, which didn't have much grip left, so I see Melo simply running out of track, with Jorg's Porsche in the way. Holding his line AFTER the contact, forcing Jorg to pull in behind, is the really aggressive part. Still legal, though.
TheSeraphym 4 years ago
Dang 500 char limit. At 3:13, I see them touch, also, but there's nothing wrong with that contact, either. Melo was to the outside, and Jorg came out on him. Where Melo turned in immediately after that contact shows you the line through 17. I see Jorg trying to push Melo wide on the entry to 17, and Melo ducking back underneath. If Melo HAS to turn in or be in the marbles, he did the right thing...he MAKES room for himself, classic GT driving. That's why sportscars are my favs, even over F1.
TheSeraphym 4 years ago
By your logic, Jorg should have tapped Melo a few times in going into 16. There was absolutely no need for Melo to hit Jorg at 2:07 going into 17. Jorg had the line and the lead. I will post the exact rules in my next comment.
moridin2004 4 years ago
"By your logic, Jorg should have tapped Melo a few times" ... No, THAT would be illegal if it was intentional. From what I see in this video, Jaime was faster out of the turn, and Jorg was there, still holding on to the outside of the turn, pushed wide by the contact at 2:07. When they hit at 2:10, JAIME is on the racing line, and JORG is wide. The track wall then narrows there on the left by just over a car width, so Jorg had no place to go without ducking back in. That's racing.

Can i point out, It wasnt Mika Salo driving, it was infact Jamie Melo!
Roadrunnerf430 4 years ago
Ahh good point... just checked the video again, it's Melo who fought for the win. My bad - the rest of my statements still stand, though.
I was standing next to the winning Audi R-10 on pit lane snapping pictures at the time, so I didn't see the battle first-hand, and I didn't see who got out of the Ferrari when it pulled up behind me; there were many people in a very small space! Anyway, Melo, Salo, both are world class drivers (and Jorg in the Porsche too, for that matter).
TheSeraphym 4 years ago
12 Hours of racing and the two GT2 winners are less than 1/4 of a second apart after a last-turn pass; and unlike NASCAR, the rules aren't designed to bunch up the field.
What a race!
sbursi 4 years ago
and NASCAR doesnt have 12 hours to race. Which is pretty exciting watching a 12 hour race and see it that close at the end.

julien1722 4 years ago
I'll agree with that, the bumnping there was crap. That was done on purpose, dirty driving, there should have been a penalty. But what are you gonna do? That's a Ferrari being driven and F seems to carry weight in every class they run in, like a get out of jail free card.
SpecialKLSX 4 years ago
Take your Ferrari Derangement Syndrome elsewhere... not one driver on the grid would have done any differently than Salo. He gets paid to WIN, within the rules. That IMSA did not overturn the results shows that this move was completely within the realm of door-to-door racing. Mika forced Jorg to take a shallow entry line into 17, and came back underneath...classic move. He just needed Jorg's car to help him finish the turn! Very common in GT. Very nice driving by both, in any case!
TheSeraphym 4 years ago
TheSeraphym, I agree with your comments, Jorg could have easily pinched off that corner, and forced Mika to turn tighter too.
quattrojoe 4 years ago
What a great lap and an even better last pass. Both drivers were driving aggresively it was Jorge race to lose and he lost it, but not running a tighter line through the last turn. You people complaining of the bumping are either not familiar with racing or are HPDE weenies who aren't familiar with any aspect of racecraft. Ask any driver in the paddock if they would have done the same, and I guarantee you they will say "heck yes".

I don't see what was good about that pass. Melo just hit the Porsche and messed up his exit. It doesn't take skill to do something like that.
