@DarthYryn sorry to disagree but I don't share your opinion of Clarkson. His style of presenting TV programmes appears supercilious, and some years ago I observed "first hand" that he can be unnecessarily unpleasant, it seems when there are no consequences.
Maybe. I'm not saying that he is a perfect man. But he says things that make sense, and more importantly that are in great need to be said. And I don't especially refer to just that documentary .We need people like that.
Many people very pleasants don't do shit or are assh*les so...I'll choose Clarkson anyway
@DarthYryn Thanks for the response. What you wrote "we need people like that" I have come across before and the expression brings a smile to my face - I am content :-)
There was no plan to bring the Tirpitz to the Atlantic since the loss of the Bismark. Even Gneisenau and Scharnhorst returned to Germany a month before, because they weren't effectively to use.
in modern, professional armies. However, I have no doubt the frontline forces of most militaries today would follow their orders and carry out a mission like this. The main point is that politicians and generals would prefer 6000 soldiers die over ten years than risk the deaths of 600 in one night in an action that could be militarily decisive
and not to allow their justifiable fear before and during the battle affect them or their men. The courage and determination of these men, mainly peacetime civilians, is far more profound than the macho tough-guy persona that seems so prevalent today
It is hard not to be emotionally moved by that young sgt's last letter, and to hear of them talking about how they were determined not to show fear in front of their men. They knew the odds, they knew it would be a savage fight when they landed, they knew they would probably be terrified. But they were determined to do their utmost, whatever the personal cost
I've gone all patriotic - wish people could be like this now! We defended honourably our freedoms. I have visited the Normandy beaches and seen the sacrifice made my GB, USA and Canadian troops - I cried my eyes out - bizarrely I was born on the 5th June the day the D-day landings were cancelled - but my granadad was born on the 6th of June - maybe that's why this part of history interests me.
To be fair, it would be pretty much impossible for anyone to refuse to go along with this. Being looked at as a coward for the rest of your life is worse then death.
With all due respect. They do still make British soldiers like this today. I remember them and all our fallen everytime I see a coffin draped in a Union flag arriving back to this green and pleasent land from Helmand province and other places our brave men and women go to defend freedom. Thank you for posting this series.
Kids of today should be made watch this to learn what courage and toughness is all about. It's not the gangs and the rudeness that makes you hard. It's knowing that you're going to meet your death and still board the bloody ship. Tell you lot one thing, they don't make them like this no more...
Listening and reading that letter that the young lad had written to his Dad made me cry. I cannot believe how lucky we, as a generation, have had it but unfortunately many of us do not show our appreciation for what those boys did for us. They gave their all, their past and their future so that we can live as happily as we do. RIP.

Yeah, when he said the officer said that anyone could walk away and non of them did...i know i would have walked away, so i just can't beleive how brave they were!
@MALOSINZ - True, it is very hard to listen to that. We seem like we are a weaker, more sarcastic, less honourable generation more interested in the e-channel and reality TV. Honour. Love. Sacrifice. Duty. Where the heck have they gone?! :(
clarkson also done another one of his emotion triggering documentrys on the victoria cross, if you enjoyed this, the victor cross documentry is a must

Broke my heart when they enonciate a letter of one of those young lads..when he talk about future generations...such a waist.
We owe those people (and not only them, but all the other who fight ) so much. And we've done nothing but shit with what they gave us.

"...I can only hope that by laying down my life the generations to come might in some way remember us..."
They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow,
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Not just Marines; at this stage of the war, most Commandos were from the Army. It was only after WW2 that the Commando role went to the Marines.
That is changing now that the Rifles are now being incorporated into Three Commando Brigade. That's a good thing.
