Ramses is happy like a puppy! This video was helpful. After 3 weeks, my kitty's diabetes is now in remission, thanks to changing from dry food to a grain-free canned food. I'm glad i bought a glucose test meter, because the combination of low carbs + insulin injections made him hypoglycemic.
This is my second diabetic cat and I've found that the area you give the shot in gets sensitive after time. It means the cat disappears at shot time, or Tab does anyway. It obviously hurts. I've been giving the shots in the loose skin around the neck. This video shows me another spot I can go to so the shot doesn't hurt and he can be a happier cat. Ramses' lack of hair showed where loose skin was right away. Thanks!
I am curious if you have checked out Dr. Elizabeth Hodgkins' tight regulation protocol. Rather than blind dosing, you test and adjust the dose accordingly. By keeping blood glucose levels in the normal range with diet and insulin, many cats go into remission. I would have never believed it but after 5 weeks, my 12 year old cat no longer required insulin.
Am due to give my cat his first insulin shot tomorrow. Was shown how to do this by vet nurse but the calm manner of this cat is so reassuring - obviously a small but vital part of his routine. By the way, do you always inject in the same spot?
I just found out my Oriental cat, Pablo is diabetic and I was worried about injecting him, I jumped on here and this was the first video I watched about how to do it and I've got to say, you make it look so easy, it's put things in perspective and I know I can do it now. Love your Ramses, Sphinx are such cool cats!
@TheLadyCavaliere Thanks! It is really easy to give them shots, because the needle is so tiny that they never feel a thing. We will do anything for our babies, huh? lol! Don't worry, because my Ramses is still alive 'n kickin' 2 years after being diagnosed.
@zmelon Wow, thanks for the quick reply! :-) You're right, I'd walk over hot coals for my two Orientals and two tabbies, they really are my babies, it's so great to see someone else who chats away to their cat like I do! I've got to ask, with a Sphinx, I've never stroked one before, does their skin feel like human skin or is there any fur at all? I'm fascinated with them!
I know you have been treating this for a while Are you hometesting? It is the only way to know if it is safe to give insulin as well as giving you the information needed to treat this disease correctly.
I can teach you how
Are you feeding dry food? You shouldn't be Feeding prescription? No need to be as you can do so much better

thanks so much z. they really don't feel it, i just gave my kitty his first shot while he was eating and it was so easy..he was totally unphased and just kept chowing down! i feel so much better now having done it! you and your kitty are great!
oh what a sweet cat..he must be so easy to love! i will be giving my cat his first shot tomorrow morning..i'm really nervous about it, but seeing your vid puts me more at ease about doing it and not wanting to hurt him.
@zmelon I doubt he doesn't feel a thing. I've been diabetic for 7 years and the injections, especially that kind of syringe can hurt quite a bit sometimes, even after all these years with a minimum of 4 injections a day. The insulin pens hurt less, but are more expensive. However, it's true that sometimes you don't feel a thing... It all depends on the location and what nerves you hit. :) If you don't believe me, try it yourself - without the insulin of course. :)
Fortunately, diabetes in cats is very easy to manage. We had to give our late siamese two insulin injections a day as well, and they were subcutaneous just like this one. Our vet taught us simply to lift up the scruff on the back of his neck and inject there while he was eating. He was so engrossed in food that he never even noticed.
OMG!! he is sooooo cute i want him!lol! my 10year old cat Stewart was recently diagnosed aswell,i noticed he started walking on his hocks and it hasnt got better, yet, hopefully!i give him his shots twice a day and changed his diet,it's been just over 2 months now. Has Ramses' waling improved?if so after how long and how long has he had it? thx 4 the video, its nice to not feel alone in this:)poor kitties, gotta love them;)
My cat was just diagnosed with diabetes, too....I'm scared! I've never given a shot to anyone! But your enthusiasm for your little guy is so sweet. I want to pet him, too!
We just found out (today) that our old guy has diabetes and we'll be starting the shots this week... Thanks for the video. It really put my mind at ease about how easy it is!
Thank you so much for this video! My cat was diagnosed with diabetes 3 months ago. Thanks to your video I changed my technique of injection and it made such a big difference. Ramses is such a good boy and I hope that he is still doing fine.
Great video showing the proper way to give Insulin and I'm glad you show how quick and painless it is for the cat. My 13 yr. old, Gus, was just diagnosed last week, and I've started giving him two shots a day also. I've also learned how to do BG testing at home to save me quite a bit of $. Good luck and I hope my own Sugar cat stays happy and keeps lowering his BG!
You can really see a person by the way they treat an animal. I have such a huge heart for cats. I just found out tonight that my little dog has diabetis and your video really cheered me up.
Interesting, I wonder how you would tell if he was hypoglycemic. I guess he would know to eat something. I inject approximately 8 times a day. Into me tho, not a cat. :D
That is the same way I talk to my cat Baby! Poor Baby was diagnosed w diabeties today but its ok, I'm gonna take good care of him. Thank for the demonstration!
dntessier, I had the same problem, so my vet shaved a strip of fur across her back so I could see what I was doing. That helped a lot. You might want to ask your vet to do the same. It makes giving the injection much easier, especially when you are just learning how to do it.
Thank-You for sharing Ramses with everyone. You are a very special person to take such excellent care of such a beautiful special loving Ramses. My four-legged boy looks like he could be Ramses brother. I had to add Ramses to my diabetic site to show other diabetics the correct way to inject. Bless you and Ramses.
Thank you. I'm injecting antibiotics to my cat tonight and I'm a little afraid she'd run while the needle is into her skin. I don't want to hurt her unnecessarily. Brrr! I'll have to try and learn.
My cat is 9 years old and was diagnosed last month with feline diabetes. I am trying to read and learn as much as I can. Thank you for this video. He is such a good cat.
