  • Wth the original so mutch better

  • This is the only person that i have heard that sounds like hendrix

  • Now this is called JAMMING JIMMY!!!

  • woah....

  • WHY IS THIS SO QUIET!!!

  • He completed this song.

  • At the risk of sounding rude here i'm gonna come out and say it , he looks so much more awesome playing the more he weighs and i'm not sure why

  • @bowlofkittehs just another aspect that made him stand out from the crowd, when i see vids of him sitting down shredding the guitar to pieces its like a fucking kung-fu movie, and hes the buddah kicking everyones ass without even trying..................unlike anything i have ever seen.............

  • ah man, how do you get that fast and precise with the picking hand...? :/

  • "When I die, I want people to play my music, go wild and freak out and do anything they want to do."-Jimi Hendrix, I don't think he expected anything like this lol.

  • I heard a lot of covers but Shawn's way of playing the main riff is the best... he has Jimi's vibrato.

  • I love you.

  • You can feel his soul. This is the best cover I've heard of any song

  • too much information , not enough sound or style, for my tastes, but amazing

speed . Jimi was about so much more than speed....

  • @sheltech12

Shawn Lane is also so much more than speed...

  • @sheltech12 Lol sadly if you lived a few hundred years ago you wouldn't have been able to tell the difference between Bach and a kid playing "mary had a little lamb". It's just "too much information" you would say, as people laugh at you. "The only difference between the little kid and Bach is Bach's speed" . Then the people would permanently disregard any opinion of yours because of the sheer level of stupidity.

  • @andrewkeen24 And Jimi Hendrix was the reason I started playing guitar so I'm not dissing him at all. It's just that it took quite a few years for me to realise how much better Shawn is than almost anyone else who's ever lived.

  • @andrewkeen24 agreed.

  • he's fat because he sat on his ass while playing guitar. that should tell you how much he practiced

  • @Ilikebench1 He WAS(he's dead) fat because he had a rare form of arthritic disease, he had to use steroids as a cure and he couldn't move much because of pain that caused him massive weight gain.

  • @Ilikebench1 Well this is a rather ignorant statement.

  • @tastytasters yeah huh. i just really realized what i said.at the moment it made sense to me

  • @Ilikebench1 lol yeah. I kinda get what you wanted to say though. It's just that the initial wording is kinda off :P

  • nsfw

  • The film couldn't handel it any more

  • As I've previously stated...Lane was an ALIEN life force. No other explanation is acceptable or viable.

  • HYPERSPEED Guthrie Govan= Shawn Lane

  • @jcbnalle I think a lot more seperates them than speed

  • @Kingding6 Yeah I know. I was being rather obnoxious at that moment.

  • @jcbnalle fair play then aha

  • THE GUITAR GENIUS THE BEST COVER HENDRIX!

  • Awesome vid... reminds me of some of the looser and more experimental stuff he did with Jonas Hellborg -- totally uninhibited balls-out shredding!!! I'm reasonably sure we will never see another player of Shawn's caliber again in our lifetimes! R.I.P. Shawn... you are still in our hearts and minds...

  • Jonas Hellborg

  • my mind couldn't even comprehend what happened from 1:23 to 1:32

  • Look at his face at about 0:48. Joy at creation, joy at the moment, no cares but for the notes at that time.

  • this caused my computer to crash!

  • Shawn, how did all of your guitars and picks not burst into flame?

  • Shawn Lane, one of the worlds best guitar players.

  • @lighwave You mean the worlds best?

  • HELLA BAD

  • I think when Shawn Lane started getting fat he just said to himself well if I'm going to be a fatass i might as well be the greatest guitarist of all time. and thats what he did

  • intro was fuckin badass

  • This fucker is SICK!.....Do a good deed today; Introduce someone new to SHAWN LANE

  • I like he would mimic the refrain, 'scuse me, while I kiss the sky' with his guitar since there was no vocalist. anyone know what scale he is playing at 1:24 to 1:30 ?

  • @ChiZ712 all of them

  • man, that boy could tear the strings off a guitar! WoW! another great buried by the media and lost to us forever. Britney's face is everywhere and this guy's an unkown! this is a dream right? no way is the real world THIS screwed Up!

  • Thank you stevo0914 for uploading this!!! Is there anyone better than Shawn? No? That's what I thought too... ROCK ON SHAWN!!! WE ALL MISS YOU!!! R.I.P. - Shawn Lane, March 21, 1963 – September 26, 2003 There WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER!!!

  • Seriously this is one of the best covers of Purple Haze! ...much better than Malmsteen's one [which sucked literally]... Shawn Lane rocks! RIP!

  • @Anik04 how did malmsteen's cover suck? i thought it was good.

  • @razorman916 I don't know your taste man, but for me, zillion notes don't count if one note can touch your soul! ...Malmsteen was shredding like crazy! and it wasn't soothing to my hear! ..so yah! :)

  • @Anik04

    one note my ass...

that's what all the guys who can't play say.

  • @FRIDAY13TAURUS right..so Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, Jimmy Page and many other guys they can't play guitar?...only shredders can? whatever makes you happy man!

  • @Anik04 those guys have never played just one note...

  • @FRIDAY13TAURUS and you took one note literally? ...seriously, don't meddle in the conversation unless you understand what the previous comments were about!

  • @Anik04

Take your own advice whatever your name is...

there's more to music than anything you could ever show us...

  • @Anik04 there's infinite ways to express and say and feel in any way in music...take the one note bullshit and bury that already; that's not a new sentiment. You'll never hear pianists or any other musician talk about one note only dumbass over the hill american males with erectile dysfunction with a close minded blues background say that. There's not a notable guitarist that I haven't heard and I like them all and have heard them express plenty...you could too I imagine.

  • @FRIDAY13TAURUS First of all, I'm not American, and definitely not from blues background..I've been playing guitar for 15yrs, and I don't know how old you are. I've two bands, their genres are Rock and Metal. And I'm fond of old school rock than new age shredding! I can play millions of notes, but that doesn't necessarily makes my music best!..One correct note is good enough against that! ..I've my freedom to post comments on youtube, you should step aside, post your comments but don't reply me!

  • @Anik04 Well I am an American, but not a 'stupid American'...

"one note" theory is a classic testament to ignorance and obsolescence...

  • @FRIDAY13TAURUS like I said, whatever makes you happy man!

  • @Anik04 Like I said, take your own advice...

  • 3:47 and on the camera experience some failure due to gratuitous amounts of epic

  • this shouldnt happen.

  • When's another dude like him gonna come around...

  • @zmanofwar3 not for a long, long time friend

  • he looks like a gimli in prison clothes but he still rocks hard as fuck

  • Shawn lane at 2:46 was too cute just like a kid pulling up his pants RIP

  • He just gets lost in the guitar...

    amazing

  • Two guys who left way too early.

  • hahaha 2:46 he's like ROCK *pulls pants up ROCK AGAIN

  • wow shawn kicks fuckin arse!!!!

  • Hands down, the most expressive use of emotion and speed all while playing through the chord changes. His phrasing and choice of notes is with no doubt beyond stellar,...straight from the inside and covering all the bases,..the way a cover was meant to be played.

  • Shawn made guitar his BITCH!

  • Comment removed

  • Above and beyond.

  • Fly Shawn flyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!

  • he raped this song... Shawn Lane was one of the best guitarist in the world... too bad he left us. RIP

  • whoa that guitar just recieved a world-class ass beating!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This guy must masturbate alot...

  • the 12 dislikes must be justin bieber fans!

  • I hear alot of bashing of shred wanking blah blah blah. If hendrix were alive he would love this performance. Hendrix was always playin over the top which is what made him so great pushing the boundaries ETC. If hendrix could have played like shawn back in the day HE WOULD HAVE!!!!!!!

  • You know that's the thing.

You can find a better copy of Petrucci, Batio, Malmsteen and any other shredder here on youtube, but I've never seen a copy of Shawn Lane in here.

He must have had the best copy protection ever = endless awesomeness.

  • @RediForKing I don't think you can find better copies of those players on youtube. You have to come up with your own style, otherwise you're just a piece of crap.

  • @RediForKing Rusty Cooley is a bit of a shawn Lane copy

  • @razorman916 You can't compare a mindless shredder like Cooley to Lane.

  • Lane probly had more talent and speed in his left hand when he was 12 than Batio, Petrucci and Malsteem have now combined.

  • nice. too bad the audio is crap-low. I would have like to really hear it without the turn-up hiss....

  • This is absoluy horrendous speedwank over a hendrix classic for most of the song. Worse than Yngwie wanking over another hendrix songs. At least his wasn't as fast and had some discernible licks. This sounded like superman with ten extra jet engines attached to himself.

IMO Shawn Lane is a great guitar player (when he doesn't do this so untastefully like this), and I love my shred, but this just doesn't sound good to my ears.

  • "They do what they do" what a fucking demeaning comment. Ever heard of composition? I love Shawn's playing and his music but it's a different genre.

Some days I'll put on "Passion and Warfare" by Vai and it will be the only music that will motivate me.

Vai and Satriani are guitar gods, stop being a technique prude. If Shawn was alive to hear such comments I am sure he'd roast you too.

  • Is there a software to count how many notes he played?? :)

  • it seems that many people think that when a guy play fast, there's no emotion out of it. They are missing the point. They just haven't listen any songs from Shawn lane. He has an amzingly complex and emotional musical language.

  • Shawn Lane one of the best guitarists to ever live! Along with Jimi, RIP.

  • Lane is the best guitar player ever

  • @cardhang you obviosly haven't heard of shawn... He's a fusion guitar player. He's rightly doing a tribute. O.k. he hasn't the same tecnics as Hendix (he has others just listen on you tube), but still a tribute and he's an excellent guitarist who sadly passed away prematuraly.

  • @cardhang

God forbid we deviate from sacred source material right? I mean, no such thing as variations on a theme.

Seriously, what would lead anyone to believe that an artist is somehow performing some sacrilege by adding his or her own flavor here and there. Music is ours to mold, not the other way around.

  • shut the fuck up man. people went there to see lane play not jimmy. But its a good groove to jam to. He had plenty of respect for jimmy. Its not his fault jimmy didn't know how to play his instrument. He sounds nothing like malmsteen.

  • Dude relax

If people didn't come to hear Hendrix, why Purple Haze?

Anyway, if you like him, cool. God Bless ya.

Your comment on jimi says it all.

  • @tastefulphrasing jimi not jimmy

  • AH, thanks man. You can tell im not a big fan. haha. I like a couple songs though. Just don't understand the appeal personally.

  • I think the real appeal is the fact that his sound has made such a huge impact in blues and rock in general. His creativity and uniqueness is unrivaled in a lot of modern music these days. You gotta look back at the late 60's and see how ahead of his time he was.

  • Dude, thats a good point. I'll listen to it today and be open minded. I can admit when I am wrong. Thanks man.

  • Guy,you do know that Jimi was one Shawns biggest influences no?And there is nothing here like YJM.Shawn had his own alternate picking techniques that may sound like YJM's sweeping techniques to the un trained ear,but you will almost never hear Shawn sweeping. And I dont understand why if it isnt played like Jimi's it isnt good. And his weight was a medical cond, from steroids he had to take. You Know nothing about this man.And Jimi would say you should be punched for that one way mindset you sport

  • Thanks for NOT calling me a cunt

    ( I know it's coming )

    Anyway, I've apologized already,

I play so I should know better. Shawn is great, but jimi is

becoming like, buy a music book and you'll be just like him. Not true. Hendrix was something very special.

Jimi never had to let people know he was practicing

arppegios all week. He didn't waste notes. Every note

had it's purpose. If he wanted to get crazy, he burnt his

axe not play a million notes a second.

Anyway, learn all u can about music

  • I try not to call names to validate any points I'm trying to make. And I agree that Jimi was indeed very special.

I just hate to see anyone cut anything down when someone is approaching material their own way.Rather I like it or not, guys at this level have my respect,as well as anyone else who does things their own way.Having an open mind is a must have to be a well rounded player today,IMHO,

Anyway, would never call you a name bro,how could we have a discussion if I did, lol.peace

  • gr8 fuckin cover... nuff said.. btw betcha cant play that

  • 1:30 nice touch

  • satch is not really very good compared to shawn as far as technical ability and overall musical knowledge....i think satch stopped improving a while ago.....i dont think shawn ever stopped. satch is playin with chicken foot and wants to suit people...hes is a washed up has been that made a name by taking a large piece of credit for one a genre of music he was really only a small piece of

  • name two guitar instrumentalists who have accomplished more or sold more units than steve vai, or joe satriani, you can't, so he obviously gets the credit for being at the top of the food chain in a genre he helped popularize, arguably there are better artists out there, and we could debate this but our answers would just be opinions based on personal preference. but what we do know is that no one has surpassed their (vai/satch) accomplishments, or given back as much to upcoming artists

  • what are you trying to say?

  • @Kingding6 the guy above me said joe satriani was washed up, and given to much credit in the instrumental genre, my point is you don't have to like a player or his music, but respect thier ability and what they brought to the table. case in point, i am not a huge malmsteen fan, but i know enough about music to refrain from saying things like he sucks. look i love shawn lane but i am not going to crap on satch and vai to make a point. it's not necessary

  • @gillenh2o yea I see what your saying, they certainly do not suck. They are not in the top echelon with Lane and Govan either, but they do what they do, which is cool

  • @Kingding6 well shane and govan are two totally different styles of instrumental music from vai and satch, vai is top of the foodchain for his style of music, lane is top of the heap for his, but the two are as different as comparing jazz to rock, or hip hop to r&b, thier two different animals that have similarities (they are both instrumental guitarists), but yet are worlds apart, but for the most part we agree

  • @Kingding6 I have a friend who has absolutely no musical experience and has never played an instrument in his life (comes from russia). He has always known about joe satriani and steve vai etc . and had all of their cd's. He is a qualified chemist so he is rather smart. It basically just took intelligence for him to realise that joe satriani is rather crap ( not that bad but his music is too simple ). He listened to shawn lane's music once and realised that the man is a beast and now he is a fan

  • Comment removed

  • @andrewkeen24 His music may be simple, but Joe is in fact a melodic genius. Shawn Lane's melodies are great when it comes to emotion (Epilogue for Lisa), but lack the catchiness that Joe's melodies have, which many people enjoy more than emotion or technicality. It all comes down to personal preference. Personally, I enjoy both at different times and so I listen to both artists. Listen to 'Ten Words' or 'Littleworth Lane' if you want Satch songs that combine both emotion and hook.

  • @KoldDude I guess he's a "melodic genius" in some people's eyes. But I know advanced musicians and non-musicians alike who are completely bored with anything he has written and would not be impressed by any of his melodies at all.

  • @KoldDude I completely agree with the fact that most people would find his melodies catchy though. Not trying to bash everything you say.

  • @KoldDude Lane > Satch ^^

  • @kranen1 IYO. :)

  • Gigglebooster = winner of biggest idíot of the year adward.

  • i'm not too into the whole massive solo guitar stuff but this guy is something else, rip mate!

  • RIP amazing Shawn. What a crazy beautiful player. I'm speechless every time.

  • there should be an ignore user function

  • Shitty rendition of a great song.

  • It's an instrumental jazz-rock fusion version of it. If you're not into jazz fusion, you'd THINK it's shitty, but you just wouldn't understand it. Ask ANY exceptionally skilled and extensively knowledgeable guitar player about Shawn Lane, and they will undoubtedly speak of him as one of the very very best of the best.

  • Nope he's shitty, ruined a good song

  • What would you say objectively to justify that conclusion?

  • Okay you see what you just said there? You DISLIKED it. Opinion. So why go and say that it's shitty as in it is poor quality? And I felt the emotion in it. Maybe you didn't or just don't feel it at all in this type of music. I honestly think that Shawn Lane stands well apart from all other "shredders" in the way he plays. I've never heard fast playing like the way he does it before, and believe me, I've heard so many obscure players out there. Listen to the Powers of Ten album.

  • I couldnt agree more

  • Haha wow it's like you have absolutely no idea about the conveyed emotion in his style or throughout his entire career. Also, Buckethead himself said that Shawn Lane was "by far the greatest guitar player that ever lived." AND, like I already said, you should definitely check out the Powers of Ten album. You'll probably change your mind afterwards. About a year ago, I would have thought it was nonsense too, but I know it isn't. I heard the Hendrix version. This is the most incredible yet.

  • bucket head is a joke, and any lame duck with a 200 hundred dollar guitar and enough time on their hands can learn to shred, its pointless

  • I agree with the second thing you said, but not that BH is a joke or that shredding is pointless.

Shredding, when it is just done for the sake of shredding, IS pointless, but sometimes it is necessary to complete a certain style, feel, or expression. A lot of people overdo it or do it in a way that shows it is shredding for the sake of shredding which I think is dumb, but that's almost never Shawn Lane.

You should be careful about dissing BH before you check out his entire discography.

  • Just check out the "Shawn Lane Tribute" video. This kind of wild and crazy playing shown in this video (and it's rather uncommon among Lane performances, so your "pulling a Lane on them" idea doesn't make sense in the context you used) is something that Buckethead undoubtedly does as well, but with far less variance and complexity than Lane.

I used to think Vai had no emotion, but as I got to understanding the actual style, I noticed it in enormous doses in occasional songs of his. Same here.

  • There's no emotion in those crazy runs? Another mental midget who isn't able to see tempo as the valid avenue of expression (in music) that it is. Buckethead would be the first to disagree with your nonsense. He worshipped the ground Lane walked on, because he knew that, both compositionally as well as technically, Lane was eons upon eons ahead. Furthermore, emotion is a subjective INTERNAL experience, so good luck investing some time in develloping those extremely untrained ears!

  • you obviously have no clue who Shawn Lane is if you concider his licks to do have soul, i have never heard so much non sense.

Shawn to me is the most soulful shredder there ever was and personally there is no one that even comes close to Shawn.

    Shawn was perfection in everyway.

You shouldn't nock the best there is a reason why he was known by paul gilbert as the scariest guitarist of all time becuase he did licks no one could do and they was so emotive and phrased perfectly.

  • @trevskiw2008, first off I have never tried understanding as much nonsense as what you typed there. Shawn, "to you", may be the most soulful shredder you have heard, but I don't hear anything in his playing besides wild shredding madness. And he is not the best there is, that comment actually sickened me. There's a reason purple haze is considered a great song, and jimi is considered a great guitarist, because he didn't fill it with all of this nonsense crap that lane did.He butchered this cover

  • Seriously people don't even give this person the joy of knowing everyone thinks he's a douchebag. Look at how amazing a person Shawn Lane is...do you really think he'd care what someone like this thinks of him? Or what he thinks of anything for that matter? I know what he's saying is immature and offensive...but really at the end of the day if the person has no credibility, neither do his comments. This persons looking for attention, don't give it to him.

  • Shawn Lane is widely concidered among musicians as one of the best guitarists of all time. there is a reason why so many musicians think this way i think he is the greatest.

I'm not giving you the satisfaction of replying to your stupid comments people like you will never understand how amazing Shawn was and he inspired people so much that they miss him dearly.

I'm a massive fan and i find it unbelievable when someone can't understand how great shawn was.

  • You have driven me to reply.

It doesn't matter how many notes you can play a second shawn played super fast but it sounded emotional and soulful.

Shawn can play at any speed and blow my mind. The last word i would ever use to describe Shawn is mindless, Shawn knew every single note he was playing and chose them out of pure prefection.

I think Shawn is the most underrated guitarist of all time there not that many huge fans but like me they all are so loyal and love his music dearly.

  • Ok. To say all Lane fans doesn't like any other guitarists is just a joke. I love Lanes music but I also love SRV, Gary Moore, Hendrix, McLaughlin, Buckethead, Yngwie and dozens of other guitarists.

  • @hsoux33, k you like those other guitarists.. but you think lane is ages better than they were or than anyone else will ever be right? That's the point I'm getting at, sayig that he was technically years and years ahead of some of the greatest guitarists of all time is absurd, yet littered on any comment board for shawn lane will be comments that he was technically wayyyyyy better than someone like satriani. It's just absolutly stupid.

  • I don't compare guitarists. All guitarists have their personal sounds. One day I wanna hear some Hendrix another day some Lane or whatever. But you can compare technique, and if you say that Shawn is not more technical than Satch then I won't argue with you anymore because it is obvious that you are trolling (nothing bad about Satch he is awesome).

  • Yes both have a mastery of the instrument that most of us will never come close to. But Hendrix and Clapton also have? Does this mean that they have as good technique as Shawn or Satch? No... And who says Satch is one of the most flawless players today? He is far from even tough he may be considered a technical guitarist. He is far from Gilbert who stated that "Shawn Lane was the most terrifying guy of all time"... To me it sounds as if you aren't even playing the guitar but I might be wrong

  • @Gigglebooster lane is far better than satriani even satriani knows that.

  • That is redicilous i concider myself an unbelievably huge fan of Shawn's and i love other guitarists so much as macalpine, metheny, Holdsworth, gambale, hendrix, Yngwie, Timmons and i love other instruments such a saxophone piano, the list goes on forever your comments are stupid and you sounds like a Hateful person youtube is to comment and be positive with some opinions but it is no place for false facts of someone who clearly was a genius and is dearly missed.

    Please stop.

  • Gigglebooster* your comments tells a lot about your self. you are an idiot . you have obiously never heard any studio version of shawns songs, or ANY of his songs. you obiously don't know what diminished is either.. i respect that you have an opinion but keep it to yourself instead of spreading it all around youtube . you are making a fool out of yourself because you don't know anything! still i must agree with you on this one there's a little too much shredding in here

  • no you don't know what diminished is he have only used it in 3 of his songs? and in live solos. you are a ridiculous troll who keeps comming back why don't you waste your life on something else? and i never bashed you.. and all i'm saying is that i thing there is too much shredding in this one? lane is my favorite guitarist and musician but i still have a free opinion. i respect that you have an opinion but you now nothing about guitar or music..

  • yup tree of his own songs and it were used probertly. and yeah he is known for his legato but its rarely diminished in his own music. when have i bashed hendrix?

  • id like to see u do better... please... oh right i forgot... nobody can on this whole planet... and btw the legatto made his stuff sound smoother... makin it better, and why don't u learn to appreciate things in this world

  • David Gilmour is overrated, Shawn is a cult figure, he's underground, how can he be overrated you idiot!

    AHH BLOODY TROLLS!

  • dude not alot of people really know about lane or like the music he plays. if he was metal im sure hed be alot more famous simply because alot more people like metal than jazz fusion rock blus and other music in that general area.

  • i cant disagree with you, but i'de say around 3:42 is where he goes a little too far with the fusion shred

  • I think the best part was 0:00-4:50

  • Comment removed

  • it looks like shawn had a lot of fun with this song

usually his stage presence is so
