  • Lol I play tenor so of course Frank Elmo :D

  • Frank Elmo the Hierophant.

  • @zwazi09 You are most kind!

  • Or Chris Hunter...

  • I'm an alto player so naturally my favorite was Chris Huner. :)

  • lmao made me jump when it played lol...... still hot song :D!

  • Chris Hunter...the best of this band

  • I don't know about sounding like Coltrane in this vid, it's pretty hard to imitate the sheets of sound style he patented. That being said, I enjoy these solos a hell of a lot. Now the alto player....I think his solo was cool, even if it was a little too Coltrane-esque.

  • wow this sax player was amazing definitely sounds in the same bebop style

  • Envy is a bitch... How can a great, fun version of Giant Steps, with tight and smokin ensemble playing and amazing solos get 'dislikes' and disrespectful comments?

Human beings are weirdly funny animals...

  • i h8 that everyone who plays this tune tries to improvise like coltrane... where is the originality?

  • @greati9 Originality? Wtf are you talking about? This man did just a good a solo as any and your going to criticize him after an amazing solo?

  • @JazzTrumpetBlues I wasnt talking about the dudes in the vid. They did pretty good. But still, they didnt develop their phrases enough. What i mean is their are are alot of runs, but no motiv development, melodic development, repetion or imitaion (which ever term, they are all the same.) The sax at the start did it. check it this is what i want more of: 1:16-1:22

  • @greati9 No motif development? Have you ever tried to play Giant Steps? I have to admit that when I first heard the 'Big Band' of this arrangement I was put off, I grew up with the 4 - 6 member jazz groups, but once I got past that & listened to the solos I wasn't so negative. But to return to my motif and develop it a tiny bit: GIANT STEPS is seriously difficult! I mean, if one is trying to improvise across 3 key changes & n+ cord changes all at Mach 1, good luck!

  • @Cohnmiester the song isnt that hard. its only 12 bars. Anyone who practices enough can play medically over it. Your stopping urself by saying u can't do it. U can probably do a better job than some of these guys! I play over giant steps for fun, cuz i just like the sound. Pro hint: the 2-5-1's from the keys of Eb to G to B are good points to develop melodically. look at the melody.

  • @danieljones013 please count the bars again, there are 16!

  • Frank Elmo is my music teacher...

  • 12 People can't improvise over Giant Steps

  • k, so the tenor player... looks like he's using a Francois Luis ligature.... any idea what mouthpiece he's using?

  • OMFG!!!!!!!!! GOOSEBUMPS!!!! Lover this.....

  • What beautiful sax section sound,,, that lead alto is really bright

  • This is pretty cool!

  • holy crap this soung should be in circd du cilla

  • wow frank elmo is pretty amazing hes also a really good band teacher :)

  • faster would be better

  • The most difficult composition. i love giant steps.

  • Frank Elmo… WOW!

  • wow. That solo was just effortless....whish I could do that >:-/ oh well either way it's a great tenor solo

  • one of the reasons i am gonna start playing the sax !

  • truly amazing!!!

  • DRUMMER IS MY TEACHER

  • thats a good jazz band

  • Awesome Tenor Sax Solo! I Just Learned Coltrane's Solo In Giant Steps Today By Ear! It Was Really Hard But It's Awesome!

  • killin tpt solo!

  • this is freaking awesome! :)

  • au Banan, Frank Almo ist ein Tier !

    Great Sound !

  • That's Big Band Sound, great.....What a Tenor Saxophone,amazing..

  • Excellent!!! Killer solos but that Tenor player my God, set it off!!! Phenomenal outro!!!

  • Nice Tenor...

  • sweet!!!!

  • sax lick 3:43 amazing

  • The drummer is awesome!!

  • That fat sax guy to the left is fucking great!!!

  • yea that guy on tenor sax is great. Love the sound.

Link is so hard to get a good sound on these days.

  • man that tenor player has a great sound.

  • That guy knows how to play a link

  • Well done!

  • omg... what an insanely awesome version of this crazy piece. frank elmo ftw!

  • Where would modern tenor sax players be without Coltrane? His sound is found in almost everyone.

  • WOW!

  • good arrangement and soloists

could i get my hands on it?

  • Frank Elmo is my band teacher. whooo

  • USED TO BE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL!

  • Luckyyyyyy

  • frank elmo with that biiggg nasty tone wheww ya you right

  • hehe i have the same mouthpiece as mr. elmo, freaking beast

  • I love the intro

  • Frank Elmo is freakin killing that sax solo.

  • Excellent version of the classic. Although very hard to improvise for an orchestra. This is more than satisfactory, it is excellent. Good job guys.

  • this arrangement kicks ass

  • I like this arrangement a lot :)

  • ié ! :)

  • Nice Job...

  • I had a nightmare......I had to improvise over Giant Steps.....

  • Rofl.

  • @imbatman333 oooh thats scary lol, i sure as heck cant do it

  • Oh. It's none other than curleysloth. The forever reigning judge of who and what is "capable but not tasteful."

You are obnoxious, curleysloth. Get a life.

  • I really LOVE that last tone Frank plays. Wonderful!

  • wow i teacher is frank elmo and proud to call him my teacher=p he works at ridgefield park high and hes a great teacher/musician

  • band teacher???

  • yep

  • it was just great. Frank Elmo all honors for you.

  • Good job, but not my favorite way to hear this song --- swing band. Still, I have to respect the arranger and the players.

  • Anyone know what Sax Frank Elmo is playing on?? maybe a Mark 6?

  • Yeah

  • who ever calls this silly really does not understand Jazz....

  • hmmmmm- -- I like it. Nice job guys!!

  • when i wrote that i didnt realize the solos would be good!

  • I'd love to play this!!!

  • man im so happy they play here in New Jersey alot. I gotta check these guys out at trumpets

  • Frank Elmo is the fucking shit...

  • that tenor soloist at the beginning has an incredible tone...wish i knew what mouthpiece he's using..

  • looks like otto link

  • jody jazz dv

  • Dat whole codenza is hot but dat part startin @ 3:44 all the way to the end is soooo sexy no homo lol

  • I'll let him know about it. hahha

  • Oh neva mind lol

  • Yo dis is a nice arrangement. N E one kno who its from????????

  • "John Coltrane's "Giant Steps" arranged by Willy Dalton." It says it in the description of the video.

  • I kno dats y i said neva mind rite afta i posted dat comment

  • I didn't see that comment haha

    My apologies. :P

  • oh no problem i guess its easy to miss things on this site lol

  • Yeah; it happened with both of us. hahaha

  • That was EXCELLENT! I loved that cadenza at the end!!

  • nice , mo foes nice.

  • yeah no matter how good it will never fill coltranes shoes. John Coltrane is a legend

  • yeah he was. i love it when people circular breathe while soloing- wynton does that a lot. very cool

  • How can you tell he was doing circular breathing? He took an actual breathe in between in the end a couple times....

  • THAT GUY WAS SICK!

  • the old dude on tenor kicks ASS. nice big band arrangement, still kept that manic coltrane vibe intact.

  • great sound elmo, lovin the tone

  • frank elmo does a fantastic job

  • Well it seems to swing enough. Just remember that Coltranes shoes are hard to fill. This is a big band arrangment so obviously it's going to be turned down a step.

  • Sure it does. Have you actually listened to it?

  • its not a swing song, its a bebop song.

  • So.. Bebop cant swing? You der brain.

  • well yeah it can, but some dude said that it doesnt "swing" enough. Its not really made to sound like swing.

  • he means the 8ths dont swing enough, not that this is a swing era song.

  • The faster the song gets, the less you can swing hard and not sound hokey. If this were half-speed, i'll bet they could swing the crap out of it.

  • These guys hit this one rigt out of the ball park with this song.PERFECTTTTTT.

  • Drums and all the solo players did really great especially the tenor sax at the end that was mad good.

  • Nice alto sound, what piece does chris hunter use? Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great version of Giant Steps--check out Chris Hunter on George Gruntz's Concert Jazz Band--most recent CD is Tiger by the Tail, but earlier CDs are great too--most feature Chris Hunter.

  • pff i love it ,

  • I just cant get enough of this arrangememnt.

any idea where i can get it?

  • I Play a 5* Otto Link

  • to saxcannon that is so lame im so jealous

P.S when i said lame i was bein sarcastic get it, get it, yeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaahhhhhhh the computor is hard to convey sarcasm so i had to make extra sure

  • ... i don't why youtube allow you to respond to individual comments if they're not going to be threaded so other users can see the context. the comment below is in response to the idiot way down the list who saw colour as relevant in commenting on this video.

  • Is Frank Elmo Playing on a Link? It looks like one and sounds sooo nice

  • He's playing a Jody Jazz DV mpc

  • yeah its an older model of the link i play on that model also nd i believe that trane played on the type of link its kool

  • I like this. Sure, John Coltraine's version will always be the best, but this comes close.

  • They should make a band version of Countdown. That would be awesome!!!!

  • i never thought that giant steps could be a big band arrangement. this is a good arrangment and frank elmo is bad...

p.s. when i mean bad i mean like very good

  • cruel teachers are the best, you will get better

  • hes a decent teacher but he can be a little... a... cruel sumtimes

  • there are actually quite a few tuning problems...other than that they are great! and studying with Frank Elmo must be a blast....especially if your a sax player lol

  • i dont kno what your talking about curly. they play it beautifuly for an all white band

  • what sort of ignorant comment is that?

  • Dear God. I'm sorry to insult people, but this is horrible. It's like a parody -- Giant Steps with no soul. Don't these poeple know that Giant Steps is a beautiful piece of music, not just a forum for horn players to show off machizmo? Totally sterile.

  • What????? This is a great arrangement. It is totally cool. And these are very musical and soulful musicains. Trane's tune is in very capable hands.

  • Comment removed

  • hmm frank elmo (sax) is actually my music teacher at my school

  • AGH!!! LUCKY! wow, so what's it like?

  • Frank is great, he's my sax teacher

  • so what is his mpc setup?

  • Jody Jazz DV...Rigotti 3 1/2 I believe

  • Haha, Giant Steps... Incredible Peice and well Frank had some trouble taking Trane's signature Giant Steps licks that he plays throughout the peice... Frank, That was very nice and I haven't heard some originality like that at the end in a little while.

    I play a Otto Link 5 (Trane Played a 5)

  • finally ive come across someone who plays a 5 its an incredible mouthpiece isnt it i was wondering can u put a ultimate ligature on a 5??

  • I am sure you can but I am not all too failiar with diffrent ligs on Links.. Uhh I put a runyon on eon mine but Honestly I just use the Normal Otto Link Lig

  • well i use the normal link lig right now also but ive been looking for new ligs jus to experiment wit my sound

  • i use an eddie daniels rovner on my otto 7...pretty good. 6 different tones u can get

  • I think that's actually a guardala mouthpiece that elmo is using. He is using it with the "Ultimate Ligature" by Francois Louis

  • Actually I think you're both wrong, I believe he is using a Jody Jazz DV mouthpiece in this video.

  • Very nice!! props!

  • That's a great interpretation of Giant Steps. I love it.

    Seán

  • Great arrangement, solos and sound! 5 stars!

  • this is probably my favorite jazz piece..and a great arrangement btw...and frank elmo is INSANE

  • Cool arrangment i like it!

  • perfect! 5/5

  • Wow! I'm amazed. Frank Elmo is tooooo good. If you can could you ask him what type of mouthpice and size reed he uses. Nice arrangement too....how'd u cum up with this?

  • It looks like a Otto Link "Super Tone Master"

many people use a 7* but that would be a question for Frank Elmo himself. I personally use one with a 9 opening with reeds ranging from strength 2 to 3, really depends what i need to play. Also, probably 85%+ of link users play on rico royal reeds, as they seem to harmonize well with the mouthpiece.

Props to the arranger, i really like it :)

  • Who arranged this tune? Where can I find it for my band?

  • This is my arrangement--check the text. Right now I don't have a publisher and I'm not looking to sell the arrangement until I record it.

  • You did a great job on this..you are a great musician.

  • Great music, well done. If you ever record a cd of your music do please let me know.

    Seán

  • alto articulates just like parker

  • OMG this is sick

  • got to love frank elmo's playing!! great solos by trumpet and alto too.

  • AwesOME!!!

  • Outstanding!!!

  • I'M PLAYING A JODY JAZZ DV!! .Frank Elmo

  • That Tenor player is fucking nuts, and props to that trumpet player! I've only ever know two other trumpet players, play over Giant Steps and one of them is Tom Harrel. Sweet Arrangement

  • Coltrane would be proud . . excellent job !

  • Bravo Gentelmen.

  • it makes me sad that this band hasn't hit it big, this was very good, and u guys deserve better than the 20 ppl (that it sounded like) in the audience. good work!

  • Show 'em how it's done, gentlemen.

  • how long did it take u to come up with this song. and what kind of moutpiece do u use, metal or hard rubber, or plastic

  • I'm the arranger and guitar player so I can't help with the saxophone questions. The arrangement took several hours.

  • What sax player are you talking about?

  • Left to right: Metal, Hard Rubber, Metal, and it looks like a Jody Jazz Hard Rubber metal look a like.

  • Metal, Rubber, Metal, Metal, Rubber looking like metal*

  • Wow, that Tenor player was tiiiiiiiight. Excellent arrangement!

  • nice alto solo

  • I like ur arrangements dude!

  • tight arrangement and interesting solos for the most part, the the rhythm section and dynamics leave somthing to be desired, the somthing thing lacks energy. the piano and drums aren't resonding and listening, but the cadenza is cooking.

  • I'd love to buy this chart, where do I go about purchasing this arrangement?

  • i think it was arranged by Willy Dalton, the guy who posted this video.

  • right now I don't have a publisher and I'm not looking to sell the chart. I'm working on a recording for this band and possibly after the recording is released I will publish the chart. Thanks so much for your interest--Willy Dalton
