You can use your spine to generate the force of the push. I figured out that if I relax down to my feet and keep the crown of my head in line with my tail bone, and then just use the middle of my spine to push in it works every time. Your tail bone and your head stay in line and your lower back and dantian push in. Your spine becomes almost like a bow or guitar string to generate the force.
So - is Ark shutting him down intentionally (demo), or is the guy not able to generate motion from that position? Ie: it's a training exercise for the other guy in trying to find the ground? Your friend from QJ and JF :)
When I tried (with Gerald) with and without extended fingers - I realized that extended fingers give other sensations but also lead to something different from the goal of the exercice. Extended finger give more tension in the forearm as you create longer lever, the person pushing on your finger will bow you more easily but not really unballance you because there is less connection - more direct contact (with the palm) disrupt the ballance because easier connection.
thanks for clearing that up. i can see what you mean. And I disagree that extending the fingers in this drill would make it "harder" as the guy in black seems to be letting his wrist collasp to the extended fingers of the other guy. I think this drill depends more on upper body flexibility and whole body structure than just extended fingers. am i wrong?(just my 2)
I was hoping to incorporate this sort of drill into my own training to gain a better understanding. hope fully someday I will make it to tokyo to train with you guys. Keep the videos comin'!
I notice now that "Ark" made the exercice more difficult to himself by pushing with his fingers and not the palm - In february I had suggested the same to Gerald. another thing Ark seems to put/push his hip forward and therefore his gravity center seems over the last third of his feet. I suppose (not sure I am) it makes possible to push a bit with the feet
If you use any individual muscles to resist the push (including sending force from the ground out to the hands, you'll be bounced back by the guy, assuming he has structure)
So imagining as if you have a sheet of paper in betwixt your palms, try and affect the other guy without putting your weight into him.

You'd have to feel it to under stand.
It's not upper boxy flexibility, but it does partly have to do with structure. There's a lot of physical movement going on internally.

Keep the right stance while pushing;
Do not move your hands down or highward (my english is worsening) and control their direction.
Keep low shoulders - the least strenght in your harms as possible.
Try to keep your gravity center over the rectangle made by your feets;
Keep alignment of your body.
The exercices seems visually simple - but fondamentaly difficult to carry on.

This looks like good solid fundamentals but can you explain whats going on here?

Rrmmm... hard to explain in words.
Think of it this way. If you understand the concept of the "upper dantien" (the one in the chest), you manipulate that with the lower dantien.
The idea is that you remain stable and extend your arms out into the other guy without resting on him.

At any point the other guy should be able to take his hands away and you should be rock solid (even if it looks like you're leaning forward a bit).
The pushing the hips forward is mainly because the tension is "rising up" from the feet, and falling back down the spine (making one circuit).
The arms themselves move rather independently.
The input force comes from the elbow on out.
