I condemn you for using this song in a twisted interpretation for your own purposes, it's just wrong in many ways.
You may know that King Richard the Lion former duke of Normandy (who actually lead a fair number of charges) was succeeded by King John in 1199. We've seen the last of good king Richard (died 41) Ring out the past his name lives on (we know him today) Roll out the bones (remains in France) and Raise up your pitcher Raise up your glass to Good King John (celebrating the new king)
While you are absolutely correct about the history, don't be too hard on the poster. King John wasn't well liked in his time, so when this track was first published (I am now 64) we took it to be a thinly-disguised attack on the political masters of our day. Which was well before the Bushes, Iraq, et al. Every generation sees things from their own perspective. That has been the case since the time of Bach if not before. At least he has posted this SD track for everyone to enjoy.
if anyone legitimately thinks that the US political system exists as anything more than show and tell, then i pity you friend. we like to praise democracy, but democracy is technically rule by the poor, not by the masses as is often assumed. but we don't even have that, we have one of two options, whichever seems more acceptable to you: rule by a very small elite who condition their slaves to submit, or rule by the indecisive few who are truly ignorant to the politics they are voting for.
i always thought this song was about King Richard the Lionheart who wasted all his countrys wealth on his crusade and when he finally died at the hand of a french cook with a arrow to the throat, his asspick of a brother King John reigned but at least he had Robin Hood to annoy him during his reign.

@xdrunkenplatypus Okay I am not french and I respect your view on terrorism but you cannot say that GW Bush was one of your best presidents that is ridiculous he was and still is a dumbass. And by the way it is spelt opinion
@xdrunkenplatypus i am from the USA and i will tell you that the war in iraq had nothing to do with the world trade center attacks. the war there war pushed on this country by Bush with all his lies about weapons of mass destruction. they were never found and it was a premise for him to go to war for whatever reason the great thing about this country is that people don't have to be afraid to speak out against someone like Bush and are allowed to speak their minds and not be sheep
@txeire - I am of the same thinking. I think Obama might be a hair better but almost indistinguishable from Bush...especially on the economy. They both suck...
@Libertine62 - Sooo... Kent State? Nixon? Weed? Beer? Huh? While the Abu Ghraib incident was certainly wrong, how was this attributed to President Bush? People like to say that responsibility for wrongdoing lies at the top of the chain, but do we really believe that the president told the troops to humiliate and torture the prisoners? Take the January 15th incident (2011) where soldiers killed innocent civilians in Afghanistan. Did Obama tell them to do it?
it's because Bush and Obama are not the boss, just the spokesman...but they have the same bosses! Bush in his own words said he felt like he was more of a public relations president more than anything which is funny because everybody clowned on him and hated him...but then again IMO this was the whole point, we were supposed to think he was stupid and misguided, not a cold calculating war pig just like his Daddy and their masters. peace yo.
@Libertine62 True, Obama is doing a better job than anyone in the mainstream would have expected. Still too left economically to deserve reelection, though.
@jwmellott - Are you really trying to say that extending the Bush tax cuts proves that Obama has taken an economically leftist position? Or by passing HCR with a mandate to buy insurance in the marketplace, instead of allowing people to buy into medicare if they wanted to, is leftist? It sounds right of center to me.
@txeire Obama is much worse since he was able to triple dept in three months flat since he inauguration, he's also bad since he doesn't seem to give a damn about his own country because he's too busy kissing the asses of every other country on the face of the earth while his own in starving and in his need.

@xdrunkenplatypus I can't leave America because I don't live there.I don't even like visiting there.Face it,dickhead, the rest of the world and half of America is anti-war and definitely anti-George Bush, that pathetic, draft dodging, cowardly child of privilege. And a retard, just like you.
this is a great song however i feel the video takes it out of context a bit...the song is every bit as much about "king john" (if not more) as it is about king richard...i am only seeing the negative side in this video
@jab3785 - I don't know what happened to him but he is gone. I know in talking to him privately that there were some issues for him here and he expected to be banned eventually...and the same fate could be in store for me too. It is a shame because his videos were all top notch and were partly the inspiration to do the videos I have.
@Libertine62 --Melegorm--I wish he would return. His work (and yours) is top notch.
If you see him (...and I'm assuming he is a male) ...tell him "Hey" and "Thanks".
If you feel the need to take off, I do wish you would reconsider. I usually only check "The Dan" posts, anymore...as the videos and posts are the most intriguing and thought inspiring. If you are being pushed out--let us help push back!
If it is to be--then thank you for your gifts,....and take care.
that is correct. the copywrong geniuses went after him again and he moved elsewhere. cant say here due to the bs from yt etc.
i think melegorm was responsible for a lot of SD music sales, more than they ever lost. besides i bought almost all of these albums so i cant listen to them here?
anyway. our loss that he is gone. he does great work. i should have downloaded all of them while they were available.
@jab3785 Well, if and when he returns, I would like to be off his hit list. For some reason, I've been banned by him but it was his videos that reminded of Steely Dan.
As someone from another country,I find what's happening in American politics bizarre.Soon terrorists and lunatics like Timothy McVeigh and Eric Rudolf will be mainstream heroes, with their own comic books, using very small words so their followers can actually read them.
Damn, why is this band so underrated? I dare to say some of their songs are better than those written by Pink Floyd. Oh my goodness, what a rhythm. They have one of the best guitar solos ever...
@jimbobo1000 - If you think Obama is a socialist you wouldn't know one if he kicked you right square in the brain. Obama is a pro-corporate centrist just like Bill Clinton was...Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), now there is a socialist.
actualy i am a senoir citizen.i used that word as a attention getter.also i am not a fan of bush either.i just thougt someone might expose obama for the damage he is doing to this country, especialy the dficit spending.
@jimbobo1000 A senoir citizen?!? What school did you attended that you go and abandon your writing rules?!? Sir, the Bush Jr. administration damaged credibility and lives and it's just only the first year in this administration.
@Khultan - I will try to u/l more. On Mel...well we'll have to disagree. Mel is a good friend of mine here. In fact if it wasn't for him I would have never posted what I have. So you will never hear me speak ill of him.
we had no business in Iraq . It more than Likely would have happened anyway but the focus should have been on Afghanistan . The Taliban is what hit the US And they should have been the Focous ..Death to the Towelheads !!!!
guess what? afganistan is just as bad and wrong- so don't be sold on that bullshit- we can never change what is going on in afganistan and it is not helping being there.there is no proof that the taliban hit the building.and you're type of hate breeds hate all over and that comes back to us- death to all towel heads? that is a very short sighted statement-
open you're heart innocent people are dying and all humans are just as important-
I agree with the statements of peace, but I do believe there is good evidence that terrorist allied with some group of the middle east is responsible for the terrible and might I add unforgivable crimes committed on that day. I know someone who died in that attack. I keep a level head, I'm not radical like they are. But, I still think someone should come to justice for that monstrosity.
I have to agree. you have a great perspective. I just don't want a crime like that to be another thing just swept under the rug of history like it never happened. THOUSANDS DIED! And everyone stood and gawked at the towers crying. We thought it was over. I knew right away that it was just starting. I agree, we must have peace, but we can't just forget.
@JazzForLife0327 i agree with you,it's just that we have to look at the bigger picture- people are killed via terrorist acts all over the world- it must be dealt with by all the countries around the world who are for freedom- and as horrible as the towers were- it is no worse than blowing up of buses ,night clubs, ships and various other buildings around the world-
many in the usa think when it happens here we should go around and nuke everything- we cant forget because it is an ongoing issue
LISTEN! I'M AGREEING WITH YOU! I understand what my fellow Americans think, but there are many people just like me who have people like you (even though you are being very intelligent and civil about it) automatically think we want to NUKE the entire globe. It's not like that. I want peace just as much as you do. Anyone with half a brain does. It's just that I want ALL of this to stop, not just there terror in the united states. I don't want any more bloodshed either. Now lets enjoy the music.
ReindeerGirl 1200...let's run off sometime to England and play this song as we course West -northwest out of Luton, headed for the battlegrounds, with this song blaring out a '71 MGB (topless) ...the car would be...okay, okay you can be topless, too! LOL!
"He meant to shine, ...until the end of the line".
Right now my observation about Afghanistan is to point out a very telling nickname the country has..."The Graveyard of Empires". They got that nickname for a damn good reason...if anyone doesn't believe me feel free to look it up. And we're gonna send 40,000 more troops into that death trap? Not sure how good that is going to work out seeing there is no plan and a government in Kabul that just held a rigged election.
I generally try not to take a side in all this, I'm a historian by training and all, but I like what you've done here on its surface without getting to into its content.
Everytime I see that picture of Pat Tillman my blood boils. We have failed to live up to the example set by those who died in service to the vision of our country, whatever that means =/
Thank you. I am flattered that someone versed in history found it interesting. I am far from an expert but I pride myself on having a working knowledge on the subject. It is a layered piece. I am also trying to show how Nixon's vision for the presidency, and what he did in office, led us onto the path to the Unitary Executive, which we saw come to fruition in the G.W. Bush administration. Presidents, all of them, are above the law now...almost like they are kings.
And as far as Pat Tillman obsevations go, I agree on both counts.
I feel we have failed to live up to our responsibility as citizens. In the military people can only follow orders...or discipline breaks down. The rest of us need to be questioning our civilian leaders in Washington about how and why our forces are being put into harms way...and more importantly are they being given what is needed to win. And if we aren't giving them what they need for victory we should bring 'em home
I am Independent from any political party. I think they are BOTH irresponsible and wrong. But, I think the Republicans are, in ideal, a favorable party to me. It was harder for me to be a Democrat, I believe than it was for me to be a Republican. However, I disapprove of many Republican bills and notions. An addendum, though, would be the treatment to troops. I think that no matter what you find on the internet or whatever, that the troops should be respected. Even if they are portrayed as evil.
I have no problem with the men and women who serve to protect and defend our freedom. I hold them in the highest regard. I have a HUGE problem with the politicians who show little or no regard for their lives. Plus they get treated like shit by the system when they return...it is like the military views them like a piece of machinery that needs to be depreciated and written off. I am on the other side of the fence from you...an independent who can't stand the R's. They're fascist bastards.
I can't stand either side. I just side with the Republicans on most things, since my family is chalk full of them! I agree with you 1 million %. And am now subscribed. I appreciate your support of the troops since I have 2 people serving in family. I also had an uncle die in Vietnam and a Grandfather in WW2. I know how it is and I just wanted to see how you felt.
I am curious after 8 years of well documented examples of George Bush cravenly abusing his power how Obama is doing that? I am not defending Obama per se but if you make such an accusation provide some facts.
I gave a good example. He thinks he's great. As far as the abuse power, Bush did that in his last two years a lot I think. He was pretty socialist. Like obama wants to be. But even his wife said "For once I am proud of my country.." He and his wife at least think they are all that. It's in that look. Great song though.
Bush was socialist as he passed laws to help poor downtrodden rich oligarchs? As for Michelle Obama's comments they are noteworthy, that being that the American people looked passed race to nominate then elect her husband, but in no way suggest a socialist agenda...unless you feel that this country being ruled by anyone other than white people represents socialism.
Glad you are enjoying the song though...that comment by you is why I up-rated your reply.
I agree, the Obama Administration is a slicker version of the Bush Administration in the last two years. As for Michelle's proud of her country for the first time comment, she made it sound as if this country is a racist piece of crap and it's done nothing.
P.S Any idea what the song Midnight Cruiser is about ?
I am in no way a specialist. Hell, I'm not even out of High School. But, I can't get past the fact that I dislike our current president. I portrayed Joe Biden in our town's mock HUGE mock election for A.P. History 2 and I swear, everything he has done is against what he said he was going to do. I mean. When other countries start to enjoy your presidency more than the people in it, I think something is a little wrong. Bush may have been irresponsible, but I think SOME of his intentions were o.k.
Obviously Tom Hartmann is the ultimate authority for you on how the world works. The 90s were the greatest and longest period of economic stability the USA has had thanks to those policies. Int'l banking families wanted to take down the us and the rest of the world. Right...... of course they would because they just want to make everything go to shit. Whatever helps you make sense of the world
This song was released in October 1972. Not even the incomparable Donald Fagen & Walter Becker could project 30 years into the future and create this song as an anti-Bush diatribe. Now that Obama is president all wars have ceased however.
Ronnie RayGun was a good 'ol commie fighter from the 50s and a hippie hater in the 60s. He was largely out of touch with America by the mid-80s. I voted for RayGun in 84 and he was the best ALTERNATIVE at the time... but he WAS NOT the best President in US history. He was a good alternative at the time and was a veggie brain by 1986. He traded arms with the Iranians for dum-dum sake... remember? Sheesh yall are dorks.
Bush, spent way too much money. I think he handled 9-11 great. We needed to go Araganstan.spelling, but not Iraq. I voted for him both times, but would not have the second time. They are many too big deal about water boarding. These guys want to kill us. Obama, got 44 percent of the white vote, and it was out of guit. Look what happened in DC sat. People are sick of the how they spend our money finally. I wish I could have been there. He is a one termer. Nice guy, wrong job.
I'm a Libertarian myself, but Dubya was a Double-Dog-Down-Major-Fuckup from Day 1.
It's the simple, obvious facts kids...
I'm actually JUST old enough to remember America before it went from a purient, self-obsessed, 'family values' mentality to the current, LAW ENFORCEMENT model.
My family has been here since the early-1600's - And through the Dutch, French, and, ultimately, the British's influence on my continent; one thing is certain - A vacuum abhors Steely Dan.
As much as one may agree with your sentiments, using this song to advance politics is worthy of an unprotected power surge.

They both suck...

homer4528 1 year ago
@Libertine62 - Sooo... Kent State? Nixon? Weed? Beer? Huh? While the Abu Ghraib incident was certainly wrong, how was this attributed to President Bush? People like to say that responsibility for wrongdoing lies at the top of the chain, but do we really believe that the president told the troops to humiliate and torture the prisoners? Take the January 15th incident (2011) where soldiers killed innocent civilians in Afghanistan. Did Obama tell them to do it?
viagedern 11 months ago
@Libertine62 At least Bush went to Congress first and there was an (at least) ostensible threat to America.
havishamcarmody 11 months ago
it's because Bush and Obama are not the boss, just the spokesman...but they have the same bosses!

Still too left economically to deserve reelection, though.
jwmellott 1 month ago
@jwmellott - Are you really trying to say that extending the Bush tax cuts proves that Obama has taken an economically leftist position? Or by passing HCR with a mandate to buy insurance in the marketplace, instead of allowing people to buy into medicare if they wanted to, is leftist? It sounds right of center to me.

I agree with the statements of peace, but I do believe there is good evidence that terrorist allied with some group of the middle east is responsible for the terrible and might I add unforgivable crimes committed on that day.
JazzForLife0327 2 years ago
@JazzForLife0327 i agree with you,it's just that we have to look at the bigger picture- people are killed via terrorist acts all over the world- it must be dealt with by all the countries around the world who are for freedom- and as horrible as the towers were- it is no worse than blowing up of buses ,night clubs, ships and various other buildings around the world-
many in the usa think when it happens here we should go around and nuke everything- we cant forget because it is an ongoing issue
fezzappa 2 years ago

Everytime I see that picture of Pat Tillman my blood boils. We have failed to live up to the example set by those who died in service to the vision of our country, whatever that means =/
niffgiffler 2 years ago
Libertine62 2 years ago

RamboLambo2 2 years ago
I have no problem with the men and women who serve to protect and defend our freedom. I hold them in the highest regard. I have a HUGE problem with the politicians who show little or no regard for their lives. Plus they get treated like shit by the system when they return...it is like the military views them like a piece of machinery that needs to be depreciated and written off. I am on the other side of the fence from you...an independent who can't stand the R's. They're fascist bastards.
Libertine62 2 years ago
I can't stand either side. I just side with the Republicans on most things, since my family is chalk full of them! I agree with you 1 million %. And am now subscribed. How so? Please explain...
I am curious after 8 years of well documented examples of George Bush cravenly abusing his power how Obama is doing that? I am not defending Obama per se but if you make such an accusation provide some facts.
Libertine62 2 years ago
I gave a good example. He thinks he's great. As far as the abuse power, Bush did that in his last two years a lot I think. He was pretty socialist. Like obama wants to be. But even his wife said "For once I am proud of my country.." He and his wife at least think they are all that. It's in that look. Great song though.
docbrownenterprises 2 years ago
Bush was socialist as he passed laws to help poor downtrodden rich oligarchs? As for Michelle Obama's comments they are noteworthy, that being that the American people looked passed race to nominate then elect her husband, but in no way suggest a socialist agenda...unless you feel that this country being ruled by anyone other than white people represents socialism.
Glad you are enjoying the song though...that comment by you is why I up-rated your reply.
Libertine62 2 years ago

Whatever helps you make sense of the world
aputnam93 2 years ago
Author Tom Hartmann asserts that the policies of USA s destruction started in the Reagan administration
re-enforced by Bush 1 and Clinton allowed many of the policies to continue for the coup de grace of Bush II.
Face it, this was an engineered take down of
the USA by Int'l banking families.
