Wing Commander 5: Prophecy was my first Wing Commander game that I ever played in the series. Everybody at wcnews says the original 4 in the series were pretty awesome too. These were the best dogfights ever. Freespace II, Tachyon The Fringe, Starlancer, & Freelancer are all awesome followups to this game.
In game combat certainly looks a lot better than I initially thought it would.. seeing as there isn't that much of a gap in development for both games, ie 1995-1997 suprised how much a difference it can make...
This game is still fun. It kind of reminds me of Independence War and Homeworld in how clean it looks; all three will be great for years to come for those who originally enjoyed it.
Too bad about the live actors and Wing Commander: The Shitty Movie parts, though. It likely means we'll never see another game.
You know, since I first played this game when I was stupidly young and haven't seen it since, I was expecting it to look awful now that I've decided to try and track the game down; as it turns out it doesn't actually look that bad, save for maybe the somewhat choppy textures.
Ah, I remember how chilling this first mission was... Although i will admit that Prophecy was my first and last WC game... I think I've been seriously missing out on a good series.
Actually, do you have any ideas if this will work in Vista 64? I tried installing it on an XP computer when I found the discs last (No idea where they are now... I think my parents threw them out. Bah.) but the game wouldn't even install.
@MGlBlaze just installed on vista 32 bit using the gold edition. explore the first disk, find setup.exe and run as administrator. after it installs go into the game's install directory and find prophecy.exe and right click, go to properties, go to compatibility, compatibility mode for windows 98 or similar. in the game maybe try software graphics instead
I recommend that you get the Gold edition. It also features Secret Ops.
Oh btw: Once you have Prophecy, go to wcnews dot comm and get all Prophecy upgrades and a 3DFX emulator (like Zeckensack's Glide Wrapper or DgVooDoo).
You've definately missed out on a great series of games. If you ever get the chance. Play them through from Wing Commander 1 to Wing Commander Prophecy. Amazing series.
Some people have luck if they cut the hardware acceleration down, especially the audio card acceleration. Seems the biggest trouble is usually the full motion video gets choppy if the sound card is maxed.
One of the few games that had the cinematics well done. Even some 'plot splitting' according how missions go.... earlier parts had more though. Only split I found was when you could choose wether to attack kilrathi or not.
I prefered WC2. Ships were more balanced. I did like the story of this one in that you did not know quite what was going on but I much perfered the Kilrathy as an enemy.
The new enemies in Prophecy are called the Nephilim. The fighters are Devil Rays, Lampreys, Mantas, Morays, Rays, Remoras, Skates, Squids, and Stingrays. Stingrays can form a super fighter cluster with 3 fighters, and they shoot a very damaging plasma attack. Other fighters have special surprises you'll likely see during the recordings.
Yes, there is a way to remove the scanlines. I think it's using a switch from the run option in Windows. To me, it's not a huge deal if they are there or not. If the preference is to have the scanlines off, I can find the switch. Missions 1-4 are already recorded, so I won't be able to remove the scanlines from them.
Thanks for posting this! It brings back some good memories. By the way, wasn't there something in the options about removing the scanlines from the video clips?
I LOVED this game

Hey, that lock-on sound is the same one from Star Wars Episode 4 and SW: Rebel Assault 1 and 2.

Question: What's the new enemy in WC:Prophecy? I think they could be helix based or something like that. Oh and what classes of ships do they use?
