  • well alfred hitchcock, amazing as he was, won no oscar for best director.... :(

  • awesome movie and actors!

  • The best actores don't win oscars: they have nominations xD It's the truth LOOOOOL

  • Everyone keeps wondering why Leo didn't get an Oscar yet, well I used to but I started to understand that it might actually be because he has this same sort of way of tackling his roles, I mean he's a terrific actor and all, but he kinda has this Leo style of acting, brilliant ok but the same as always. Usually they give oscars to actors who have drastically altered their performance and completely got into character that you no longer recognize them as this famous person no more.

  • @littlep0li Why didnt Jim Carrey then get well even a nomination for Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind?

  • @Schmidteren I can't speculate why some actors didn't get nominated, if we're gonna go there then why didn't Brad Pitt get nominated for Jesse James, or maybe Emile Hirsch for Into the Wild? I dunno what rlly blows the academy away, but I know that those who win in the end are the actors who completely outdo themselves that they just STOP ACTING...they BECOME the character, and while you watch the film you actually forget that this is just celebrity X in disguise!!

    e.g. Heath Ledger's Joker <3

  • i would get star struck

  • I skipped the other guys parts to watch leonardos'

  • For the amazing work that he has done thus far, Leonardo diCaprio should have at least three Oscars by now.

  • I would have sex with Leonardo DiCaprio. And I'm a dude. And I'm not even gay.

  • @kickodude Cool..

  • @kickodude but you are. & there's nooothing wrong w/ that.

  • @sjmoy1 You realize I was joking right?

  • @kickodude don't be ashamed. be freeee!!!!!!!

  • Stream.``It,''Now,,'

    Copy",.&`".Paste.`,

  • I've gained A LOT of respect for DiCaprio since he started working with Marty.

  • @TheHockeyCentral he's grown up very nicely I think.

  • In terms of acting Leo over the past few years has become one of the best in the world

  • After watching this, i think that he went to the island thinking he was investigating something (but he wasn't, he was being sent their by his doctor who was seen as his co worker) but when he finally came to terms with the fact that his wife killed his kids, he didn't want to live anymore.

Hence, why he said at the end "Would you rather live as a monster or die as a good man." So i think he was pretending to be mad at the end, so they would purposely take out his brain.

  • @Meghandanchlo he didnt go to the island he had always been on it the scene were hes on the boat is just him halucinating

  • 77,777 <3

  • Great performance by Leo, and of course, let's not overlook the other cast. They are just great, absolutely amazing film and a great performance. Just outstanding!

  • Shutter Island is an immense film! Leo is just amazing from start to finish! Where is his oscar??

  • He is a nice simple-hearted-person

    I like that

his fame didn't make him change his personality

    or anything!

  • I knew he was crazy the whole film, but I was shocked by how crazy and why.

  • DiCaprio-the son of God in this film!

  • Martin Scorsese-is God!!!

  • Realy Original Moovie..... There is a moment in actors life when he chooses where to act And Dicaprio never chooses poor movies.... I respect him for that... Because REALY GUYS there are no bad movies with Dicaprio :D

  • and leo doesnt have an oscar because.....?

complete bs...i hate the academy awards.

  • verry confusing movie

  • Dicaprio was so miscast in this film.

  • Lonardo DiCaprio + boat = Big problem

  • everyone who walks out of this movie acts weird for the next 30 mins. It fucks with your head like any good movie should.

  • amaziiiiiiiiiiing incredibly amazing movie

  • is it just me or is this interviewer on speed??? lol... maybe he is just nervous!!! you can tell they have picked up on the fact that he is talking 90 wds a minute..lol they are trying to slow him down by responding to questions in a slow monotone..lol

  • are you really thinking he's crazy and a patient on shuter island for 2 years? maybe everything was planed, that's why they gave him ciagarettes and medicine all the time.. because he questioned the whole "thing"... i can't decide but i'm not TOTALLY convinced that he's crazy and everything....

  • @LenaHoni I feel the same way.

  • totally fucked with my mind :P loved it

  • this movie is like they got to the island and someone lost the script, and they just made it up as they went.

  • amazing !!

  • can anyone explain the significance of his wife in his visions? because she never is portrayed like a villian but she did a horrible thing

  • @TheMossad921

SPOILERS (just in case someone hasnt seen it):

well because in his state of mind she just died in the fire so at the beginning it is just him missing her a bit but that is what is making him go crazy because he just remembers her death as an accident because he couldnt come to terms that he killed her.. idk if i am answering your question... and also he is halucinating so he is like going crazy.. not sure if i was able to answer it XD

  • @argbarb8 no you actually did quite well that makes a lot of sense because you feel sorry for her and i guess if she died in the "fire" you should feel sorry for her. Such a powerful movie

  • @TheMossad921

yeah you just feel like he is missing her so it is normal that he sees her in his dreams and what not..but then to truth kindda starts to slip.. do you remember the first time he sees her in his dream and then she starts bleeding from the stomach? after watching the whole movie we realise that it's because that is where she was shot.

these film writers are smart people :P...super powerful movie..leaves you wondering about your sanity :P

  • kiera knikley doesn't look like her father ben knikley at all

  • the documentary they mentioned is "Titicut Follies"

  • This movie is amazing! Yet, I still don't quite get it! If anyone has read the book, then what is the meaning of the end of the movie?

  • @Venicequez

the ending of the book is slightly different... in the film it is clear that Teddy has been taken for a labotomy but in the book it just ends with Teddy saying "Yeah, we are aren't we?" you should read it, it's brilliant

  • @TaskMaster619 finally someone who's read the book :) i've read it about 10 times and love it! it's brilliant!

  • @TaskMaster619 that's true ..so he still got a plan right?

  • this is a good movie but it was prodictable i knew how it was gonna

end so yeah it was pridictable but still a good movie

  • I love this movie so much.

  • 1:34 TOY GUN

  • What is the movie that you and Ben mentioned seeing?

  • leonardo dicaprio was amazingly hot in titanic!! AND .... HE STILL FREAKIN IS HOT! <3 I LOVE HIM!

  • @rubyhaleybenjamin really!? u mean leo

  • @chanelprincess16 She's talking about Ben Kingsley. Ben Kingsley plays Anne Frank's dad, not Leo.

  • @rubyhaleybenjamin is he a good actor?

  • The book is 100x better. I am soooo thankful I read the book before I saw the movie.

Fight club is my favorite movie. Shutter Island is my favorite book.

  • @Jeremy1281988 But have totally different endings, i say i like the movies ending better.

  • @derli2013 Yeah, I'm not going to argue that. It made you think.

  • @Jeremy1281988

Whats different about the book and the movie?

i still didnt get the movie

  • @Evo10Rocks Books are usually simply better.

And these type of movies/books are the type that make you think long after you see them. That is why I thought the book was so epic. It blew my mind.

  • how come any actor keeps getting better and better.Love you Leonardo!

  • i love the fact that he masters so many different dialects ! Awsome :D

  • @SomeThingsNever agree

  • Great interview. You really got the best out of these two guys.

  • the second time around my shins bled ....know what i mean?

  • @jakethemovieguy

HUGE props for the Escher reference. This man knows his art. ;)

I'd even go as far as to say there was a strong "Hitchcockian" undertone to the film. It feels like you, as the viewer, are kind of flailing around in the dark along with this character trying to figure out what's happening and why everything about it feels off right up until the last second. I'd read the book, knew how the story would end, and still felt like I was going into the mystery fresh. Brilliantly done.

  • Leonardo thank you! Amazing actor i love you!

  • yo i watched this movie so many times. 1st time in theathers is the best movie you can watch. leo is such an actor "inception" is amazing too

  • @MegaLollipopLove ya both he was hiding something deep down in his mind...coincidence??

  • @finalman25 lol who knows.

    i love them :)

  • This was a good film.I would u nderstan dit better if i watched it again, but i dont watch movies twice.it was confusing and weird.reminds me of the machinist and K Pax

  • this movie is depressing lol

  • @OmGiTzNiCk No, you should watch The Road! now that's depressing!

  • was that robert de niro on 4:09

  • This was the best horror movie I ever seen best ending as well.

  • this film goes inside your mind and fucks up everything twice then comes out leaving you so confused. Amazing movie.

  • I love listening to actors talking about how they preform. But show us an actor like jennifer aniston or megan fox and they sound so uninspired!

  • After this movie I became Leonardo's fan.

Now he's my type, when he got older! ♥

And the movie was freakin' amazing.

  • This is my favorite movie

  • People who say the movie has "a twist" at the end of the film are incorrect, it's just the way it is the day when you suddenly realize your insane, so there's no twist - it's a only symptom of waking up & stepping back into reality

  • @IronicallyVague I get your "act-smart" point, but your wrong.

A twist is a turnaround of the story; something that you werent expecting. It's like saying that the fact of Darth Vader being Luke Skywalkers father wasnt a twist because he'd been his father all his life; it's just that we didn't know about it. >.<'

It has nothing to do with what the characters knew, it has everything to do with what the audience was expecting. The audcience was not supposed to expect the ending of this movie.

  • @marcuslind90 Seriously...A Star Wars analogy? .....Really?

But I see your point, I guess it was supposed to be a twist in the ending, yet whenever I'm in the asylum & I see them admit either a Detective, Jesus, or Napoleon I tend to suspect the one in for a twist had just walked in the door...

  • One of my favorite movies of all time. Wow, people do agree this movie was good, but for some reason it captured me so strongly. Amazing

  • @thepiratep Agreed best movie ever made.

  • the twist at the end is incredible. the whole film we establish a close relationship to dicaprio (edward daniels) then we realise hes mad just like the rest

  • this movie makes me scared to be left behind anywhere

  • i just watched this movie, and to make a long story short it is amazing, unlike any other movie i have ever seen. I tought shutter island was going to be some kind of a horror movie. well, i can't say it was, it's kind of hard to describe it. totally one of it's kind. like many people say, it's a mindfuck. you will feel amazing after you watch it and think about what you just watched, it's a really clever movie, and the actors where amazing. decaprio was excellent and so was the rest of the team

  • Love the movie, such a great mindfuck and awesome ending, probably drives most of the viewers crazy

  • @DieselVsVans The ending drove me so freaking crazy

  • @DieselVsVans . "mindfuck" the exact word i thought when I saw it. amazing movie, makes me wonder though why would they pick this kind of trailer, it completely unjustified the whole plot of the movie

  • @zouzounakiaable i know right? it messes up the plot totally

  • go see this movie!!! it's briljant

you dont know what the f*ck is going on but its fun to look at

  • This movie is for teenagers in search of their first sexual experience. Nothing much for the experienced mind, you jerk offs.

  • @Congresista

So what you're saying is that you didn't understand it and your stupidity makes you lash out at Youtubers?

  • @southrules I understood the movie perfectly, man, in fact I understood what was gonna happen after watching it for 10 minutes,. Hell yeah, am I not clever, kid. On the other hand, if your intelectual lineage doesn't reach further than the three or four sometimes decent American film makers, it doesn't mean that the rest of the world uses their leisure time in the same crappy way.

  • @Congresista

You knew what was going to happen after 10 minutes, eh.......yeah, you keep telling yourself that, pitiful. This convo is over

  • @southrules ok, maybe not 10 minutes. Here is the real story: I felt asleep after a while and when I woke up just before Di Caprio starts talking to the woman in the cave, I told myself while wiping the cold out my eye: "this is delusional. This dude is nuts and the weird shit ain't happening." You might give me no credit, but this is how it went, the movie is just to similar to other cheap thrillers of the kind.

  • Well the movie was adapted from the novel, so if you're complaining about the plot, blame Dennis Lehane. I even think Lehane said the book was meant to be a homage to 'B movies' and pulp. But It's also a commentary on the controversy of mental asylums during that time period, and of course the psychological aspects of Leo's character.

In any case, this was a great adaption. Pretty much everything from the acting performances, direction, and visuals were better than any cheap thriller I've seen.

  • This movie is like an amazing girlfriend. Takes you on the most exhilarating phenomenal journey of your entire life and ends up totally fucking with your mind leaving you trying to replay things over and over again, 6/5 fucking brilliant and I recommend you watch.

  • @ToksPianoTube lmao great analogy!!!

  • @ToksPianoTube brilliantly stated. Exactly how I felt.

  • @ToksPianoTube well said :)

  • I lost sleep over this movie. it was great.

  • shutter island and inception were great. leo is on a role. The only thing that is bad is that Shutter Island came out at the very start of the year so leo will probably not get Best Actor because those movies are usually forgotten about when it is time to vote for the oscars.

  • lol both hi´s new movies this year got a twist!

  • This is my favorite movie ever.

  • shutter island is a twisted thriller that keeps you guessing like hell!!!!!!!

  • this movie is awesome and the ending gets your brain twisted in thoughts!!!!!!!

  • this has one of the best endings ever! u gotta watch itt

  • @AMJABAS Yea the ending was great. But wait til you watch Inception.... the ending will have you sleepless for days!!!

  • @AMJABAS .....until u see the inception ending...

  • @rahman91o there everyone can decide the ending..i got my opinion maybe you have other..

  • This was a mindfuck and Inception seems kinda complicated too

  • This movie was AMAZING!!!

At the end though, I think he was completely sane and decided to let the people take his life. He would rather die as Teddy than live as what he truly is.

And when his delusions of wife keep popping up and saying " the lighthouse will be the end of you" she was referring to the character that he made himself become. If he went to the lighthouse, he would become sane again.

  • @20bill3 i believed he was nuts except one thing- the tie. If he really was imagining all that, how did he get ahold of that tie and blow up the car with it? Or was all that given to him beforehand.

  • Between Titanic, Catch me if you can and this moview, Leo is one of the greatest actors of my generation. I respect that like Depp, he doesn't by into the pretty boy bullshit.

  • Guys, Answer Me This Please.

I Just Watched It And WoW,

But At The End, Is What They Told Him The Truth, Or Were They Controlling His Mind?,

If You Know The Answer, Then Tell Me How You Know.

I Really Want To Understand It, =)

  • @Weabe112 acowa4104 talks about the ending and I understould the ending as Leo's character regressing. I was waiting for him to catch the evil people in the lighthouse but once it was clearly all in his mind, I knew he was another patient making things up to cope with his life's tragedy. The fact that Leo's character didn't run away lead me to believe that he knew he was in denial about what happened but it was comfortable to cling to a lie. He allows the labotomy to finally end the nightmare.

  • @clipsryan - =)

    WoW, Okay.

    Thankyou Very Much.

And So Was I Waiting For Him To Catch Them In The Lighthouse,

And When They Kept Saying There's 67 Patients, I Kept Saying Leo Was The 67th.

It Is Litrally A Mind Blagg Don't You Think. .

    But Once Again Thankyou. =)

  • @Weabe112 No problem. Perfect Strangers, The 6th Day and Fight Club are good psychological mind fucks. Maybe not the 6th so much but the others were alittle mind twisting.

  • Leo NEVER disappoints me.. just as i expected this is really a great movie.. until i lay down to sleep i'm still thinking about this movie.. mind boggling especially the talk he had on the cave just over the cliffs..

  • i just seen this movie and it really gets your mind thinking

  • shutter island REALLY tapped into all of my emotions...my god. I wanted to freaking KILL that woman for drowning her kids....ugh its sad that people actually do those things in real life.

  • Comment removed

  • It's a very accurate discription of what it's like to loose your grip on reality & go insane...

the suddenly realizing your insane & everything you knew or thought was a delusion, all the time trying to sort out how to think,feel...

His mistake was not listening to the woman at the begining who said "shhh", If he was IronicallyVague they wouldn't have cut up his brain.

  • @IronicallyVague

Time to loose my tobacco filled keyboard

  • Don't be fooled by the ending. Look for a sequel when DiCaprio finally uncovers what's really going on at Shutter Island.

  • @bjlyon615 that wont happen because shutter island was based on a book and theres no sequel to that book

  • @jtownhoops30

Thats never stopped hollywood before, they don't need a plot, script or even talent to make a sequel, however I do agree there won't be anouther film...

The man had his brain chopped up

  • I'm really hoping that Kingsley is at the very least NOMINATED for an Oscar in the Best Supporting Actor category for Dr. Cawley.

  • this movie was amazing! the ending.. i mean.. WOW!

  • This film blew my mind! I've never seen a movie with more plot twists. Took me a while to somewhat understand what was going on.

  • IF YOU HAVENT SEEN THIS, DONT READ THE COMMENTS!! All caps creates urgency :) great movie. What a mindfuck

  • @Lobostar30 thanks for the heads-up

  • This movie is so crazy! But it's an awesome movie nonetheless.

  • I think he is sane at the end.

When he says 'die a good man or live as a monster' he is saying he would rather die then live with the fact that he did all those things (trying to avoid spoilers lol)

Thus he gets up and walks away with the orderlies. He doesn't want to leave and live as a monster.

  • @xxjoexboixx hmm i think that he ment he's rather die as the imagenary charachter he made up, Teddy, who was a good man, then to live as who he really is, the man who murdered his wife. He didnt wanna let go of his fantasy world. So if he were to be killed, he would die as Teddy. im not sure if that's what you mean as well xD but none the less i thought he was actually insane. xD

  • @swtfairy01 ya thats what i meant XP

  • haha i dont get it whats it about?!?!?! is he really crazy or they want him to think he is?

  • omg i luv this movie!

    the ending is amazing!!!

  • Leonardo DiCaprio is a babe.

  • this movie was so confushin can someone explain it to me? plz :)

  • i lov this freaking movie it maks me try to figure it out on my own XD he got old but still has his good looks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • DiCaprio is a fucking amazing actor now when youre comparing him with himself 15 years ago

  • Best movie ive seen in a while. A twist you never see coming! But once you know the plot the whole movie makes total since! Ahh Lenardo is such a good actor and hes still cute after all these years(:

  • so what the fuck happens at the end after he stands up and walks?? thus it goes to the brain sirgery???

  • @CristinaVidalful fuck off

  • I love you.

  • fail movie!

  • one of the BEST movies i've seen ever, by the end of it i've realized that i've experienced what insanity/sanity is, in the mind of an insane man. it's like i've been living in his mind and hearing his thoughts. Dicaprio hit another level here IMO. i felt every emotion expressed in the movie intensely..all actors were AMAZING!

  • if you see other really psychological thriller films, the movie doesn't seem all that original. it kinda has elements from memento cuz of the ending, little bit of fight club (the delusions/ hallucinations), and 12 monkeys.(mental institution). but dicaprio's really good at acting.

  • this movie rules

    leo is cutie:D

  • Great movie! certainly the best I've seen in a long time, and deff not the normal bullshit CG dominated summer blockbuster that isn't even worth renting. Sure it has CG in it, but it's done subtly (as it should). I gotta admit i saw the "twist" ending coming from nearly the start though.

  • great movie

  • If you've guys seen American Psycho, its almost the same thing, nothing original but I must admit they should make more psycho trillers like these

  • hoolllly SNAP i wanna see it
