@ yassine 1797, Marcel cerdan was born in algeria, but he was french because his parents were, and at this time Algeria was a French colony, and he doesn't raised in Algeria, but in marocco in Casablanca, his surname was " le bombardier marocain", just check Wikipedia out, that tell marcel cerdan is a French guy
he is any thing but french man he is more like algerian, he was born and broat up in algeria.marcel cerdan proud to be an algerian fighter he said it in many ocasions no idea why the coments on him regarded as a french fighter typical english coments.
@yassine1797 Cerdan was a pied-noir (just like Albert Camus and Yves Saint Laurent for example), look it up. 100% ethnic french, no algerian ancestry whatsoever.
snako05 thinks jake beat the sugarman 3 out of six with robinson maybe in the tank on one of them? I dunno snako..that is out of context with robinsons character and why should he take a dive? money? I kind of doubt it.. marcel was a rough guy for sure and it truly is a toss up on him vs jake the go around and robinson a very smooth boxer/puncher. again, check out charley burley for a take on a serious contender that never got a shot !! good hearing from you snako...
snako08 wrote me and feels jake and marcel would have been #1 and 2 with robinson behind? hard to call that one for sure. sugar ray was the best "welterweight" in history for sure and pound for pound overall. however, as a middleweight there are several that I feel would have handled him. on jake over sugar ray? six fights five wins for the sugar man.. so, I do not know if I totally agree with snako on jake over robinson. cerdan? fate dealt a short hand and we can only guess.... a true great
@genovegas7 id say fight 3 and 6 were pretty much Lamotta wins. Sugar Ray Robinson was surprized by hi win in fight 3 and thought Lamotta was the real winner while fight 6 Lamotta was winning in my opinion by a decent bit and threw the fight to Robinson while fight 4 was a Robinson win. Fights 1 ad 5 id have to check
Nice to see the posters here giving Cerdan his due. The Algerian was a terrific fighter. He beat Zale easily here and likely would've beaten LaMotta in the rematch with two good hands. Tragic outcome, God rest his soul.
Mr Tennessee aske me, on Cerdan vs Robinson? great duel for sure. basilio not the banger cerdan was took robinson 15rds twice !! a great body puncher which troubled robinson could for sure have caused the sugar man an early sleepfilled evening. heres a middle robinson wanted no part of as did anyone else. charley burley was a real terror ..check him out. also, modern day carlos monzon could have given him a real go..
@MrTennesseeVols Great question and one of my favorite fantasy match-ups. Robinson, the greatest boxer-puncher ever. I've always coined Cerdan as "the thinking man's brawler". Cerdan was a brawler-boxer. He had phenomenal skills, quik explosive bursts, threw in combinations, great timing and defense. There's not a doubt in my mind that Cerdan gets 1 out of 3 against Robinson.
once more I need to stand corrected..just checked the facts on the graziano age thing.. zale was 33 for the triology.. he fought cerdan AFTER graziano.. also, ring magazine had zale rated among the top 100 bangers of all time.
I stand corrected by choice 264 and thank you for enlightening me.. for sure cerdan was a terrific fighter, however the age I was referring to with zale at 35 is when he fought "graziano".. the jury is out for sure on whether cerdan was a better fighter than zale, as zale was an outstanding bodypuncher as was cerdan and that being said it is a definite tossup. I commend you for your expertise however and enjoyed your critique
@genovegas7 One of the posters here,MrTennesseeVols, posed a great question, who do you think wouldve won between Cerdan and Robinson at middleweight? I've always felt that had Cerdan lived to fight the rematch with LaMotta he wins it, and wins the rubber match. I think he then would've fought Robinson in '51 and it wouldve gone down as one of the all-time great trilogy's with Cerdan taking 1 out of 3. Of course, this is my imagination at work. What do you think? Who wins?
while both were sensational middleweights, keep in mind tony zale lost four years in WW II before coming back to fight graziano that for sure took alot out of him being 35 yrs old at the time. cerdan was truly a sensational fighter as well and for sure not to take away, but he did not fight zale at his prime..
@genovegas7 Zale was 35. Cerdan was 32. Both turned pro around the same time. Cerdan served in WW2 as well. Cerdan was in his prime as a welterweight. Zale never looked better than he did his fight proir to Cerdan, against Graziano. Zale had fought 87 total fights. Cerdan had fought 116! I think it's safe to say that Cerdan was not at his peak either. Cerdan was just a better fighter than the great Zale. That's all. Zale would have never beaten Cerdan---prime or otherwise.
Damn, Cerdan just exposed that lazy left jab of Zale's all...night...long. Do ya think that his corner may have said," Ya gotta get that left hand back Tony! Don't leave it out there for this gut aint no Graziano! This guy will make you pay!" or do you think it was a case of ya cant teach an old dog new tricks? Regardless, Cerdan made him pay for every conceivable mistake i can detect from Zale in this fight. Cerdan must've had one helluva boxing I.Q.
Tony Zale after his loss later became light heavyweight and lost a crack at the world title to the world light heavyweight champion Billy Conn. Jason Louis-Fernand.
Nobody fights like this anymore. There seem to be no more pressure fighters who just go for it non-stop, and aren't afraid of getting hit, and when they do get hit, can take it.
@alsgnor "Marcel Cerdan, as you all told, was French, of Algerian origins.
" No dude you are wrong. Cerdan wasn't french of algerian origins but PIED NOIR= French of FRENCH origins born in French algeria of French metropolitan fathers; hence the white skin, catholic name instead of bronzed skin muslim name he would have if he was of algerian origins.
@shire2005 All these excuses about Zale being old and WW2 and the 3 fights with Rocky taking it out of him are all bullshit excuses. Why does every1 always feel the need to make excuses when a great fighter or any fighter for that matter loses? Cant a fighter just simply lose because he wasnt the better man that night? Cant he just lose because NOTHING was wrong with him OTHER THAN the MAN IN FRONT OF HIM??? Yes, i believe he can. (cont.)
@TheChoice264 (cont.) Cerdan was roughly the same age as Zale. Cerdan turned pro the same year as Zale. Cerdan had more fights than Zale( many). Cerdan served in WW2 as well during his, "prime" years. Was it Cerdans fault that he struggled with a brawler like Rocky. Also, Zale looked very good and had no trouble AT ALL with Rocky in the last fight. His fight before Cerdan he never looked better. So, stop with all the lame excuses everybody! He lost to a better fighter. PERIOD.
Yeah, but Cerdan was 33 at the time of this fight and had over 100 fights.Zale was 34. I guess you are right though, every fighter has their own clock.
@michelst14 I am glad to hear he is still popular, but I saw a place in Paris dedicated to him and it would be better if they didn't give him any place, it is a very ugly place and I find it a little disrespectful :-(
the trilogy with Rocky graziano took a lot out of Zale. Fought him at the right time

Let's make a little bit of order:

Zale had an unusual career because prior to WW2 in what should have been his prime years he was just an average middleweight with many losses.
After the war when he was over 30 was when he had all his great fights and became champ.
