It's not fake. Just gay. Since jets are slower than v-drives jet boat owners think they can make up for being slow be having water shoot in the air to look "cool". LOL!
Have you ever driven big block jets like these? They are fun as hell, maybe not as fast as V-drives but lots of fun. Good video, but I wish there was no music....

As far as i'm aware after 20 years in the boat building industry, jet type propolsion looses some hp throught the actual jet unit(approx. 5-10%) as opposed to a prop and shaft set up.
Also, jet units stir up a lot more sand when used in shallow water and have a tendancy to clog up water cooling inlets and overheat engines.
In my opinion the jet unit is great for high speed turning and a lot safer for swimmers. Aside from that give me a prop any day.
