You know, I think Ken answered that as a joke intentionally., If you follow him on Twitter, you'll know he can have a naughty streak in his sense of humor.
A whore accepts money for sex. How is that the same as "Immoral pleasure seeker"? Choose slut (female rake?) or whore, one can't be both (maybe in her free time a whore could be a slut). Although I would have probably come up with the same (wrong) answer. But ho doesn't have a different definition than whore, so yeah. Wrong answer.
Nor am I a "grammar Nazi." I have not concerned myself with sentence structure or syntax. Word definitions are not "grammar." Ken got it wrong. Hilarious moment. He went on to clean, so to speak, everyone's clock, as a Jeopardy champion -- just not at this moment.
@AegisNova I understand learning english, but to be fair - Nobody uses rake to classify someone as an immoral pleasure seeker anymore. It's basically a dead association. Bloody grammar nazi.
@MidnightOutlaw Just because no one uses the definition in the vernacular, anymore, doesn't invalidate the definition. A hoe is a garden implement, or tool...but all across the Internet, at the beginning of the 21st century, "hoe" is used as a derivative of "whore." It's not correct. Neither can I find a definition of "whore" which involves seeking pleasure. If I was wrong about this, Alex and the judges would have awarded the question to Ken.
If any of you would have bothered to pay attention in English class, you wouldn't be so stumped, here. Hoe = garden tool. "Ho" = derivative of whore. Rake = garden tool or a dissolute or profligate person, especially a man who is licentious; roué. Read a book, people.
yeah, I stand by the "hoe is a better answer" - my original reason? rake is not (at least currently) a term for an immoral pleasure seeker, so if it's old fashioned, then since when does Jeopardy not say "old-fashioned term"? my new reason after thinking it through more? Hoes are used in the garden, rakes are used in the yard...therefore, a hoe is a long-handled gardening tool, and a rake is a long-handled yard or lawn tool...Jeopardy = MAJOR FAIL on this one...
A rake is an old fashioned term, found in a lot of old bodice ripper stories when a mother or girl friend warns the innocent young thing not to ake up with the immoral pleasure seeker. "He's just a rake."
So no, he's not technically correct. The two words are pronounced the same but have different meanings. But that's okay, 'cause he's freaking hilarious :D
@truboricua That's because it's not a tern used to describe a loose woman. It's synonymous with words like "libertine" and "profligate", usually used to describe men with a lot of money who squander it on (immoral) pleasures. It definitely fits with the clue a lot more than "hoe" does, although Ken's answer was still funny because it could work too.
@jeffgrever "a rake is an immoral pleasure seeker? Hoe is a WAY more accurate answer...lame." Actually it is not, they were looking for a pleasure seeker, not a pleasure giver.
I thought, "hoe" but then discounted it because a prostitute wouldn't be seeking sexual favors but giving them. It was Alex's mind that was off kilter. I think he teases Ken a lot because Ken's Mormon and they are supposed to be so stict about their beliefs. I was. Some are and some are Jack Mormon's. Belong to the church but don't live it. But I do think Alex should have backed off. Just was rude. You don't tease people about their religion.
@cheddercheese99 That's because it's a word used in the 1700's. Around then anyway. I'd bet you're not THAT old are you? lol I've never thought of a rake being defined like that but it makes sense. A little iffy. A rake could be a gambler, a son who just lives for his own pleasures, etc. My opinion but I'm going on some of the books I've read when someone calls a man a rake. This almost wasn't fair. No one uses that term today.
@leviathan85 What are you talking about? They don't equal each other but neither does rake. The word hoe can mean the definitions given. That answer rake was bs and just politically correct. That other guy knew he probably would've said hoe himself but had the time to rethink of a different answer. That lady probably didn't buzz in cause she was thinking hoe too. Alex probably knew it was hoe too but just had to try to make the guy feel bad.
@WillGotti Rake has two different meanings. Hoe does not mean both definitions given because it's not the same word as 'ho'. This isn't rocket science.
@karlakor I mean, maybe it wasn't the answer they wanted, but it makes perfect sense. Anyways, getting to say that on tv would've made losing the points worth it. (:
He knew the answer was wrong but he wanted to say it anyway. Look at the scores he could afford a wrong answer. Also look at his face right after he said it, he was smiling because he knew what he said.
@birdman5050 OK, correction: Yo daddy's a rake. Rake never referred to Gays.
Wikipedia:
A rake, short for rakehell, is a historic term applied to a man who is habituated to immoral conduct, frequently a heartless womanizer. Often a rake was a man who wasted his (usually inherited) fortune on gambling, wine, women and song.
The rake was also frequently a man who seduced a young woman and impregnated her before leaving, often to her social or financial ruin
Ummm...I ABSOLUTELY would have said "Hoe" as well! WTF???? The ONLY answer for that question is HOE! Rake?? F-that shit! I call SHENANIGANS on Jeopardy!!! they WANTED someone to say Hoe!!! The question TOTALLY BEGGED for the answer of "Hoe!" it would be like saying "Something that can be hairy and smelly that ends in "UNT" and then answering with the C-word and having Alex say "The word was AUNT you FREAK!"
He had enough money won to test the waters as a stand up comedian. Earlier he did his impression of Sean Connery and remarked "We meet again Trebek."
@Cheeso33 Morals differs between people. Morals are principles set from familys and friends. By saying something is immoral, it's simply stating that we are breaking our moral principles. We cannot say what is "moral" and what is not. For example : i could say if killing was immoral. You probably agree. I could then say if killing someone immoral if you did it to protect your self or your family. That is a question only that person can answer. So is prostitution imomoral? depends on you.
You know, I think Ken answered that as a joke intentionally., If you follow him on Twitter, you'll know he can have a naughty streak in his sense of humor.

So, more like a scoundrel than a Fag.
