I think as an Asperger syndrome person that Issues of people on the spectrum is a civil rights issue the celebration and embracement of autistic culture (and that of Asperger syndrome people). in a freely changing society and that caters for those on the spectrum. Curing is the wrong way to go. I say as a person who has Asperger syndrome myself.
The most fundamental problem of these groups is that they view autism from a non-autistic's perspective. The focus of the discussion is always, ALWAYS on the parents and families of autistic people. Autistic I was born, autistic I'll die. Being an Aspie is not an affliction, it's WHO I AM!!
If it's possible to find a cure for autism, keep it in the cupboard until the autistic comes of age and is able to make an informed decision for him or her self. Forcing a cure upon an autistic child is tantamount to forcing your son to undergo a sex-change operation because you wanted a daughter. Cure...for parents only. If you can't accept your child for who they are, why did you have kids at all?
I am not saying that children & people with Autism should not be cured, helped or improved. I just don't believe that there is some mythical cure right now, so lets all put the money into immediate support 24/7 for families and individuals?
Tell me, if the fabled research of the future proves you wrong and that people wer born with it and are stuck with the Autism condition, what then?
People who live with autism simply need to be allowed to have their lives their way. We can do what anyone else can, we just have to do it our own way and society is good at blocking those attempts by telling us we're 'faulty'. That's what makes some autistics want a cure. Not for their condition but to stop society beating them down all the time. We know and understand a lot more than anyone realises we do. It hurts.
I can't believe there are still people who don't know autism is genetic O.o
Cure Autism Now is no charity but a Hitler worshipping Neo Nazi Organisation who would see us all gassed in death camps and the public would do the Nazi salute and scream out sieg heil.
In that sense, no, it is not. However, they do support pre-natal testing for Autism, and support aborting Autistic babies. They want to figure out how they can do that through genetic research, and find that one gene that makes people Autistc. :(
Anyone who tells you they a cured Autistic child, laugh at them. They're either stupid or in denial, sometimes both.

Odd how the "We are special because we have autism" people are interested in spreading "attacks" against others. I don't see this working in reverse. It seems to be a one way street I have noticed.
There are some Autistic adults involvd with CAN or do you vilify everyone who does not agree with you 100%?
They'll never find a gene, because the foundation of autism as a diagnosis is derived from behavioural science, not medical. It would be the same as finding a cure for a stroke victim after they've had the stroke, thinking that "gene" therapy would somehow restore the brain to it's unchanged form before. Yes, it's a eugenics program. No question about that.
its odd that all people with autism need is love and care and taking away there autism tells them that there parents dont care about there kids autism sint that bad all autism people need is luv and support i should know this cause i got autism

If you don't want to find a cure and stay inside your shells, so be it. I don't want my son to be on social programs the rest of his life or in institutions. Recovering him from his symptoms and healing his body, he will be able to live on his own, marry if he choses, have and education and a prosperous job. He will not be a bum on the streets wanting a handout or asking organizations to support him. It WOULD be great if CAN would donate funds for families in therapy such as ABA and RDI though!
A lot of people in this thread act just like the people who think being deaf is better. The truth is, it's not a personality trait, something is dysfunctional in the body. If SOME of those people, and those who love them want to help research the matter, you guys should be all for it. it could only show the truth.
If you don't want a cure for yourself, that's fine, it's a free country, but it's only fair if you also respect OTHERS rights to research autism, and find a cure, and help those who DO want the help.
you can't cure autism, it's not a disease. it's like saying you can cure a black person of their blackness but even more impossible. because autism is a part of our personality. it lies in our very core.
If you don't know what causes autism, you can't know if it's curable or not. If not curable, preventable. This is why we need AUTISM RESEARCH because we don't know what causes it. It's our right to spend our money as we see fit, into researching something WE are interested in.
they want a cure because they dont understand us, and cant understand how many of us are just as, or smarter than them. they fear what they dont understand.
The problem with this is some of the most important and succesful people in the world were autistic. I am a strong beleiver in preventing any burden on society, but what percentage of autistic people are? Would it be worth it?
If private people want to donate money so that people aren't suffering from abnormal compulsive behavior that is often a disability, as well as confidence killing, how is it not worth it for people to donate their spare money?
Tick tock, and those 'cured kiddies' become adults, like me.
Surprise! Jobs, relationships, but the true nature is Autistic. Yes, they are called HIGH FUNCTIONERS. I know, my Fioncee and I are such people. We know more, too. With amazing qualifications, good looks (I can prove this in some cases) and even children.
Us too...I was poo-pooed by our pediatrician for almost two years. She also refused referrals (HMO) for us to see if there was something physical (ref. to an ENT, for ex.). "Nothing's wrong." C still wasn't speaking at age four...hmmmmmmmm. Alarmist my flarkin' *ss. My friend went through something similar with her AS son. Yes, the claim that there is overdiagnosis is, in my experience, rather opposite to the truth.
p.s. That's not to say I'm cheering on CAN--seeing that tax statement, I'm thinking a bit less of them now. I was just commenting on what autismtookmickie was saying.
Good work. Neurotypical parents trying to get what they want, and even going as far as to redefining language and meaning of terms to get it. My Autistic partner and I are marrying in December. We are both on the spectrum. Cure That!
The reason a diagnosis usually takes longer to be correctly identified is because Autism shares similar characteristics of other neurological or mental conditions such as ADHD (I was misdiagnosed with ADHD before being diagnosed with Autism at the age of 3, then Asperger's at the age of 7), Schizophrenia, and other conditions of the like.
It Autistic-Like Symptoms show up due to heavy metal poisoning, it's not Autism to begin with.
And BTW, this isn't an epidemic. The reason why there is an alarmingly high amount of Autism diagnoses is that we know more about Autism than we ever have and now more and more misdiagnoses are being corrected.
The idea of curing autism to me is so bizarre. I was just born with a unique brain - the only time I feel 'disabiled' is when NTs remind me how different I am and try to make me feel like a freak for it.
They should take those millions of dollars and spend it on school programs to end bullying; services for adults who need assistance; and proper means of helping auties adapt to a world not made for them.
Great video, they need to realize what it really is before trying to cure it, they need to listen to people who has it and even those who has had it for 20+ years and has been very successful and understands it is related to the nervous system and anxiety and gut intake.
Um, I was just wondering where you got your info from?? Do you understand the term "eugenics"? It is a philosophical term that states the study of heredity improvement of the human race by controlled selective breeding (got that from the dictionary)! It says nothing about race specifically!

Let me just explain how dead wrong it is to acuse us anti-cure auties of wishing to be on our shells.
We are not hiding under a rock to wait for day of death, ok.
A great deal of us auties have managed to accomplish a lot of stuff and I could go on about the stuff i've managed to do.
