Hey. Do anyoneknow of anyone being blinded by a laser. A recorded actual case and not "I heard of someone who heard of someone"?

I know some people have had sore eyes and temporarily reduced sight but I haven't heard of anyone being blinded? When the light strikes the eye everone blinks, that short energy burst shouldn't do any harm.

I'm pretty sure he knew what I was up to but he probably didn't perceive me as a threat. I definitely was expecting to be questioned when I went up there but thankfully I never was. :-)

Do you realize that at one full watt, if it is a well cullimated beam (which they will be if they are high enough quality to be an expencive high powered laser like this is) will be enough to not only damage your night vision, but rather actually blind the eye it hits, and not just temoporarily but PERMINENTLY, and at that power such effect will be possible at a range of MILES! At that distance the power of the beam poses essentially no risk to folks particularly given that it was never kept in a stationary position. You might want to educate yourself about lasers and how their power drops off over distance. When you do there will be less chance of your commentary coming across a bit foolish.

Not to mention at 700 meters the air in between point a and point b would scatter some of the laser regardless. There is no way the laser could have been the same strength at that distance, only if there was no matter which is impossible.

Let`s make a simple calculation. With the usual laser divergence of 1,5 rad , the diameter is ~1,2 M @800m distance. This would make a lighted surface of about 1,2m2.

Hence power density at target is 1000mW / 1,2m2 = 0,8 mW / mm2. That is comparable to a conventional pocker laser pointer with 1 mW power and random exposure to the beam should not harm :)

Those people came over and talked to my friend as I coordinated with her to record this. They were telling her to tell me to not stop shining the beam!
