This is kind of the concept my cousin used to learn the drums. He took parts of his kit away from the rest and focused on those pieces. He started with the cymbals, just focusing on the different sounds he could make with all of them. The he took the snare and messed around with that, then did the same with the toms.
After he messed with the bass drum he put it all back together and tried to combine everything he learned about each individual part.. And now hes better than I could ever be :|
Everytime I close my hi-hat [say when I'm using left foot independence], it gives off this kind of weird noise, like a continuation of the ring from the two hats hitting together. I've noticed that the two hats aren't perfectly horizontally level like yours and most others, so could this be the cause of the problem? I don't want a new hat as the one I have is great, and plus I don't have the funds =D An answer from anyone would be appreciated. Thanks and keep posting these great videos!
for all drummers out there who have either lost a limb, or two, or three...and/or have become otherwise unable to use foot pedals...I am currently developing hardware to enable you to play again...just as good, or better, than u played before your accident. I am a T12 level paraplegic from a car accident in 1992. I play a fully acoustic kit. videos will come later as the inventions become protected under patent laws, but you'll be able to drum with NO pedals what so ever for kick/hihats.
I wanna see some video responses to this. Cause i bet everybody has a bunch of different ways and beats to play on them. Like i have a beat or two that he never even got close to that sound way sick.
The hihat is like one of the most important parts on the drumset. Its really good to analyze it 4 itself...This challenge will be in my practice repertoar from now on.
Thanks!
P.S: My left hand has been damaged (Mainly around the thumb area) because ive played so much lately.. So i guess im gripping it to hard? But how do you do then, If you really want to smack the snare drum hard without hurting the thumb and wrist?
You gotta grip the stick more loosely. Loosen up. Make the stick do all the work. Not your thumb. If you want to hit it hard then you should whip the stick from your wrist. your thumb should only have enough tension so it doesnt fly around. Also dont try so hard
Randy is just amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's exactly the stuff I like to do, I still don't have a kit but I got a crash that I'm hammering and that's the only thing I've got to play. Its also cool to use different parts of the Stick. try but, neck and tip on the bell for example, realy cool stuff!!!
Great vid. The only time you opened the hi hat was at the end of rudiments and mostly on down beats. What about opening the hi hat on accents of the rudiments and the permutations of those rudiments? I think some viewers would like to see that.
Good advice. It's nice to isolate the parts of the kit and just work on them or set up the kit the opposite way round to how you play it depending on whether you are left or right-handed.
my drummer recently left the band and ive been thinking about taking up drums and doing some pre- recording things so we dont have to stop shows all together for too long and your lessons have really helped out
when playing my hi-hat half open with the 2 cymbals barely touching (i.e. during a lengthy rock song) my left foot starts feeling fatigued from holding that position. is there something im doing wrong technique wise?
Wow! The hi hat was the part of the drum set i hated the most. Now it s one of my favourites i can do a lot of cool stuff with it.
And by the way, i want to buy a new drum kit and i was wondering if it s better to buy two bass drums and a single pedal for each one or if its better to buy just one bass drum and a double pedal. Please advise.
get one bass drum and a double pedal bro, theres very rarely any time you will have a stage for both bass drums.. also it looks wanky and wastes space. Pedals do the exact same thing..
not only does a double pedal save space it also saves money on buying new heads for 2 bass drums.however, you may want to consider a 2leg hihat stand for better placement with the extra pedal.
hi van i was wondering how often do u crack your cymbals because ive seen that u use z custom crashes and i am thinking of getting 1 and do u have any tips on preserving cymbals so they last a long time because recently i cracked my oriental china
as always randy, a great video, the content of which is awesome, and has taught me something yet again, but i've also got a tip for you too! stay off the SUGAR man, its eating your brain lol!!
Rather than spend a bunch of time staring @ a list of videos, buy Randy's DVD, a drum pad and a large printed copy of the 40 essential rudiments. I guarantee results. Why? I have been drumming for 37 years. Randy's DVD is the first piece of material that I have come across that focuses on building a foundation with control and having a good attitude before going into to your studio. He makes it fun and it's very practical. Commit to his suggestions and stay with it!
As always Thanks Randy. I just wanted to tell you about a product called
Quiet rock, its a sound proof sheetrock product,
thought it food for thought for your new room, P.S. this aint spam, i have no affiliation with this company. Now A ? ,at 2:46 how do you play 1/4 notes on the hats, and then throw in 1/8th on the kick, I always end up tagging along on the hats with the 1/8ths, if this makes sense. Also could you do a segment that clearly defines Syncopation.
Often, me and my drum teacher wouldn't play the kit at all in the lesson and just sit near a snare and he'd explain to me the way he approached drums, by actual emotion rather than by notes. I liked playing on the snare alone so I took out of my kit and played it by itself, and when I understood how fun it was, I did the same with all my instruments: the hi-hat, the ride, the floor tom, my splash cymbals, a cowbell and just about every type of percussion I could find, and it's taught me a lot.
i have done this for a bit before, but man is it hard. JUST to dedicate time to thhe hats, is tough stuff. good challenge, might consider giving it ago again and hopefully do better lol
From my experience 90% of hi-hat stands are essentially the same. Anything will work, if you want to go spend $200+ on one, you'll end up with something a lot more precise and smooth.
The difference between cheap and expensive hat stands is a lot less than the difference between cheap and expensive kick pedals.

Exactly what I thaught when I really started getting good. I think everyone should look at every part of their kit. Make different relationships with the different bits. When you really get to know and love a part of your kit, I call it the Jembe affect. Do an african drum cirle or course or something and you'll know what I mean. Great vid!!

Seanicusladz 2 years ago
the slave pedal (left pedal if you're a rightie) normally has a little amount of lag because of the pipe thingy that connects it to the right pedal.
so in other words, double pedals are a little laggy, but it's hardly noticeable.
Volentry 2 years ago 2
but when you push the pedal sown that pipe thingy moves.. there really isnt any lag bro hahaha..
