  • Me likes his blues.

  • Too bad we don't have videos of this or many others Dave did, but maybe not, since when all we have is the audio, we use more of our imaginations to see what we're hearing ... When the Mets won their first Series in 1969 and partying made DVR late and tipsy for a show at the Second Fret in Philly, we almost gave up after an hour plus of waiting, but were rewarded by a long, rollicking set, which ended with "Random Canyon" and a mike knocked over by a bellowing Dave.

  • This was the first Van Ronk album I ever had,

it kept me busy for hours and days

trying to figure out some of the guitar riffs...

I finally met him in person in the summer of 1980 at the Toronto Folk Festival. He was always a great inspiration to me!

  • Great version. I didn't know Dave Von Ronk did this tune. I do the Charlie Jordan version in my coffeehouse shows. I never heard anyone else cover it. Shoulda figured DVR did it; he's covered all the coolest shit. Thanx for posting this.

  • another great recording ... check out the Larry Johnson version from Fast And Funky... an exciting

    performance piece

  • Cool artist! I've never heard this guy before. Thanks for posting!

  • I just think he is the best.. He got me through Dorchester, Mass. in 1974-75.

  • Can someone post his song "When the Sacred Gin Mill closes"? I can't find a recording of it. Thank you. what a great singer.

  • It is a dropped D tuning. The picking is sort of Blind Blakes Chump Man Blues. Original Keep It Clean was by Charlie Jordan

  • This is in C tuning capoed on the 3rd fret. I was fortunate enough for Dave to show this to me back in 1997. The bass line is the thing. You walk it up the 6th sting which is tuned down to C. It's C G D G C E. "Wanna get frisky..."

  • I mean C G C G C E! Sorry.........

  • He really was pretty unique.

  • I love this version by Dave. The Raconteurs did a bang up job to, thanks to them for renewing a classic.

  • The Raconteurs covered this at Bonnaroo last summer. It was incredible.

  • Cool, id really like to see that!

  • dumbass

  • I saw him at a Toronto Club in the 80's and took along my "Songs for Aging Children' album to get autographed. He was really sweet and bought me a drink. I asked if he'd play "Work With Me Annie" and he did. Made my year!

    He sung this one, too!

    xxooa

  • Is this in dropped-D tuning? Anybody know where's there's a good tab of it?

  • Yes, I think it's played in drop D. In D actually.

Another way is to play it in C. And lover the E string even more. Then it's played in C, and you have to put the capo on third fret I think.

But probably D-tuning. But I can't believe he's able to play the base - pattern so well. That's what makes me think he must play it another way.

Have you figured something more out?

Feel free to check out my channel for more Ronk. :-)

    Håkon

  • Thanks for replying! About 25 years ago (when there was time to play for hours at a time), but couldn't recall if that was open D or dropped D. I suspect dropped D, because DVR didn't do much (anything?) in open D. You're right, the bass really rocks, solid! It's one great guitar piece--and then some rrreally good singing with and against the guitar.

  • What a song...this is great

  • Wonderful posts, keep up the great work, what a stylist!!!

  • Used to have this on vinyl, a looong time ago. Great number. One of my favorite guitar parts, too.

  • Hadn't heard this song in 40 years myself. He was a terrific musician!

  • Thanks for this post. I've wanted to hear him sing for ages. Gosh, I love youtube. And Bob D. was right about him.

  • I'am french. I like a lot. Something is passed in my head, body when I listen to him.

  • Superb, thanks for posting this!

  • love please post more....we need more Ronk

  • I meant love it....I wasnt callin u love, ha

  • You were just momentarily overwhelmed...

    quite understandable!!! Thank you Clothosx!

  • Excellent! Any more?

  • Busy lately, but I'll do my best.

  • Nice!

  • Great stuff men.
