@remalion - The ultrahigh pressure erosion process can cut most materials. Most likely it would be able to cut 1/2" glass. We do have a world class demonstration lab in Kent, Washington where we push the application boundaries every day. We would love to test cut some impenetrable glass if someone has an application they’d want tested and the material supplied.
@Musgle - Interesting suggestion! It is possible, but there are a lot of air gaps within the engine that would cause the jet to lose power and create a rough cut.
hi, will it be possible to tell me which track/ tune do u use in 0:40 like when the water is cutting the stuff and when flowman stands with the wind blowing :D thanks
@kmanmx - Considering the amount of pressure and the power of a waterjet, I would say the components last a while. Water pressurized up to 94,000 psi is forced through a jeweled orifice, which is either a diamond, ruby, or sapphire. Diamonds last much longer, up to 1,000 hours of operation, versus up to 100 hours for the ruby/sapphire. The carbide tubes where the water and abrasive mix after the orifice is called the mixing tube. These last around a 100 hours as well.
@krap101 - Waterjets cut through anything and everything – the slats across the table will eventually get cut. To increase their life they are moved around and rotated, but eventually they will need to be replaced. But, making them is easy because owners just cut new ones using their waterjet.
@krap101 - A waterjet is highly capable of cutting in full 3D. Flow waterjets offers 3, 5, 6, & 7 axis cutting systems and full robotic units for all 3D cutting applications. One characteristic of waterjet cutting is that the depth cannot be controlled – you must cut all the way through the material. The benefit of this characteristic is that waterjet will cut through anything.
Waterjets do not cut through materials, like metal; rather they erode away at metal in the same fashion as the water and rock eroded away to form the grand canyon.
With the help of abrasive (sand paper grit material) in the water, which travels at supersonic speeds, this erosion process happens very quickly through materials from rubber to hardened ceramics, glass and metal.
@CanWaterCutIt This might be a stupid question. If the jet quickly erodes a spot of material, where does the material go to? Does it flow away with the water?
The width of the stream can be as small as a human hair, so the amount of material being lost or eroded away is very minimal.
The material that IS eroded away flows with the stream into the tank of water that rests under the cutting table surface. Great question, keep them coming!
@CanWaterCutIt lol well technically thats what cutting is.. metal saws erode the material in the same way, by destroying the material a little bit at a time.
Excellent question! Flow table top surfaces are in fact made up of several thin vertically laid slats approx 4" thick that are bent into an "S" shape.
Below these slats sits a tank of water, as water is the only form to stop all the kinetic energy from the nozzle. The water sits close to 3 1/2 feet deep.
Any less than 3 feet, the power of the waterjet could reach the bottom of the tank and potential wear away a hole over time.
Flowman you gave the term "Slice" a whole new meaning!! I think Ms Gilmore could use a few lessons. How about showing us a 5 Pin split in bowling? Hope to meet you at the next trade show. DaveK
Can it cut thick glass? Say...impenetrable glass used on ceiling.
Probably it can since it can diamond, but just curious what thickness can it do.
Try 1/2" ;)

How do you keep the table from being "cut" or worn? Or is it like a spoilboard where it is replaced?
krap101 7 months ago

The one material that water isn't able to cut, along with any other machine tool, is Tempered Glass.
Tempered Glass is meant to shatter if impacted with any outside force.
Thanks for the excellent question, keep them coming!
