  • At times like this, I'm glad I'm in Belgium at the moment :D Quality Chocolate sprinkles (almost) every morning!

  • So funny to see this. I'm Dutch, but I have no idea what John tried to say when he was reading Dutch. And yes, Hackenslacken and bitterballs are the most delicious things on earth.

  • I stood there last saturday too! and then I did your happy dance too and my dad knew it was because of you. he watches you guys too XD

  • Ha, i have a box of those chocolate sprinkles in my pantry right now. YAY DUTCH HERITAGE.

  • I was eating bread with Hagelslag at the moment he said HACKENSLACKEN!

  • My dad was born and raised in Amsterdam, and so on the counter upstairs right not, although I can't spell it's actual name, resides the largest box of Dutch chocolate sprinkles I have ever laid eyes on.

  • I WANT TO GO HEEEERE.

  • You're so cute when you're screwing my native language!

im sorry but i had to make the joke

  • That was an hilarious attempt at speaking Dutch. HACKENSLACKCHEN?? Haha! God, I would have loved to have been there at the gathering so freaking much. Too bad I'm a few years too late.

  • hahahahaha... just wait till he discovers nutella.

  • BALLS!

  • o my god john is more hilarious than normal in this video

  • My dad went to boarding school in france, and they had that chocolate sprinkle bread but it was a sandwich.

  • SANNE SANNE!!! Sorry, I love booksandquills, and every time you post videos of you in the Netherlands, I look for her and Lidewij.

  • wow i speak dutch and only 5 minutes after the movie ended i realised that by "HACKENSLACKEN" he ment hagelsag xD

  • @JonasAtGuitar Oh I thought he meant hagelslag

  • @JonasAtGuitar Yes, me too. I really didn't realise what he ment by HACKENSLACKEN XD I thought: Do I know about that? XD And of course I do! I used to love hagelslag when I was still a kid.

  • very nice that you learn my language i live in netherland

niet veel engelse mensen leren nederands hahaha echt grappig

  • You don't have hagelslag in the US? Why not?

  • Next time you go to the Netherlands, you need to try the pannekoeken! So yummy!

  • Your publisher is Lemniscaat? Now I'm definitily going to read it. Used to reading English books in English, but will read it in dutch if you like.

  • im dutch

  • I was watching videos from when John went to Amsterdam in 2007, and he makes some of the same jokes and shows some of the same stuff. Like, one of the videos starts at that exact toy/machine thing in this video. Also the bitter balls, hehe.

  • That looks like fairy bread but with chocolate sprinkles!

Fairy bread is rainbow sprinkles. =]

  • haha i lived in amsterdam, since last month i live in canada(:

  • he hasn't even had kroketen and fruithagel. and pepernoten.

  • omg Booksandquills!!!!!!

  • Ha ha, you got a group of people to yell BALLS!

  • I'm sorry but your not playing the tiles right ;o

The dancing man we met only used 3 !! ;) Ahaa

  • What irritates me is that I lived in the Netherlands for the past 8 years, and only discovered Nerdfighteria around 2 weeks after John left from his most recent tour. I mean, he went to Koninginnedag, I went to the same Queen's Day parade in Amsterdam this year! Oh well

But I'm in the UK now and am going to a Nerdfighter gathering in 2 weeks, so it's all good, and I go back home to NL for the summer, so hopefully he'll do a European TFioS tour? :)

    I love NL <3

  • @HoliHallow

I hear ya. I have lived in The Netherlands for all my life and I only discovered about nerdfighteria and the fact he lived here long after he was gone. It's not easy being a fan.

  • Having some hagelslag while watching this, omnomnom.

  • Yum Hagelslag.

  • Hey John there are a lot of nerfighters in Trondeim Norway. You should go there.

  • Those chocolate sprinkles are called Kwatta :)

  • I spy a Lotte and a JB ;)

  • Really, when you said "Hackenschlacken" I had no idea what you meant. And then I saw the Hagelslag and it made much more sense. You should practise your dutch, mister Green. ;)

  • I love the jump that those people do. :)

  • Hagelslag!

  • It's so funny what non-Dutch people think of Hagelslag. The Spanish exchange students ate it without bread because they liked it so much -.- And I didn't even know bitterbalen were Dutch -.- And God i wish the 13-year me knew about this awesome gathering of awesome people made out of awesome though I probably would not be able to go there -.- and now I'm going to try and find paper towns somewhere so I can read it, in Dutch.

  • being British but living in the netherlands for quite some time, this made me laugh :)

I love this country and I love others appreciating it too!

  • Comic Sans uuueeerrrgggghhhh!

  • What I would give to meet both you John and Jordan Sonnenblick! *squee!*

  • It's so funny how Americans cannot pronounce the Dutch G. HACKENSLACKEN!

  • It's always fun to see a new perspective on the city you life in. :D

  • This is one of the best weeks ever. First I find out that the book I am reading (Looking for Alaska) is written by you and now I find out that you like the Netherlands and Amsterdam!! Yay! So proud to be Dutch today :)

  • @Hummol He's currently living there for 2 months! I was over visiting my sister 2 weeks ago, sad i didn't see him anywhere :P Looking for Alaska is good but i highly advise his book Paper Towns.

  • @Shellewell WOW!! We need arrange some kind of meeting!! I want to meet him!! :)

  • @Hummol He tries to hold Nerdfighter gatherings wherever he goes, i think you've already missed at least one amsterdam gathering! I'll check if theres any more planned

  • @Shellewell :O He is in Rotterdam the 20th!! And have to be at school at that time :(

  • I'm from Holland :D I can send you some Bitterballs if you ever want them.. Although I doubt they'll arrive in good fashion

  • I can't imagine life without hagelslag... they should be incorporated into the Universal Decleration of Human Rights

  • ...they mixed meat and ME, then fried it?!

XDDD I feel special because John said my name in a funny way. lol. P:

    Love you, John!

  • moushes!!!!!!!

  • It's weird because I was at that park this summer. That's so sick!

  • 2:24 JB DAZEN!!!!!!!

  • Haken schlachen (how I interpreted that delicious treat) means hook slaughter(In German).

That begs the question: If you eat slaughter, do you become it(you are what you eat), or do you DESTROY IT(stomach acid)?

    I prefer the latter^^

  • Hahahaha HACKENSCHLAGEN! You make it sound german and scary ^_^

    Hagelslag. See? Much softer ^_^

  • YOU DONT HAVE BITTERBALLEN en HAGELSLAG IN AMERICA??? I wouldnt be able to survive...

  • @liz110 He just gave me 2 more reasons why I don't want to go there:P

  • @kiek What do you mean?

  • theres just something fantastic about his eyes when he says hachenshlachen

  • LOL at those guys jump xD

  • Go Hachenslach! Or how you would spell it if you'd pronounce it like you made it up! If you do go back to Holland some time, don't forget to try our stroopwafels, or a frikandel, or rookworst, or...

  • @Ca15Sa12

    Boerenkool!

    Drop!

    Andijviestampot!

    Haagse Hopjes!

    Ehhh, and much more! ^_^

  • It's so strange/awesome.. I recognise a lot of nerdfighters in this video now :).

Weird how much things can change in.. is it less then one month?

    Hagelslag <3

  • Whoda thunk that 2 years, a month, and 8 days later, he would be living there. (Or at least, enjoying a prolonged visit).

  • Bitterballen. Hmmm, amazing. And I love how you pronounce "hagelslag: :P

  • I'm going to Amsterdam in about two months what should I eat while i'm there? Best wishes!

  • @sasuke1on1 Bitterballen. Drop (zoet EN zout). Stroopwafels. De rookworst van De Hema. Manneken Pis patat MET mayonaise. Kaassoufle. Frikandel. Just print that out and ask a friendly Dutch person where to find all that. They will know ^_^ Oh, and that's pretty much all junkfood :-p But goooooooood!
  • @KiwisHouseOfRock yumm can't wait! dank je wel (Kracht van Google Translate!)

  • hagelslag :D

  • I love how you call hagelslag a dutch delecatie, when it's just the stuff I have for breakfast every day.

  • @slashfilledmind YOU HAVE BREAD, BUTTER, AND CHOCOLATE SPRINKLES FOR BREAKFAST? lucky.

  • Whoo, I am Dutch, so now I feel in some way connected with John Green and his vlogs and that makes me feel weird, but awesome. x3

  • Lol at you quoting David.

'I feel funny... is this real life??'

  • My sister went to the Netherlands and got Hagelslag for me, mmm!

    =Nerdfighter Math

  • Did you ever smoked weed?

  • WHAT. IS. HAPPENING.

either something is wrong with my computer, or something is wrong with youtube.

at the end of this video, the time goes from 3:05 directly to 3:07

    WHERE IS 3:06 ?!?!?!

what has the world come to when i can no longer rely on number going in the right sequence?!

  • @twerdyyy The numbers are trying to be true to the Vlogbrothers, they can't always be right. :)

  • @twerdyyy WHAT!! it's still happening!! thats crazy

  • @twerdyyy All youtube videos do that; because YouTube is extra rebellious and can't hold the awesomeness.

  • @twerdyyy Every vlogbrothers vid on my computer always skips the second last second!

  • I AM A DUTCH NERDFIGHTER!!!!! :) hagelslag.

  • I used to live in Amsterdam before I moved to England. Best place ever. Hagelslag rules :)

  • FAILLL hagelslag

  • Hagelslag is exactly the same thing as my beloved Fairy Bread from when I was four and lived in Australia! Oh, how I wish I had some right now...

  • Hagelslag is yummy!

  • And btw John, the way you pronounce the made-up-word makes it youns like your saying "haken schlagen" (to zigzag) with a bad german accent ^^

  • You quoted DAVID? This child? I was so stunned to know whom you were talking about

    xD

  • Repeat 2:54 a lot of times!!

  • Hey when I was in Amsterdam I ate Hagelslag (almost) everyday!

  • Sooooo my friend bought me Paper Towns in Dutch and I'm just about finished with it. It. Was. Epic. Some of the translations just made my day. Oh, and every time I visit my family in Amsterdam I come back to Seattle with like a dozen packs of hagelslag. Breakfast of champions.

  • The first twenty seven seconds of this have made my day.

  • That would have been so awesome to be there.

  • Oh and what you really should try is sinterklaas treats... Sinterklaas is sort of the Dutch Santa who lives in spain..

I kinda explained how we celebrate it on my blog : vampymary.blogspot.nl ... just in case you like to know because I dont's want to type it all again.. it takes a while xD...

  • lol hackgenshlackgen xD but yes, i wouldnt know how to live my life without bitterballen.. and kroketten for that matter which are essentially the same only one is a ball and the other is stick shaped

  • Oh and could you just for fun try to pronounce the word: Enschede? It is the name of the town where I live and 30 seconds to mars tried to pronounce it (so did a lot of other english, Irish and amerikan folks that I have met) and it sounds absolutely! hilarious.. next time if you come to Holland, come to: Enschede :D it is a great place!

  • Bitterballen!! <3.. Have you also tasted: bakleverworst, pepernoten, speculaas, stroopwafels and holladnse nieuwe?? They all taste great and are all typical Dutch! Oh and have you ever taste drop (liquorish) most non-Dutch people absolutely hate it but many dutch-folks love it!

  • Comment removed

  • IT is so funny. I was a nanny for a family from the Netherlands and they had the butter and chocolate sprinkles for lunch, yes lunch all the time!! Apparently it IS a Dutch thing!! The other thing they ate all the time was bread and butter with sugar sprinkled on top!!

  • @kgummee Sugar on top of bread is not something typically Dutch though, never heard of anyone eating it, and I'm Dutch. I hope you tasted (gestampte) muisjes (something you put on bread with butter, it's made of anise) when you were here, they are typically Dutch and they are delicious!

  • @Beekdalbandieten It's more of an old Dutch thing, the sugar on bread. My mom eats it sometimes. I do too very rarely. It's nice. Also on beschuit ^_^ Lekker!

  • 31 people are not made of awesome. 31 people have bitter balls (and not the good kind.)
