Not particularly fond of Duracoat or the finish it produces. I can see the obvious utility, but there's no substitute for a little oil and TLC. Many of my guns show wear in the finish, but with proper care, does it really affect durability or longevity? I've never had a problem with corrosion, because I wipe all my guns down with a combo of Hoppies No9 and gun oil. A variety of finishes as well including Nickel, Blued, and Parkerized. I do realize though that wear protection wasn't your purpose.
Krylon or aervoe wears fast from holdsters like 50 in and outs and my glock rubbed through at the trigger guard. Thanks for showing wear I will now duracoat my glock frame. Any suggestions on how to comets strip the aervoe paint without hurting the polymer?
@elox02 Sandpaper would do it but would take forever. The fastest way would be to use air blaster (AO media). It should come off quick, without damaging the polymer.
honestly if it wears out that quick i dont see the point of paying a shit load for duracoat when you can geta big can of krylon for less than 5 bucks.
@Ben85paintball My glocks are gen3 and even where the duracoat is worn off, the black finish underneath still looks perfect. So I don't know what your gun's problem is. There's quite a bit of discussion on various sites regarding the "change" in glock finishes but I'm no expert on it. Ultimately, if you have the duracoat professionally applied, they'll AO blast the weak finish right off and apply the duracoat directly to the metal. It should do well. Lookup ceracoat as well.
@grishfish cerakote is the way to go from the research ive done, but i will find out for myself..im taking my ruger p345 in to a dude that is gonna do a acu digital camo on it. Thanks for the video.
@rlphwiggum There's virtually no masking if you spray it assembled and there's no reason to spray the internals. The whole barrel isn't duracoated; only the part that extends about 1/8" beyond the slide and, yes, it wears off quickly. Black guns stand out worse than light colored guns under light colored shirts so duracoat, in this instance, is more for camouflage than corrosion protection.
@cptexas1 Yeah, that's a tough place to exist for any coating. Everywhere else on the brake, the DC still looks perfect. Thanks for the comment. Cheers.
@grishfish I use the floor standing blasting cabinet from Harbor Freight with "course" AO from Brownells. The AO from Brownells is superior to any I have used thus far. Believe me, if your doing a lot of duracoating, spend the money, you will love the result!!!
@SabreTacticalCT Will any old blasting gun work with the course AO media? Sorry if it's a ignorant question, but I'm a total noob to blasting. It looks like most blasting guns are fairly inexpensive.
@grishfish Not an ignorant question at all! The great thing about the Harbor Freight cabinet is that it comes with everything you need for under 200 bucks. It comes with the gun, 4 or 5 tips, and the gloves. All you need is the cabinet and the AO and that's it! (Compressor of course) You pour 15 or 20 pounds of media into the bottom of the cabinet and it acts as a hopper and you just blast away and it recycles itself! If you need more info, I can message it all to you.
@SabreTacticalCT I'm going to get it. I didn't realize it came with a gun. That's cool. Thanks for the info! This will save me a ton of prep time (as you well know).
I coated a glock 21. The frame took the coating great, but I had it peel off the tennifer worse than yours. I had to sand the tenifer completly off, and coat it again. It seems to be holding up.
@KrimsonDragon210 Most of items are holding up better than expected. Except for the tenifer Glock slide and the teflon coated blade on the Recon Scout, this stuff works well.
wtf is tenifer???? looks like you didnt prep the gun good and you probably didnt sand it good

@buckwheat40 No shit sherlock. Like I said in the video, I didn't "prep" the glock at all.

@SupremeAmerican You obviously didn't watch, or understand, the video. Don't feel bad though, lots of people have small brains like you.

@Ben85paintball I assume you mean the tenifer finish on Glocks? Duracoat is tough but not bulletproof. I suggest you have it professionally applied.
grishfish 4 months ago
why on earth would you spray it fully assembled?
and i wouldn't duracoat the barrel, i'd get it robar'd or something instead. the barrel obviously is going to get worn immediately.

The muzzle brake was a surprise - I'm guessing the sonic concussive force + heat is tough on the coating? Good vid - thanks!

Just my 2 cents, if you blast with aluminum oxide before applying your finish will stick 100 times better.
