After trying to many readers, E-ink and LCD, I decided on the Kobo. Feature comparison may find the Kobo to be "missing" features. This is misleading. What Kobo does well is let you read, period.
It doesn't "surf" the web nor play songs, that's not what I want an ebook for.
Buy your books on the eReader, your phone or computer. Then sync at any wifi point! It's also the lightest device out there and one of the cheapest. If you really want to /read/ get a Kobo.
What disturbs me is that "The Communist Manifesto" by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels is included as the 100 Classic books pre-loaded. Is it Kobo's idea or Chapters/Indigo's?? Communism has killed at least 130 million people so far. 10% of all Canadians are refugees from Communism or the descendents of refugees from Communism. Tell the Chapters / Indigo bookstore monopoly you are not interested in buying mandatory Communism with your e-book reader!
Is this a joke? I'll reply as though you are serious, just because you don't agree with the subject matter The Communist Manifesto is an important peice of literature, do you only read books with points of views you agree with? How sad...
@RichGilly Mein Kampf is an important piece of literature, involved with world-shaking events. But it killed people too; about a third or half of what Communism killed. Shall we pre-load e-books with that too?
I guess you were serious, alright; my answer to that question is: sure, why not? Let me guess, you are in favor of editing out of "niger" from Huckleberry Finn? Also a book doesn't kill people (unless it is a heavy book, dropped from a very high place)
@Dracopol What about the Bible? What about the Quran? Should all sacred texts be boycotted as well as all political thoughts that you don't see as ideal? There have been more wars fought over religion than any other matter in history. To stop production of these books would be ignorant. There are other points of view apart from your own.
@infiniteozzyfan It's hardly a point of view that Communism is valid. It's a SICK PATHOLOGY that entitles people to KILL infinite numbers of their own citizens trying to achieve that sick system. There's a reason to ban such texts from the Kobo reader and it's a good reason, just like we would ban a text that said, "Kill everybody you see!" 100,000 times. The Kobo people and Indigo/Chapters can't justify putting in this book. Let those with tastes in genocide buy it on their own.
@Dracopol I think it will do you good to read it before you pass judgement... that book is an important work that has shaped our world and banishing it or censoring it will do nothing good... Censorship leads to Ignorance and ignorance leads to more Censorship... and before you know it we'll see the rise of a new Mao, Stalin, Hitler, Saddam etc.
if you wont read it take a look at this youtube vid: /watch?v=0KUl4yfABE4&feature=player_embedded#at=487
@ostesvin No one should be forced to accept an evil book from the get-go. Let Kobo be pure and empty, and those who are interested and who think there is any value in reading The Communist Manifesto can order it.
@Dracopol jeezes man, so paranoid? It's just a book and fact is that it's actually a very good book with decent ideas. If you don't like it, just delete it and don't make such a fuss about it.
@Shahin2102 I WANT to make a fuss about it, because the book is PURE EVIL. Its ideas are not decent, it says it justifies destroying individual freedom and stealing from individuals for the sake of lazy cadres feathering their nests. It's all Communism ever did. Communism has never uplifted people, only freedom of action can do that. Why does Heather Riesman insist it be on everyone's Kobo by default?
@Dracopol the communist manifesto was written with good intentions and preached equality for everyone. In theory, it created a perfect world. It just wasn't practicable in reality because for communist system to work, not 1 link may be corrupted, which is almost never the case.
It's good that people can read up on these subjects so that they don't get any wrong ideas about "how this book is pure evil". You don't kill ignorance by making people ignorant.
@Shahin2102 "The road to Hell is paved with good intentions." Nope, I don't accept apologists for Communism. The just system is where the creative and productive keep the fruits of their own labour, otherwise no one will want to be creative & productive.
And those who want to read THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO can sign a waiver that they are rational adults, they can sniff what a corpse smells like and sign a waiver agreeing that Communism produced 130 million of them, THEN they can order the book!
@Dracopol Jezus christ, if you don't want to read the damn book then don't read it! There are plenty of people unlike you who see this as an opportunity to expand their knowledge on the conflict between Communism and Capitalism. Just because you're so paranoid about it doesn't mean everyone has to share your opinion. You're suggesting a form of censorship, which makes you more dangerous than a book that has already proven to be erroneous in practice.
@johnesco Well, wait a minute here. Why should I be sold a product with a Communism book pre-loaded? None of the OTHER books push a political view! Why do the manufacturers and Chapters/Indigo push such a book onto people? It is one of the rare examples of non-fiction (although fantasy non-fiction) in the list, and the ONLY book with a political outlook.
@Dracopol 130 million?? no 130 billion people the entire population of the milky way! How many American Indians and African slaves etc. etc. they have killed your friends Yankee!
@ambspin Look, you loony, 130 million real people died under Communism: 90 million in China, 20 million in Russia, and others in many other countries where Communism was imposed. We can't have Kobo spreading the means to kill fellow human beings.
@olddeuteronomy Thanks ... I was hopeful to see newer items similar to this product where there is more interaction with the user; it would be nice to see this product being used to gain some independence in those that rely on others to enjoy reading. With new technology breakthroughs every day I am hopeful. Currently my son uses computer software through school and they encourage the use of I touch I pods for agendas I was curious to the use of applications available if any.
I have a son with a learning disability.. what kind of products are available that read to them? I would love to see something like this that encourages and helps others that have difficulties enjoy books. A product that reads to them with perhapes pictures displayed. There are many people that need to put function to memory in order to learn and adding a picture function would not only help them but open the door to younger generations for a larger market.
@bowflexor Before you pat yourself on the back for such a reply. My son is 13, he reads at a senior kindergarden level, he has been diagnosed with a severe learning disability. My water broke 2 months before he was due, he almost died, not only does he have communication learning imparment, he has ADHD and life threatening allergies. I don't quite think someone so simple that honestly thinks a comment like such as this one could even begin to understand the drain on the family structure.
@bowflexor Both myself and his father have 2 other children and have been together for 20 years. Dispite my childs difficulties he is our tropper. People such as yourself can be quite cruel but my son continues to do the best he can, he is an cadet in our community, at age 12 is life dream was crushed when he was told he would never be accepted into the army but he continues to go. Students laughed durring his presentation for school but he asked to do it again. SHAME ON YOU!
My gf boght a book from kobo. It turns out the book was just converted by some utility and kobo didn't have anyone check the book in kobo format. The utility failed to handle tables properly resulting in large sections of scrambled text. Kobo support said a refund would be issued but after 2 weeks and another call it was just a lie. Try to avoid Kobo because of their proprietary book format and poor customer support.
I just got mine today, I saw this video first, but what you don't see is the PC software which is very disappointing, you can't easily add and remove books other than through the store and I'm not even certain that works 100%, I don't see my 100 pre-loaded books in the desktop application, oddly just a few of them. The device seems great, I tried purchasing and loading it with a book using my blackberry that worked great, but I had to search for the kobo outside of the BB kobo app first.

hahahaha left justification with ragged right, can someone tell the engineers who make the software for this ebook reader that full justification fills up the screen the most so it doesnt look like you're reading a page as if the right side was torn?

I see the unit is black in the video but white on the website, are both going to be available? Are other colors going to be available?
Can I simply drag and drop my epubs into a folder or is getting them on there more complicated?
Thanks for clarification.
