@tallperson605 yea, I was watching the movie and had to find the Broadway version of this song.I was so confused why the lady was stripping on the beach in front of little boys. This clip makes more sense than Fergie's performance . . . even with less setting.
Broadway = Not film. Choices are going to be extremely different for character, acting, costume, and how it looks to the audience. Film has an extreme allowance when it comes to making a production look creative, theatre is limited.
People really need to understand the difference between film and theatre. Damn comparisions, Kathy Moss and Fergie should be equally appreciated for their interpretation.
Remember tho, the musical was based off of Fellini's 81/2. In the movie version of nine, Marshall wanted was in a way remaking 81/2 as well as making the movie version of Nine. As for Kathi Moss' accent, it was prolly a stage direction to loose the accent. Prolly for diction reasons. Fergie could have a hard accent because the could make her dialogue clear in post production.
Fergie's version was much more a music video version. So it's way different then this, which is a musical scene. There really is no comparison. In this, I feel like I'm watching Saraghina and with Fergie...well it's liking I'm watching Fergie. It doesn't feel as if she's actually teaching the boys anything...in fact, are the boys even in that tarantella section with the tambourine's in Fergie's version?
@daytonville In the movie version, the way they set it all up was when the women sang, they were on a the set that they were designing for his movie, 'Italy.' Even though the boys are not present during the tambourine scene, it's meant to be like they're in the audience of the stage. It was sort of foreshadowing the ending when he comes back to do the film 'Nine.' It's confusing, I know, but I try to look at it from a directors point of view. Plus it just looks better. ;p
i know she's trying to be seductive throughout the song however, does anyone else think she looks like she is going to eat that first child....her eyes were just all over the place like "yep...he looks tasty...mmmm.....oh i'm going to enjoy this one!!!" :P
However i love Kathi Moss' version of this song. She doesn't quite have the accent though!
She sure is good.... BUT, sorry guys, don't know if there are other italians among those who posted comments here... well, i am. She really sounds NOT italian... i mean, I think she doesn't sound the way an Italian speaking english does... And the voice... great one, but I still prefer Fergi (she just seems more at her ease... probably Kathi Moss should have tried the song in a less low tune...).
I think that the reason most people liked the version in the movie is that it was very visual. With all the tambourines and the sand flying everywhere. As opposed to the theatrical version in this one. For me, Fergie got it on her vocals, but Kate made it with her acting prowess. So both of them excelled.
Fergie is by far the better singer, she really pulled it off to my surprise. However, Kathi Moss plays the character better. She really comes off as an Italian, rather than a gypsy. Both Fergie and Moss are fantastic at the role, they just both bring something different to the role.
This rendition clearly outweighs that of Fergie's in terms of....culture. Fergie's film performance was obviously much more visually impressive, and I'd say she also has (in my opinion) a stronger vocal delivery, but Moss' sense of character can't be denied in this performance. Very different contexts, but in all, I'd say they're both very well done.
God; they edited the HELL out of this part in the movie adaption, and I have to admit (guilty) that Fergie did this better in the movie (though the film WAS a serious DISAPPOINTMENT).
@TanyaMarie4ever ohh poor ho,you don't know she uses a voice modifier for her music, but I still love he songs, even if they are not real :P,if you don't believe me check her at the superbowl and compare her at one of her music videos :P,and I'm not hating,I'm just saying the ugly truth :P
You do know that people can have off nights, right? I'm not saying Fergie's voice isn't modified in studio recordings, but no one is perfect at every live performance. Christina Aguilera isn't always perfect. Neither is Beyonce. Hell, Liza Minelli hasn't been able to sing in years.
ummm in the eyes of theatre performers it does matter. 2nd off, hitting a tambourine against your body does not count as dancing, remember this is the tony awards, not the actual broadway show so she only had to perform that piece. and being a musical performer I CAN hit that note thank you very much
I think the girl here does a better version than Fergie. She pulls the character off way better. Fergie seems more gypsy than italian, and this girl looks like a big ass italian woman, that wants to be loved, but if you mess with her, she will kill you. fergie doesn't pull that off as well.
I think its just different. Fergie's seems more "unappoachable" and "colder" (intentionally.) Yes, more gypsy-like, thats true. This one seems warmer and more "fun"
i agree. I can say that fergie does one thing better. on the line "live everyday as if it were your last" this girl can't hit that high note on the word "last" like fergie did, which i commend fergie for.
@grayfox622 well u must also keep in mind that this gurl is singing live but also u must give this women credit she made this song and character come alive
the women in white are the women of Guido Contini. They are in white because the first part of the show the director (main character of the musical) produces films in black & white...Second act is in color. Also if you notice "saraghina" this woma is inspired in the slut of Fellini's AMARCORD...Don't foget NINE is inspired in Fellini's 81/2...
I love this song... This shows the difference between Broadway and Film .. Film needs to show sex appeal ... and casting a 45 yr old fat woman in todays standards does not bring in VIEWERS.. especially since THIS IS THE SONG OF THE MUSICAL...
@syworld82 The song is sung by the character of a prostitute, there is supposed to be sex appeal and stop defending the woman in this video in comparison to fergie, this woman has an awful voice for both theater and film and fergie's version clearly superior.
Aw this is ok but if you want i really good one and you live in nj try chester theaters version i think they only have 3 shows left but ill try to get it I went and saw it and thought it was 10 times better than this
hehe i think both versions (this one and fergie's) are great. you just can't compare them. for example, people kept comparing sweeney on stage and on film-both are great just different.. thats just a personal opinion i may be biased
As great as Fergie sounds singing this - and I mean that sincerely, I wasn't expecting her to sound as good as she does - I think I prefer the deep tone to Moss' voice. Fair play to Fergie though - and if the trailer's anything to go by, the tambourine choreography looks amazing in the film!
Absolutely. I've shown the trailer to some people and they've been surprised when I've told them it was her singing too.
As an aside, I *really* want to see Penélope Cruz' "A Call From The Vatican" in the next trailer, if there is one... the little bits we see in the first trailer look great, and I want to know how her vocal holds up!
I wouldn't say that Fergie sounds better (even though I love Ferg more than anything) But I say that, along with LaCageAuxGypsy, It's a different portayal. I like both versions.
When they are filming this for the movie version, I think Rob Marshall should do what Bill Condon did for 'And I am Telling You' in Dreamgirls - he choreographed it in the exact way as the Tony performance...
I'll love it when I'll be 69

I think Fergie sounds great in the trailer, but please don't compare her performance to this one because:
1) Kathi Moss is doing this live (and this is the first time I've seen this and I think she's doing a great job.)
2) Fergie's version was recorded in a studio, most likely edited and made to sound perfect.)
But like I said, I like both.

Absolutely. I've shown the trailer to some people and they've been surprised when I've told them it was her singing too.
As an aside, I *really* want to see Penélope Cruz' "A Call From The Vatican" in the next trailer, if there is one... the little bits we see in the first trailer look great, and I want to know how her vocal holds up!

i actually hope they save it until the movie is released, let people be suprised by her vocals.

I wish my voice was as manly as hers. I'm a 20yr old.
Also....where are those boys now? I would like to know....
I'm worried for them.
