Don't understand the hate being thrown at this film - it does not have a pretentious or cynical bone in it's body. All ages can enjoy this film, it isn't just some throwback to a bygone era. It being silent is not a gimmick to make it seem more "artful" it is a method for the story of a silent filmmaker to be told, and it uses it in funny and creative ways (Hint/Spoiler: The movie isn't silent the whole time). Not boring or needlessly "arty" (which is stupid to say since film is an art form)

This film was alright, but it wasn't Hugo or The Tree of Life. Hugo was a fantastic tribute and celebration of Georges Melies' work, and indeed, film in general. This just felt like an imitation. It was good, but not Best Picture good, especially with the two others I mentioned nominated.

The trailer's all you need to see. The movie itself is extremely lightweight, with the trailer condensing the only good parts. The film wasn't "pretentious," just very slight and rather dull, however pleasant the lead actors. Certainly not a "Best Picture/Director/Actor" film. I think those in the academy voted for it to congratulate themselves on voting for a "silent/black-and-white film." Very self-reflexive and shallow.
