Repost from elsewhere. The book is brilliant. You should not watch the movie if you intend to read the book (the movie gives too much away too soon). The fun thing about William Goldman novels (Magic, Control, and Marathon Man) is their structure. Goldman leaves out important details that when revealed are shocking, surprising, and quite fun. If you like to read - and even if you don't - check one of these out just to see what I'm talking about. They are terrifically entertaining.
I love Nazi-next-door movies. This and The Boys from Brazil have piqued my interest lately. As well as Apt Pupil, anyone have other recommendations for similar films?
Probably one of the most nerve shredding thrillers ever made. Absolutely stunning performances by all the leading actors. As for Roy Scheider, I really thought the world of this guy. Sadly missed.
@watcher9999999999999 What's even stranger is that a couple of years after Marathon Man, Laurence Olivier was in Boys from Brazil where he played a nazi hunter.
I saw this movie on HBO as a teen 25 years go as a teen and I laways remered how great a movie it was. For Aspiring Filmmakers-these are the type of movies to watch and study.
trailer kind of spoils everything....BRILLANT movie none the less! I can't believe it isn't that popular or well known as say, Pulp Fiction. It definetly is up there with that, if not better.
It's not a hard story to follow, but it's really hard to explain it - rent the movie, or better yet, check out or buy the book. It is my all time favorite book!
With a cast headed by Hoffman, Olivier, Scheider and Devane, and a script based on a well-written, fast-paced novel, it is hardly suprising that this is a movie I can watch with undiminished interest any time it crops up. Pity someone hasn't put up the whole thing. From this movie I learnt that cloves alleviate toothache, for which information I am sincerely grateful.

My parents took me to see this when I was 4 years old, and it totally horrified me.
I couldn't sleep alone for a week. Now it is one of my favorite movies. Still freaky though.

comes the best if you watch it the evening before you have a date with a new dentist

My parents, in their infinite wisdom, took me to see this movie when I was 5 years old.
I did not sleep for a week.

Olivier - how does he play this nazi and then be the religious father from The Jazz Singer .... amazing.
From "Is it safe" to "I HAVE no son!"

Brilliantly executed thriller. One of the best of the 70's. They rarely make top notch films like this anymore.

Marathon Man is a very good but also very scary movie

@Hendrikdevuile What movie will teach you that learnt isn't a word?
Beatnikzombie 1 year ago
@Beatnikzombie I fear you are mistaken. At least 18 dictionaries disagree with you.
I refer you to my private message, as the posting of links is not allowed in YouTube
comments. But I really don't understand why I should consult a movie to check the correctness of my English.
Hendrikdevuile 1 year ago
@Beatnikzombie "Learnt" is the past participle of "learn". In British English. "Learn" can be regular or irregular.
