you may want to try replacing the external enclosure, i got a 1tb seagate that is completely fine after swapping it out, and i bought a second enclosure for my 1.5tb that was clicking and swirling like mad to see if that helps.
I had to return my 1.5TB expansion drive to Maplins and they replaced but now the 2nd unit is showing signs of the same problem, loud clicking noises and taking ages to respond..........BUT I have just discovered that if you turn the unit upside down then it works perfectly! No more clicking sounds! Could it be that the units have been manufactured internally upside down??
It worked perfectly, first time i bent down the tab kept clicking, tried a second time and wrapped the USB with tape now works totally perfect. THANKS!!!
OK as crazy as this sounds, this fix just fixed my 2GB Seagate Expansion drive that's been clicking for over a year now. It was driving me nuts. Many thanks n9jcv!
THANK YOU!!! THIS 100% WORKS. After following the guide step by step I felt skeptical that some tape and paper would fix the clicking but it totally did. One tip is don't be shy with the tape this didn't work for me at first so I applied more tape and it worked. Five star.
Outstanding. Thanks very much for the time you took to resolve this problem and share the solution with us. Fixed the drive immediately. Much appreciated.
This did not work with me. I don't know if I did anything wrong or whatever... but what really worked for me was remove the drive from the case, then put into a desktop PC, then update the firmware to the CC35 version (it's avaiable at the Seagate website, beware about the model of your hard drive). Put back to the external case. No more clicking nor slowdowns since then for almost 3 weeks. The drive clicks when it is turned on only...
My drive did this very thing, and suffice to say I will never buy a Seagate product again as long as I live. This sort of BS is just unacceptable. They should have done a model-wide recall as soon as the problem was found out if they wanted to keep their reputation and customers.
Are these Expansion hard drives able to be installed as internal drives? Are they regular height or laptop height drives? I have the 1 TB version, but considering the reliability issues other have had, I was thinking about just cracking it open, installing it internally and using another external backup.
Hi guys, I also had the click of death. I dismantled the HD and removed it from its metal case. I then operated the disk and its controller in free air for days without a single click. I suspect there is grounding problem on the USB controller or the HD itself. As the USB board has 2 grounding points, it could easily generates a current loop that lifts up the noise floor, reducing the noise immunity. As head positioning data are corrupted, the heads hit their stops, hence the click.
Thanks for the tip Bruce, I just did the trick a while ago to my new HD (clicked since day one). I did some heavy testing, and so far the drive is really silent to what it used to be!
Thanks for identifying the problem. I also fixed my 2TB drive by splitting a plastic straw and sliding it between the USB jack and the case then taping the excess straw to the case to hold it in place. I did this without opening the case. It seems to be working fine.
@DrGarcia55 Glad it worked for you. Mine worked for a few days and started up again. I took it back to Fry's and exchanged it, but the replacement just started clicking after working fine for a few days. I will try the straw again, but I have also seen people getting entirely new 3rd party drive cases or replacing the USB cable and saying these solutions worked. N9JCV, is your original fix still working?
Yes you can do this fix WITHOUT opening the case. You can simply insert a piece of plastic (in this case a small cut strip of a straw) in between the usb jack and the metal tab as shown in the video. It was a bit difficult for me to insert the straw because it was so tight, but I just used an xacto knife to wedge in between while inserting.
I've just performed the fix on my 3rd Seagate Expansion drive. (RMA'd the 1st one and the 2nd one was DOA! ) So far so good. going to put it though a disk diag test to further stress it but from the looks of it the problem was simply an issue with the USB to SATA circuit board not being properly insulated from the drive case/AC adapter noise.

Tente usar um HUB USB energinado (com energia própria, daqueles que vem com fonte para ligar na tomada)

yes it works, this was my first seagate, never again 199 bad sectors so far. Sorry seagate but I will stick with WD.

Yes! Done. It works.

Very helpfull. Although I don't think this is the cause of most of the clicking issues. It has to do with the internal workings of the drive.
Other then that great help.
Audio was very low and a sleepy voice though. :P

I removed my 1.5Gb Seagate Expansion, attached to another enclosure and it still clicking.
Also I tried connect to a computer as internal. No luck.
