I like the color of the horse. I especially like your relaxed style and the horse looks like he is happy, and willing. I can tell by his ears and body language. You are obviously a kind person.
@RazSilverpaw Thanks! He's actually half paint and half percheron and is almost totally white now at the grand ol' age of 13... he was 8 when I filmed this so quite a bit darker then. He's a grey pinto/paint.
Beautiful. Time well spent in this life. I never want to leave my horse and go back into the day to day things. Oh you two are beautiful together. I have a new 3 year old Friesian who I can almost bow her all the way down. Now I can work on more tricks like you do. I have her through all of Parelli level 1. But I don't ride her yet so now long lunging. Thanks you are precious.
Nice horse, my horse is named Max, I used to do Parelli, but I stopped. Check out my channel and yo will find my video of my horse, he kinda looks like your horse.
I taught him first to back up when I wiggle my finger at him by standing in front of him, when he knew how to do that I went behind him and used the lead rope to ask him to back when I lifted his tail. It also sometimes works better to ask them to move sideways from their tail first before asking for straight back.
Your horse looks like he is a quieter horse. I am trying to train my horse to sit up and he has a very low energy level. He only knows how to lay down right now but we just started. Pretty horse. What breed is he?
hmmmm I posted a comment..but I don't see it.. Well what i was saying was great work. He is very cute. No place better than playing with your paint colored horse. I also have a pmu horse...tb. percheron. Keep on the good work . I'll post a video you might like , if not you can just take it off.
i really want to teach my pony tricks. i started with bowing today, and want to do other stuff aswell, deffinately rearing, when im on her and from the the ground, but i dont really know how to do it. has anyone got any tips?
@horsymad100 DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TEACH YOUR HORSE TO REAR!!! That is a VERY dangerous thing to teach, unless you have a professional. If you could stress the horse, plus if the horse is not taught to rear properly, she could very easily turn rearing into a bad habit!!!!
Please listen to me! If your horse gets into a rearing habit, she could hurt someone or herself.
that was well gd how did u teach him how to do all that stuff i loved it wen u pointed to his legs and he wuld stamp them !! nd the blanket on his back lol that was funny bet u put a lot of effort and hard work into all that the best thing my horse can do is go under his door bar nd he figured that out himself!!!
Oh I doubt they're related. Similar coloring doesn't have anything to do with whether horses are related or not and Max is really one of a kind. He's half percheron and half paint horse, from a PMU farm up here in Alberta, Canada.
I sat looking very carefully - the horse obvisously is enjoying itself, no stress, only harmony. As a former dressage equestrian, I must say, it is impressive and admirable and not least: beautiful and life affirming! This is the kind of relationship all people should have with their horses! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for such a nice comment. We have another video on here called "Tribute to Max" if you're interested in seeing that as well. I aim to always keep my horses' stress levels low and have that harmony but it sure isn't easy to be consistently that way. I'm glad you liked it!
lol thanks, at the moment dobbs is being a right bum lol if u want have a look at the vids about him. :) i will have a look at that website thank u. take care, ure pony is great! x
oh my gosh! you are amazing! i've always wanted 2 do natural horsemanship training with my horse. I havn't done any with her yet. the closest to what u do that i can get is free lunging around the whole arena (no smaller), stopping with no reins (and when free lunging), walking in circles with no tack, and getting her 2 fallow me. what kind of horse is max?
thanks. That's a pretty good start. natural horsemanship isn't that hard to learn. Check out the Parelli website for more info if you want. Max is a percheron x paint gelding.
I started teaching him to smile by holding a treat out in front of his lip and tickling his top lip with my finger as I used the verbal cue "smile" and when he lifted his lip I'd give him the treat. Eventually weaned him off treats except for every once in awhile as a reward.
wow your soo lucky. how old r u ? ill be 16 in october and am raise in the valley of cali. i wanna move to a town 40 min away from bakersfield, california wheres theres alot of horses, a country sorta thing. ive never owned a horse but use to ride em when i was younger and love em. your lucky, such a beautiful horse!! i also plan to volunteer at a horse rescue this summer. how much did he cost you? when you bought him at 3? and how anyone can hurt such a beaitufl creature is beyond me
Thanks :) I'm 26 now. I was 18 when I bought Max. He cost me about $800. I think that's great that you're planning to volunteer at a rescue. I think you'll really get a lot out of it. I volunteered at a rescue near my home for 5 years off and on and learned more there than just about anywhere else. Good luck with your horse journey!
Any of them can do it. Max is by far the most challenging horse I've ever had. He's stubborn, extremely smart (not always a good thing!), and skeptical by nature, plus he had been badly neglected and was untouched when I bought him as a 3 year old. He was my first horse, so if we can do this, anyone can! Just takes dedication and its all worth it.
He was 8 when we did this vids.. he's 10 now. I bought him as a 3 year old and he was untouched and neglected. It took me 5 years and over 5000 hrs of training time to get him to the level you see us at in the video. Lots of work but its fun :)
I've taught him to back and move sideways from his tail. It's not mean because I only use the lightest pressure needed to get a response, the only time it pulls is when he's resisting. Its just another form of communication between us.
I've seen several people pull their tails to give into the pressure as a form of communicating which is neat you can get him to do that, but I've always wondered if the horse likes it. Both of my horses will do that if you put pressure b/c they understand the pressure communication, but I don't do it regularly.
I'm also curious...you mentioned Parelli and natural horsemanship. I thought that you are supposed to communicate w/ your horse as other horses do..naturally. How is pulling on their tail natural? I've seen horse bite each other's tail but not pull each other around. Could you explain your methods?
thompa5, I can explain: I watched my horse's boyfriend bite her tail and drag her backwards 4 steps. The little bugger took out a lot of hair at the top of her tail; I hope that it braids ok this season!
I don't hardly pull on his tail at all. He's so sensitive to pressure that I can back him simply holding on a few hairs. It doesn't hurt them to have their tail pulled, but you have to teach them to go side to side before straight back so they understand it clearly and always use phases of pressure. I used his halter and lead as a back up to reinforce my request for him to back from his tail.
I always suggest starting with Parelli natural horsemanship. parelli dot com is their website and if you start with level 1 and work on it, you'll have all the basics for everything I've done with Max.
PLEASE DONT READ THIS. YOU WILL GET KISSED ON THE NEAREST POSSIBLE FRIDAY BY THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE. TOMORROW WILL BE THE BEST DAY OF YOUR LIFE. I started with the Parelli program and branched out from there to lots of different styles of natural horsemanship training. Parelli is the best place to start though IMO.
Hey con21192, if you have a mini and would love to train him..go check out Peggy Hogan's Clicker training on this Youtube forum. She's awesome and also has some cute minis to watch in her videos. Not to take anything away from charcoal angel here. She obviously has training down pat. Both of these women are so inspirational! Good luck!
do you have a trick that if easy to teach i just bough a new mini and have spent the last month gaining his trust and he is food modivated to ahah lmao and very willing is there any tricks you could send me that are relitivly eay for a yound horse?
A trick that's easy to teach (and kinda useful) is fetch. You simply get an object which is easy to pick up (my Mom used a rubber ducky to teach her mare), and then drop it in front of your horse. If/when they touch it with their nose, you'll reward them with a treat. Then repeat until they go to nibble it, reward that with a treat, and keep asking them for a bit more each time, and only reward with a treat when they get it right.
Thanks! It didn't take long to teach him most things. I would caution against teaching tricks to a horse unless you're prepared for the consequences, as you cannot unteach them and some tricks can be dangerous. If you're prepared to instill the respect into the horse first, and prepared to explain to everyone who handles the horse what tricks they know, then go ahead. It doesn't take long and it is fun. I also don't teach tricks to any horse I might one day sell for safety reasons again.
It didn't take him long to learn tricks. He's very food motivated. My concern with teaching tricks is always the level of respect required from the horse beforehand. Anyone can teach tricks, but you cannot "unteach" them and some can be dangerous if the horse does not have the highest respect for their handler and people in general. It probably only took me a maximum of 30 minutes per trick but thousands of hours gaining his respect.
(LAST!) I do so hope ... I can get "back" there again ... and until then, so thrill w/ your work. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I don't know who's the "charcoal," you or Max (certainly it would seem to be him), but certainly you are also angelic! Good work, as always. Keep going, and keep sharing. Best, Temmie
Thanks Temmie for all your kind words. I'm so glad to hear you'll have a chance to pursue your passion with horses, and get back in the saddle as it were. Keep in touch! I'll have new videos to post soon. (at least that's what I keep promising but life keeps getting in the way!) Take care!
(3) From work on the flat and over fences, and training with the BHS, my roots are in bareback/bridleless work ... w/ a fair amount of fun riding tandem w/ rescue mounts (and gymnastics on horseback too). Much like you sitting on the rump of Max (then sliding off).
(2) Have recently contacted the equestrian center w/ our local university and been invited to teach. This would be a return to my "first" career (as horsewoman). Currently I work as a school teacher. AT ANY RATE (!) ... I will only teach if I can do advanced lessons for riders ready to do schooling, and I'm sure learning from you will guide and inform some of my work.
(1) Charcoal (Angel) ... I did not get your message, but how sweet of you to write. Have subscribed to your videos, and look forward to learning/seeing more. I'm the one recovering from the "explosion" in my middle, and am feeling better, thank God. I have a deeper understanding/compassion about the nature of lameness now (and the confounding aspects of unseen injury).
Thank you for another heart-thrilling and visual treat. :-) Appreciate finding the link to your web page (didn't see it before now). So pleased and proud to see what you've been doing!
thanks :) did you get the email I tried to send to you before? Glad you liked the videos. We've started filming my Mom and her Mare now so I should be posting that soon too, as well as instructional videos on how to teach tricks and groundwork with my filly so watch for those. If you subscribe to my videos you'll get a message when I post more.
Hey, i'm kinda new to youtube i just wanted to know how do you make a video such as this one do you have to download a progarm to edit music and text into your video? and if so where can i go to download it!
thanks a bunch if any help! this video is really great :)
I used Adobe Premiere (expensive program I had used in college) to edit my videos together but you can get much cheaper programs that do essentially the same thing. There's a Premiere Elements that might work for you, or just look online for video editing software.
I'm going to put together a few more videos, some instructional, this spring using my 2 year old filly who doesn't know it all yet. If you subscribe to my videos you'll know when I post 'em. Thanks for the comment.
Oh dear ... sorry. One more note. Would you do me a favor and email your website address? I can't remember how I "found" you before. Thank you! Temmie512 at gmail dot com
Thank you for getting back to me ... not necessary ... and thank you for posting such beautiful/playful images of Max. These clips have become MY best friend, and I've enjoyed sharing your work with others. Hope to be back with horses soon ... and wishing you well. It's such a joy to watch the love and trust you and Max enjoy with one another.
Well thank you! I'll be filming my Mom and her mare this spring and posting videos on them as well. They are a fantastic team so I think you might enjoy that as well. My Mom has trained her mare entirely on her own and does more riding (bareback and bridleless) than Max and I, and some more/different groundwork so might be more inspiration for you as well. I'm glad you enjoy the videos.
Thanks :) It's fun too. This is just our goofy video. My other video "Tribute to Max" has more of what we do together. These here are just the clips I couldn't fit into the other one and things not going quite right which happens as soon as the camera goes on. :)
Well ... again ... this truly is fun and inspiring. It sounds like you're using Parelli techniques. I'm going to attend one of their workshops in June. I've been lucky, as a former professional to find someone who wants me to work with her schooling. Whether I'll ever ride again or not, perhaps I can buy a horse to "play with" on the ground. It certainly is fun. Work with horses? Best fun I ever had. Good job, and thanks for posting!
Thanks! :) Great to hear you're enjoying PNH as well. I've sort of gotten away from the Parelli program lately but am still enjoying the natural horsemanship journey. Thanks for the comment.
haha great video, i loved the max picking up the carrot stick for you :P I do parelli and loving. You might want to have a look at a couple of mine. I'm about to go checkout your other one :P
Yah, teaching him to fetch has been kinda handy. He's a clown though so will only do it if there's something in it for him :) Unless I have treats he acts like he has no idea what I'm asking for. Cheeky boy! :) I will check yours out too.

thompa5, I can explain: I watched my horse's boyfriend bite her tail and drag her backwards 4 steps. The little bugger took out a lot of hair at the top of her tail; I hope that it braids ok this season!
msityhorse2001 3 years ago
I don't hardly pull on his tail at all. He's so sensitive to pressure that I can back him simply holding on a few hairs. It doesn't hurt them to have their tail pulled, but you have to teach them to go side to side before straight back so they understand it clearly and always use phases of pressure. I used his halter and lead as a back up to reinforce my request for him to back from his tail.

how do yuo do this? i want to train my pony but i dont know how to start
DaideeLuvsHorses 4 years ago
I always suggest starting with Parelli natural horsemanship. parelli dot com is their website and if you start with level 1 and work on it, you'll have all the basics for everything I've done with Max.
charcoalangel 4 years ago
Wow You did a nice job w/ him..I want to train my horse that lol..
By the way cute horse!!!

jesusangel2006 4 years ago
I started with the Parelli program and branched out from there to lots of different styles of natural horsemanship training. Parelli is the best place to start though IMO.

Hey con21192, if you have a mini and would love to train him..go check out Peggy Hogan's Clicker training on this Youtube forum. She's awesome and also has some cute minis to watch in her videos. Not to take anything away from charcoal angel here. She obviously has training down pat. Both of these women are so inspirational! Good luck!
horsechickie2 4 years ago
do you have a trick that if easy to teach i just bough a new mini and have spent the last month gaining his trust and he is food modivated to ahah lmao and very willing is there any tricks you could send me that are relitivly eay for a yound horse?
con21192 4 years ago
A trick that's easy to teach (and kinda useful) is fetch. You simply get an object which is easy to pick up (my Mom used a rubber ducky to teach her mare), and then drop it in front of your horse. If/when they touch it with their nose, you'll reward them with a treat. Then repeat until they go to nibble it, reward that with a treat, and keep asking them for a bit more each time, and only reward with a treat when they get it right.
charcoalangel 4 years ago
thx so much ahah it will be funny im gunna teach him it lol
con21192 4 years ago
So eventually they only get a treat if they pick up the object and pass it to you.

charcoalangel 4 years ago
Wonderful video!
I'm urged to cuddle him - he's too cute
How long did it take to teach him all that? (I noticed, a few of the things he did would be cool to teach my friends mare)
NiokaPayne 4 years ago
I also don't teach tricks to any horse I might one day sell for safety reasons again.
charcoalangel 4 years ago
wow! beautiful horse! he is so smart too.

charcoalangel 4 years ago
Wonderful video. How long did it take your horse to learn all the tricks you did?
snowysfarra 4 years ago
It didn't take him long to learn tricks. He's very food motivated. My concern with teaching tricks is always the level of respect required from the horse beforehand. Anyone can teach tricks, but you cannot "unteach" them and some can be dangerous if the horse does not have the highest respect for their handler and people in general. It probably only took me a maximum of 30 minutes per trick but thousands of hours gaining his respect.
charcoalangel 4 years ago
(LAST!) I do so hope ... I can get "back" there again ... and until then, so thrill w/ your work. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I don't know who's the "charcoal," you or Max (certainly it would seem to be him), but certainly you are also angelic! Good work, as always. Keep going, and keep sharing. Best, Temmie
Temmie512 4 years ago
Thanks Temmie for all your kind words. I'm so glad to hear you'll have a chance to pursue your passion with horses, and get back in the saddle as it were. Keep in touch! I'll have new videos to post soon. (at least that's what I keep promising but life keeps getting in the way!) Take care!
charcoalangel 4 years ago
(3) From work on the flat and over fences, and training with the BHS, my roots are in bareback/bridleless work ... w/ a fair amount of fun riding tandem w/ rescue mounts (and gymnastics on horseback too). Much like you sitting on the rump of Max (then sliding off).
Temmie512 4 years ago
(2) Have recently contacted the equestrian center w/ our local university and been invited to teach. This would be a return to my "first" career (as horsewoman). Currently I work as a school teacher. AT ANY RATE (!) ... I will only teach if I can do advanced lessons for riders ready to do schooling, and I'm sure learning from you will guide and inform some of my work.
Temmie512 4 years ago
(1) Charcoal (Angel) ... I did not get your message, but how sweet of you to write. Have subscribed to your videos, and look forward to learning/seeing more. I'm the one recovering from the "explosion" in my middle, and am feeling better, thank God. I have a deeper understanding/compassion about the nature of lameness now (and the confounding aspects of unseen injury).
Temmie512 4 years ago
Thank you for another heart-thrilling and visual treat. :-) Appreciate finding the link to your web page (didn't see it before now). So pleased and proud to see what you've been doing!
Temmie512 4 years ago
thanks :) did you get the email I tried to send to you before? Glad you liked the videos. We've started filming my Mom and her Mare now so I should be posting that soon too, as well as instructional videos on how to teach tricks and groundwork with my filly so watch for those. If you subscribe to my videos you'll get a message when I post more.

Hey, i'm kinda new to youtube i just wanted to know how do you make a video such as this one do you have to download a progarm to edit music and text into your video? and if so where can i go to download it!
thanks a bunch if any help! this video is really great :)
k3yed 4 years ago
I used Adobe Premiere (expensive program I had used in college) to edit my videos together but you can get much cheaper programs that do essentially the same thing. There's a Premiere Elements that might work for you, or just look online for video editing software.
Thanks!

Temmie512 4 years ago
Well thank you! I'll be filming my Mom and her mare this spring and posting videos on them as well. They are a fantastic team so I think you might enjoy that as well. My Mom has trained her mare entirely on her own and does more riding (bareback and bridleless) than Max and I, and some more/different groundwork so might be more inspiration for you as well. I'm glad you enjoy the videos.

wow. thats COOL!!!

Yah, teaching him to fetch has been kinda handy. He's a clown though so will only do it if there's something in it for him :) Unless I have treats he acts like he has no idea what I'm asking for. Cheeky boy! :) I will check yours out too.
