Hi Kris, I think endorsements are nice to have not need to have, I was at the show with you and I played a few basses after you left. I dragged you to the Spector stand and recommended the Euro to you and you loved it and so did Mr Stevens. Spector do not pay me or endorse me (and maybe they should). As I only recommend Spectors to other bassists. Not for any other reason than the fact that I love Spectors. However, if they offered me a free bass, I would not turn them down :-)
By the way, I aquired my dream bass for £1,200 under the list price on ebay, a gorgeous black cherry Spector Euro LX, this is my final machine and will go on the wall with the other three Spector's I own. Whether or not Spector ever pay me or endorse me will never change my love of bass playing and I dont think endorsements will change yours, endorsements will however force you to make a choice of which machine you have to use publicly. Ibanez or Stingray, do you really want to make that choice?
@b5sfx That is a very good point, and no I wouldn't want to make the decision! How are you going with the Korg, my man? Sorted the bass? I hope you haven't tried to ring me. Forgot to mention its been sent off to get the power jack fixed.
@TheBlogOfKris Korg is great fun, I can stop the bass on individual tracks, but cant kill it permanently, every time I change to a different beat I have to kill the bass all over again. Cant save the setting either.
that is a very interesting point of view, but as many people have already mentioned, dont need to change your style/preferences to avoid giving free advertising imo
at the same time, pettiness and stinginess are negative and may be percieved that way by your viewers
i am in no way saying you're petty, it's your channel and you are indeed giving free advertising for these companies, but not everybody will perceive it that way
My opinion is to get paid any way you can. You have a skill and talent and there is no reason to give it away for free. The only situation I ever was in that comes close is people used to ask me advice about repairing motorcycles and I used to answer them until I found out they were using me as a repair manual and getting paid using my free knowledge. Bottom line, don't let other people get paid for your work.
500 char for prober answer is not enough! But i dont care about this kinda stuff. Dont see myself getting any endorsements ever or at least any time soon. And should that music ang playing be enough?
If someone would like to give you some free gear i think that just would be a plus.
And Kris dont forget your Ibanez either. Its good and cheap starter bass.
But if some one would give free bass then maybe start teaching with that? And do it with that bass as long they want to support you or so.
@MasaTheSlayer Great reply, Mas. Cheers buddy! Yea, you're right about the Ibanez as well. I played loads at the Bass show. Still in love with them...
before you got money for using a product you still used the product, you would recommend the gear because it is good not because they are paying you, that said it is not difficult as you say to simply use another bass on the vids, leave the EB in the case for vids, then you are not adding for free for another company which is not endorsing you, lots of people have more than one brand of this or that
Kris I think you should do it. I don't see why it would matter too much to us viewers if you have to say "I'm using a Musicman stingray bass" in the comments or whatever. You certainly deserve it.
Me personally, I wouldn't care. If they wanted to pay me, that's a plus. If they didn't I wouldn't worry about what was painted on my headstock. Life's too short for that kind of trivial negative energy. I would just keep on doing what I do for the love of music. Any other motivation is an unecessary nusiance, kinda like those thorns. ;)
Great view of your hometown and the ocean. I'm sure there is a lot of history there. As for the whole endorsement thing, you have to do what's best for you dude. It's not selling out. It's doing what you love to do and being supported by a company for exposing a product that you like to use and that you have faith in.
I have followed you for about a year. Your motivation comes from as pure a place as I have ever seen. If you can get more financial reward for what you do, you deserve it.
And you teach and help guys like me with utter selflessness that i think you should carry on with what you're doing without worrying about who's making money out of who. but i agree, I wouldn't want to advertise a brand and not get anything for it, and if you feel as though you need to use things like stickers it won't seem petty at all. i think most of us watch your videos because of the content, so we'd understand why you're not endorsing the brands.
I think you should do what you've been doing all this time, and thats teaching guys like me to play bass and generally being a really cool guy :)
Having said that though, if you do take up endorsements, I think it would be great for you. From your videos i've seen you're a really down to earth guy and i know you deserve every good thing you get and if that means you get a big break then go for it! you'd still have my (and certainly other peoples') respect no matter what.
On the contract (assuming there is one), ask for like a year of being paid to endorse their bass, and if they still want you too continue endorsing after that, just keep going with it. They'd be crazy to turn you down.
@Moochi96 Hey man, thanks for the reply :) As I said, none of this has happened yet, but it's something I think I need to think about. Sounds like im selling out talking about endorsements and stuff, but i'm not. Infact, it's the opposite! lol Thanks for your opinion dude :)
If they are giving you any gear for free, or discount, then i would say it is probably worth it
