Beautiful. Imagine what would be created if we took the pure sound of Boe and the passion of Crawford and birthed a perfect musical offspring. :) The mind reels.
Alfie Boe is an excellently trained tenor! He is my favorite voice for nearly any role I have heard him sing. There is no way to evaluate and compare top notch singers. Michael Crawford (the original phantom) was excellent due to his great emotion! I love Ramin as the phantom also! They all bring something new to their part! Their is no comparism! It is great to see such an excellently trained tenor leave the realm of opera and perform these songs. He would make an amazing phantom also!
In his defense it sounds like he's bound by the constraints of a backing track, which prevents him from playing around with the tempo, which in a lot of cases adds a lot of emotion to a song. Les Mis proved he can act, but he's still primarily a singer and he's never played the phantom, so he's never really had a chance to sing this song as passionately as someone playing the role
@barra193 although I'd wager when he was recording the album he'd have a live orchestra supporting him so he'd be able to slow down and speed up as he saw fit, which would probably help :)
@samwardsamward um his acting in Les Mis was so forced, and wooden. His voice is pretty awesome but not expressive at all!!! you dont need change the tempo of the song to portray emotion!!! If he was in a mask that would be true but his face is uncovered and it was expressionless
A good voice as usual, but he makes this song sound DEAD. No emotion, no sensuality, no nothing. He'd be so unsuitable as a Phantom. If he wants to do more musicals, he should choose roles that suit his singing style = still too operatic. And that's coming from an opera fan.
@SHkiyolove yeah I agree with you, I'm a huge Alfie fan and opera fan, I just can't see him as phantom, the phantom is big in voice and action. Alfie Boe could play Valjean because Valjean kind of sweeps in and out of the story (even though it's about him).
However by putting this on his album it doesn't mean he wants to play phantom, he just likes it. He's not doing as much acting as other phantoms because a studio album is simply a totally different forum to that of a stage production :)
@SHkiyolove I have to disagree, his singing more than captures the mood of this song. I think musical theatre needs to change, no more disregarding the voice in favour of "character", the first prerequisite of any role should be that they can sing like this. Otherwise the musical theatre scene will end up being overrun by wannabe pop stars... oh wait... *cough* Nick Jonas *cough*
@thephantom3194 You think so? I didn't think he even understands the meaning of this song from what I could tell from this short clip. He'd have had a better chance with a full version (I didn't buy his CD, so I don't know).
However, I agree with 1 of your points. Music Theatre industry should really cast actors who can sing. But, that's not to say someone with a good voice can play any role even if he/she can't act, because musicals are still plays with stories to tell.
@benjiboi20 He actually did sing that. Look up "colm wilkinson music of the night." He's actually good. I prefer Alfie though. Alfie AND John Owen Jones.
