Honestly I don't know who it is that refuses to fully embrace the gimmick. It could be the writers, or it could be Taker, himself. He might not want to do the gimmick fully anymore.

The undertaker from 2004-now is a hybrid with more mortician than badass, now he's basically the smae hybrid he was from 98 and 99.

To those that have asked, the Under is UNdertaker's direct link to the DArkside. It doesn't hold his powers, perse, but it does sustain him, giving him that nearly unbeatable stature.

The few times he has lost it, it took less effort to beat him. It was through the urn that Paul controlled Taker during their early run, before he started to become more human and less zombie-like.

Lucky for Taker Heyman did not know how to really use it, or Taker would still be under his control. :)
