  • humans and dogs have coexisted for thousands of years, enough for dog intelligence to be adapted for human interaction-a dogs understanding of human comands is key to their survival so they would have to be better than chimps. chimps are not stupider, on the contrary- chimps will often solve problems by themselves by first principles-this was how chimps developed tool use; learning from first principles and combinatronics of these principles into methods. chimps can analyse better.

  • in this test i always wonder if the dogs sense of smell is key to success, or do chimps have the same scent tracking abilities.. (?)

  • It's a fraud, the dogs are trained and the chimp its not.... just in a case..... every trained animal could do the same as dogs , of course cats, horses, pigs etc.... Why some people trying so hard to proof that dogs are genius and all the other animals just dump. DNA test show that humans share same dna with chimps 98,5% , orangutans 96,7, cats 90% , dogs 75% , chicken 60%............ but dogs are still the only genius in animal planet for the most of men.

  • From what they showed, there was no evidence of what they were saying. I am hoping they tried multiple tests, like. Not hiding the food in a cup, but giving the dog the food if they chose the cup that they pointed at.

  • @thegraygoo That is called target training. Animals (not just dogs) can be trained to follof a target (finger, target stick) and they are then rewarded.

I don't know if our dogs show learned behaviour or what but they all know that when a human points at something there may be something interesting. They don't understand that when they are very young but get it later. I haven't tested if it is natural for them or have they just learned that if I point at something there may be food.

  • wont work on cats, because, well, they dont give a shit

  • Humans are the dumbest of all the species.

  • In the Top 10 most intelligent animals, dog came 8th....HAHAHAHHAHAH cool..btw..parrot came 7th so cool :)

  • I think its a rhodesian ridgeback

  • what kind of dog is that? the pretty brown/rust colored one there towards the beginning?

  • @OldSchoolSkill

your absolutely right, dogs rely the action-planning to the "leader entity" in the premises

  • los perros saben convivir con la gente los monos no

  • Where's the second part???

  • that dog is sexy. look at these paws, so sharp and clear, wow!

  • CUTEST LITTLE BLACK PUPPY!!! 2:14

  • how about dogs can smell better ,,, idiots

  • Ha, the ape is behind a screen and the dog is not.

  • หมามันดมกลิ่น ถึงไม่ชี้มันก็หาถูกนะคะ XD

  • dogs are a false breed of wolves, parasites on humanity

  • @doggymai20f you must be a cat lady huh

  • well, the dogs go for smell, thus, finding the treat, the human hints are secondary to the response...

put a piece of meat on the cup, and dry dog food under the cup you point, and you shall be disappointed, unless you got a very obedient dog...

  • @drbelli the whole point is that the dog doesn't know where the treat is. won't help if you've got a piece of meat on your cup. this isn't about obedience, it's about human dog communication

  • @drbelli also they scented each cup so you must have poor listening skills.

  • @tayoyoyo

The question @ 1:10: "... why were dogs better than apes?" (ref. to the dog/cup/food exercise )

    - Dogs go for smell, thus, finding the treat, the human hints are secondary to the response.

the narrator said both cups smelling like treat , well, to a human nose, they smell the same... but particles, from the treat are around the cup, by being there simply, plus dragging the cups enhance the SMELL hint.

i listen just fine, you my dear, seem to believe on what the video tells u.

  • @drbelli i bet the scientists didnt even think about that... you are a genius

  • @RupertDanger

i guess they didnt , or, if they did, someone just twisted the facts about dog behavior, aware or unaware of the real facts...

the reason ima party pooper is that, scientists, usually tend to separate the Cosmos into little fragments so they can understand how this and that works... and this is the way the world is for many years, for the time it took, it was good, but i guess we should observe to learn, not to over-think simple facts(dogs senses)

  • @drbelli Nope, when dogs smell something they have to FIND and focus in on it first by sniffing at the air and looking around, they dont just ZOOM right in untill they locate the source of the scent FIRST.

The dogs are clearly responding to the hand signals, which ANYONE who owns a dog trained as an assistant dog, or a dog who is DEAF and trained using hand signals, or an obedience trial dog where hand signals are used extensively- will tell you.

  • @doggiejigs

Ok, first, dogs do not "have to FIND", they crave to, coz its an instinctive mechanism, programmed by nature's own survival rules over long periods of time... (if im wrong, then throw a wet, stinky and scared street cat on the room, and see it the dog will HAVE to do anything u point...)

THE really overall REASON that dogs obey and serve men, it evolution itself, no need to make experiments over their behavior, and come to limited conclusions , trained dogs arent 1% of the dogs..

  • excellent clip

  • I've grown up with dogs and always known this about them. When I walk towards my shoes my dogs get excited about going for a walk. When I gesture they follow. When I move my hand across the floor my German shepherd touches it with her paw, and I move it again and she reaches over and touches my hand again. When we're out of the house my dogs are far more likely to do bad things like root for garbage. My lab loves to sit on the window seat, but as soon as I come in he jumps off and looks guilty.

  • Why could dogs follow the pointing? Perhaps they were following the pointing. However, did anyone consider that their acute sense of smell could override the simulated treat smell to lead them to the correct cup, rather than the pointing finger?

  • The scientists are factoring out that dogs have a good sense of smell. They could simply be sniffing out the treat.

  • @klogs86 it mentions in the video they put a treat in each of the cups.

  • The chimp was pointing at the right treat the second time before she pointed.... hmmmm

  • what if the person turns around but has eyes open? or turns with eyes closed.

  • i wonder if the people in this experiment ever tried pointing to the empty cup and seeing if the dog would follow. True, both cups were scented, but isn't it possible that a dog could smell the difference between a scented empty cup and a scented cup with food? I mean, they can smell cancer.

Does anybody know if the researchers tried pointing the wrong cup to see if the dogs would still follow?

  • @maximum411 no doubt they tried that, that is a STANDARD protocol in something like this experiment.

The bait was used only as the reward and to keep the dog interested and alert.

Absolutely dogs respond to pointing, pointing is just one of many hand signals, and herding dogs respond to hand signals, various whistles, and all AKC show dogs who are trained to work in utility or obedience trials are trained to respond to hand signals.

  • @doggiejigs

key word is "trained": they were trying to see if dogs naturally followed human signals

and you can't just assume they tried the empty cups, although I hope they did

  • @maximum411 They were trying to see if dogs were intelligent enough to figure out what pointing MEANS and then act upon the visual clue, they were and did, the chimps were not and didnt.

Dogs being highly trainable indicates intelligence, whether an assistant dog is trained or an obedience trial champion was trained in the use of hand signals or whatever is irrelevant, what IS relevant is the fact they are intelligent enough to figure it out- problem solving and finding solutions.

    Watch the NOVA

  • what amazes me is that the scientist at the Max Plank institute are astounded by what just about every dog owner in the world already knows and every single dog trainer use. wonder what else would amaze them, water coming out of a faucet when the twisty thing on it is turned counter clock wise?

  • Where's the second part of this video?! Looks interesting.

  • feed a dog some penut butter! its hilarious!!!!

  • maybe dogs could smell the food

  • @briannloo Hi,

I've played this'trick' with dogs, yes they would smell the food, but it was said that the cups already smelt of treats.

I am a behaviourist, dogs pick up on facial clues and finger pointing easily. Dogs that have been bred for c working with people (Collies;GSD's etc) are better at following a pointed finger than a terrier that would be expected to go ratting etc without instruction. Dogs can read our facial expressions easily as that's the wat they comunicate with each other.

  • that's stupid. the monkey is in a box, unable to smell or anything. and when its with the dog, they point to the one. fail science?

  • @sSugaStars Hi, smell had nothing to do with the dog finding the right one, they said both cups had been scented with treats.

There have been lots of tests about dogs understanding pointing and they do understand. Dogs that have been bred to workwith people for centuries understand more than dogs like terriers that would go off ratting on there own. Ive tried the pointing with several different breeds, it is interesting.

  • Bad dog!

  • dogs r man's best friend

  • Have they ever cosidered that, in this case, the chimp spent its life in a cage with minimal human contact, while the dog is always with its owner? The dog will obviously learn how to understand us if its always with us, while the chimp doesn´t understand us because it barely spends any time with us.

  • @animalobsessed1 you dont KNOW the chimps used in the tests were just locked in cages 24/7, a 5 minute clip doesnt say either way.

  • im sorry but all animals are intelligent. My gerbil knows the sound of the treat bag, she gets annoyed if i dont let her out for a run, she will chew the bars and display behaviour indicating she is annoyed. They learn fast that if you catch them in a tube to be put back in their cage, not to go into the tube so willingly. They also have likes and dislikes, she knows she wont get attention when i go to bed, when the lights are out she heads straight to her bed.obviously not as dumb as ppl think

  • @cokerainbows Yup. All animals know and understand far more than we think. I think you'd like the book "When Elephants Weep: The Emotional Lives of Animals"

  • simple you are not watching me lol

  • This explains why many dogs break the 'stay' and return too quickly. Many handler look down at the feet which is a HUGE cue to the dog!

  • brother over friend I see lol 1:22

  • OMG let's just say that dogs are like us, smart little fellas!

  • Just asking, are the dog's Mental Maturity is equal , lesser, or higher than toddlers? Just asking since i'm a bit curious

  • @wiredlord alotttttttt higher

  • Lolz I always tell my dog to get things and do things by pointing. And now its something amazing? xD

  • That girl that tested the dogs intelligence looks like Simon from America's Got Talent

  • interesting

  • they get it from the wolf. Pack animals that use a shit load of body language. Good old canines:)

  • Beautiful ridgeback

  • "God: Hidden Science" - Google it!

  • I cannot fucking believe that these so called scientists get payed to do what they do, any dog behavourist can tell you that dogs communicate in great detail just using eyes and bodylanguage, they are definitly not looking beyound themselves and seeing things from our perspective as the video claims, they just do that naturally with there own kind, so they are not adapting to human behaviour, we are inadverdantly adapting to theirs by communicating with our eyes without sound.

  • Nose eyes ears, that is the order in which dogs communicate. First they smell, and they can smell you from the other side of the room, then they look at your eyes, if only for a second to get a sense of how dominant or submissive you are to try to get an idea of what they can expect fom you, then they use ears last. IE; listening to you speaking to them.

  • @skinnydogkew

Many people often wonder why scientists (or to be more precise - researchers) get paid (or rather, get grants) to conduct their designs.

Part of this confusion has to do with the way "science" is disseminated to the general public, which largely consists of idiot..

Videos like this are typical of the way subject matter is delivered to the public. It's cute + entertaining but it omits much of the rigour, experimental, and statistical control needed to ensure proper results.

  • @Joe22c That iswithout a doubt the best reply I've ever recieved. Thank you.

  • "It's cute + entertaining but it omits much of the rigour, experimental, and statistical control needed to ensure proper results"

Incorrect assumption based on a 5 minute clip, this is not the ONLY one, NOVA produced a DVD documentary on this too that is far more in depth and tested.

Dogs are simply smarter and more in tune with humans than primates, they can even read facial expressions and eye movement- both of which I have easily seen proof of with my dogs over the years.

  • From wich tv episode is this? Many thanks

  • scientists never has a Idea about the great universe...

the universe is borned by ..? thats imposible for scientists

  • it is possible, if you show how its made, and desing a repeatable experiment to prove it. we are waiting.

  • @snylekkie

    God made the universe

  • Alright, its your hypothesis, you have a right to say that. But if you want to convince a logically and empirically thinking person, you have to design an experiment. Let's say: if God made the Universe, then we can find some traces of him, trails etc. Allright. So far so good. The experiment could be: take any piece of matter, it will bear the mark of God.

Now. I take a piece of matter and find nothing. I can explain all matter in terms of physics, ALL matter. No exceptions.

    Give me another.

  • Dogs can feel emotions. Thats a proven fact.

  • well chimps may be smarter but its just if u make the same test on a human (and u point the correct cup) the human may not trust u (or he may will if he knows u are making a test on him) that doesnt mean dogs are smarter

  • Dogs are more intelligent!

    it has a Great Intelligence

  • Monkeys are animals LOl..

    We are human xD

  • Humans are animals.

  • No we aren't animals

  • How aren't we animals? We have souls like animals do. Plus were in the same family as primates.

  • I dont know.. i feel i dont have a soul like a animal . I think scientists thought humans are animals

  • well just to let you know, humans fall under a sub-species of apes. We're not apes, though. We just fall in the same species. Kinda like dogs are different then wolves.

  • Then what are we... plants? rocks?

  • normal humans...

    we didnt born by animals

  • Normal humans ARE animals, there are four orders in which elements organize in a complex manner: animals, minerals, plants, fungi... every living being made out of meat are animals... are you made of meat?? or youre made of wood?? if you are made of wood maybe you are a plant... which wouldnt surprise me at all cause plants dont have any brains.

  • Ok then where born the big bang¿?

where born the first animal? ( your thinks)

where born the first cells ?

    where born the first cell?

one think needs to have a creador..!

    without a creador its imposible!

  • I wasnt talking about creation or religion, i have nothing to say about that. Humans are made of animal cells, hence we are animals. Where did carbon and oxygen came from, i dont know, i dont like talking about things i dont know, so i dont...

  • XD lol.. me neither..

    children cannot believe about it..

but people teach them and they learn

  • ok i will ignore all the mistakes you made in these few sentences and go on to a suggestion: READ DARWIN YOU BUTTHEAD!

and btw what makes you think that everything needs a "creator" (referring probably to some higher power with the purpose to create) in order to exist?

  • @Reyneeru

youre all doing blablabla everything needs a creator and shit

soo.. who created god then ?

  • @slissertje

when u meet him.. u will know who creates him

    in this moment nobody knows

  • @chamulindo Stop spreading bad science.... The sun is complex, it contains lots of hydrogen and helium. Black holes contain an unknowable amount of elements, I'd say they'r pretty complex. What about plasma? Bacteria aren't nessecarily a fungus, but we still don't know everything about them. Plants preform quantum entanglement at levels we've never seen anywhere else, who is to say they aren't smarter than we are? Your post makes a lot of assumptions.

  • @TalkSikMusic Bacteria aren't necessarily a fungus? For someone who's trying to sound intelligent, you're doing a very poor job. Fungus and Bacteria are completely separate - There's no 'necessarily' about it. Go have a look at the tree of life if you don't believe me.

  • @TalkSikMusic That's so hilarious! You absolutely did not make the slightest sense.

  • @TalkSikMusic I agree. I'm of the opinion that every creature is intelligent to suit their lifestyle. So judging intelligence doesn't work by human standards when considering amazing things many animals can do that we cannot, like migrating birds being able to "see" and read the earth's magnetic field. And human intelligence is both helpful and detrimental to our species. We can organize large groups of people to build shelter, but we can also build atomic bombs.

  • @chamulindo Oh so true! I applaud you for explaining that to all of the people out there that don't believe it. Thank you!

  • @chamulindo of course humans are animals, agreed! it's just an idea from church and religion (bible!) to divide humans and animals which is bull imho! :)

  • new science has proved that everydog is as smart as a 2 year old kid. while monkeys are as smart as a three year old kid. the smartest dog race (border collie) is as smart as a two and a half year old kid and can understand over 235 words. regular dogs can understand 150 words.

a smart cat however is as smart as a half year old kid and a regular cat is as smart as a newborn.

    (sorry for my english)

Note: the information is not exact! but pretty close though.

  • a two year old british boy has become the youngest person accepted into Mensa having the IQ the same as albert einstein and steven hawkins ... wow dogs are smart hahaha

  • well there was a border collie who could learn almost 400 hundred words.

  • great video;))

  • nice boobs you have...

  • LOL!!! Thanks, but that's not me... :)

  • ..what? but you are a girl, right?

..why a girl have another naked girl on her background?.. Hahah I think I like your exotic behavior... lol

  • LOL, you are funny...yes I'm a girl :)) I just have that pic becouse I like it, I don't like girls in "that way" I just like the picture... and that girl looks very sexy, the hole picture is very sexy. :)

  • @molinobeer you are primitive, congrats ;P

  • @shairaptor

    shut up dyke

  • @molinobeer nope
