He's premature? But he isn't even down in his pasterns, is fully covered in hair from muzzle to hoof, is very steady on its legs and coordinated (for a newborn), and is able to nurse very well. Did you have the breeding dates of the mare to determine the length of gestation? Birth weight, in my 20 year breeding experience, is a poor indicator of full or pre-term.

one of the foals at the farm im working at now... he was a premie.... born just under a month early... now he is strong, healthy, and quite rambunctious! I didnt see the mare foal him but i was told it was pretty scary, and i thank god that both mare and foal survived! This guy is adoreable! He deserves a long, happy life after such a rough start....

Mares showing signs of bagging up early (2months early or more) should be checked for placentitis (infection of placenta/uterus etc) antibiotics may help prolong the pregnancy to getting a viable foal
