Here in Australia we call them woomeras, but they are used to throw full sized spears rather than smaller darts/arrows as they extend the range and force of a spear-throw. They're usually made from wood but a femur of a kangaroo or any larger animal can be split length-ways, modified and used to the same effect.
Aboriginies all over the nation used them with only minor variations in methods and materials used in construction.

great video charles, looks like a great hunting weapon, i have seen these before becuase my brother has made some, i may have to try it myself.
