Stock markets, rent, mortgages and credit are nothing but control tactics used to control you. I feel like it's not that people WANT to become workaholics, but that we're FORCED to do more outside of work in order to keep our jobs and maintain a manageable workflow.
The illusion of productivity gain via meaningless tasks is a staple driving force for bad management. When was the last time you really felt like you were doing "something important for the improvement of your company and your career" vs "something you need to do, so just do it alright"?
Isn't it ironic that in America staying stressfully busy is a great source of pride? What about setting up your life so that aside from work, you are relaxed and have little that requires your attention? Why do we find that shameful?
