  • Very cool. Did you guys shoot that video out in Apple Valley? I think I recognize that area.

  • @AllenRockwell

It was out at Rabbit dry lake bed

  • why don't you try to sell it to Yves Rossy because he's using 4 jet cat turbines at the moment, maybe you could save him some weight and give him a lot of additional thrust.

  • @Pahrnia1 These would double his flight time, the liability to sell this for maned aircraft is a little scary, although I have been considering an ultralight with two of these.

  • Thats amazing. I hope you get some funding, there ought to be some kindof market for an engine like that.

  • @highvoltagefeathers Thank you, you would thick there would be a market for it, trying to make it inexpensive is the problem.

  • i would love to own a turbofan engine like that.... although id probably put it into a nicer airframe hah and in line with the cg so all the thrust could be used without any strange tendancies

  • @Chooie1337 Would you really put an engine that's never flown in a nice more expensive airframe?

  • @killerbee2T that engine has flown... so long as it was still experimental though i would of course do operational testing in a cell to make sure it doesnt blow up or something and by nicer airframe i mean something that would make better use of the engines power it doesnt have to look pretty it just has to fly good

  • @Chooie1337 I really would like to get a nice big F-16 or a bigger warthog, the engine has 16 flights on it so I guess its time.

  • @killerbee2T well f-16 would sound strange with a turbofan on an a-10 it would be quite fitting i personally would find a certain style of plane i wish to fly and either build or find something that would fit my desired flight characteristics

  • @Chooie1337 F-16's use turbo fans also, there just low bypass, but the A-10 would show the engines off better.

  • @killerbee2T thats very true on showing them off more i do like the way a-10 handles as well ive also thought it would be interesting to may toy weapons to put on an rc a-10 like some kinda dumbfire rocket with a small black powder charge for example to resemble hydra rockets

  • @Chooie1337 Yeah, and the A-10 is more forgiving with that big wing

  • does this thing have turbines?

  • @delts It has two turbine wheels

  • fun stuff.

  • It weighs 7 pounds, the compressor is centrifugal, the rest is axial, I have the two turbine wheels cast in inconel.

  • How much does the engine weigh? I assume it's axial flow (as it's very slender), and then I wonder if you machined blisks or do you have discs + individual fans? Very nice work either way, and I hope it brings you some success!

  • So how is the fan spool stet up? Is it designed like a twin spool turbofan? (Two Shafts?) It looks like a mini CF-6-50

  • @Helicopterpilot16 yup, two counter rotating shafts, just like the full sized

  • very nice Work !!!!! :) i love this engine !!!!

  • @Logoflieger Thank you

  • Okay so its a miniature turbine fan, so?

  • @XpensiveHobbies So you are jealous?

  • It would be greatly appriciated if you could do a presentation video of this engine.

  • OH I thought this was a real engine when I clicked on it! :) Good video!!

  • @jtcool9 LOL, well this is a real engine too, just much smaller

  • @killerbee2T Yea

  • amazing.. what's the basic principle in transfering the power from the main shaft to the other one with the large fan? And if its a direct drive, does that mean youre spinning the fan at 130k rpm?

  • @absolutsoju You slow the flow down from the main turbine by expanding it and send it through a power turbine, in this case 1/3 the RPM

  • @killerbee2T So in the end it's a two-stage turbine with the low pressure one driving the fan? Marvellous

  • @zappafiner Correct

  • @fanexpert Yes it would help, but this project was just about getting stick time on this engine for my Harrier. I have thought about the spinner but I would need to make a new hub for the fan to incorporate the spinner, maybe in time.

  • is the fan driven directly or there is a tranny?

  • @Markitos203 Direct drive, I think a transmission would reduce reliability.

  • thats sick very cool wish i would be able to do that but theres no space here in holland

  • @killerbee2T ...... Very good job! i would like to know where did you get information on how to design and build the fan? thanks for the help.

  • This is intriguing. You should contact companies that develop UAV's to see if any of their designs could utilize this technology.

  • Terrific work! Beautiful engine!

  • @TWA717

    Thanks

  • @TWA717 Thank you

  • Is this the lake bed at Lucerne Valley? Looks just like it.

  • @wun1gee It's rabbit dry lake bed, cool place!

  • @killerbee2T Lol that's awesome. I used to live in Barstow and now travel often between 29 Palms and Barstow on 247, drive across this lake all the time and always think about how awesome a flying sight it'd be.

  • do you have plans for this somewhere? awesome little beast!

  • @thatoneguy99100 Thanks I am in the middle of making the drawings but with everything I have on the go its not happening to quickly, I am also considering patenting it so its probably not a good idea part with them if they ever get finished.

  • @killerbee2T Could you please at least give us a guide to experiment on our own? I'd like to build something similar, although probably not quite as perfect as yours :)

  • @drminnaar There is a book by Thomas Kemps on micro turbines, this is a good place to start.

    Traplet Publication published this book

  • Awesome! I've been waiting for a turbofan in this size. Would make a *great* engine for large scale fighter model airplanes. Plus that rushing sound is so much better than the usual turbojet whine!

  • I need this in my life :D

  • No dislikes.. Keep it that way killerbee2T. :D

  • That is just awesome. I've been waiting for someone to make an r/c turbofan engine. I'm actually planning to build one soon and this video makes me even more excited to make one. It sounds a lot better than those r/c turbojets and would look amazing on an r/c airliner like a 747. Nice job.

  • screw reduction gears, anyone could do it that way, just take a off the shelf turboprop and replace the prop with a huge ducted fan. What this guy did is amazing and exactly as they do in real life. I wouldn't be suprised if he starts getting calls from military representatives.

  • What software did you use to design the diffuser....? How did you fabricate it.... is it made of carbon fibre?

  • @1989musik

the diffuser is machined aluminum, or do you mean the stator?

  • so did you put reduction gears for the main front blade?

  • @pereduranofcourse

Sorry I just figured out how to respond to comments. This engine uses two shafts no gearboxes.

  • @killerbee2T okay, cos i've heard that for better performance, a turbofan that has a 1:4 reduction gives better results

  • @pereduranofcourse

Generally its the turbo props that have gear reductions, just recently turbo fans are starting to use gear drive fans, they increase fuel consumption by 12%

  • @killerbee2T wierd... the BAe 146 engines have gear reduction and they are from the 1980... But nevermind, it would be too complicated in small scale and really nice job, i'd pay anything to have one of those!

  • @pereduranofcourse

That would not be to hard to do, in fact I am considering doing just that to one of these engines, do you know what the gear ratio is in the BAE motor?

  • @killerbee2T the front fan of the AFL 502 spins at 7000 and the rear low pressure fans and compressor at 20000, do the easy maths ;) p.s. where do you live?

  • @pereduranofcourse Los Angeles, thanks for the info

  • @killerbee2T Dammit, 6000 or more miles away...

  • @pereduranofcourse where do you live?

  • @killerbee2T originally spain now UK

  • There are 3 more of these engines under way, a 747 would be cool!

  • Killer engine, have any small twins in mind (scale 737, A310) to mount onto? That would be spectacular! Great design, good luck!

  • Turbo jet does not have a fan on it, and higher exhaust speeds

A turbo fan has more thrust due to it moving much more air.

  • whats the difference between a turbojet an turbo fan?

  • yeah that's a good idea, make yourself a real A10, without the guns and rockets of course. :D

  • it is marvelous , give us some more to see!

  • I WANT one!!!!

  • Yes that's mine also.

  • Thanks for the compliments, yes this is real, if you look from 19 to 23 seconds you will see the fan blades, this is the real deal.

  • Very cool sound and a nice looking engine! Good work!

  • Ahhh you really need to put up a website for this engine. Very nice job...you're very talented. Great job!!!

  • smooth landing

  • WEll done!!!! Incredible.

  • All I can think of is WARTHOG!!!!$#@&#$ COMPLETELY AWESOME!!!!!

  • WOW...Incredible!!!! Didja hear that thing!!!!! COMPLETELY AWESOME!!!!!!

  • Nice. I'd like two on a really big A-10 model.
