Well, I am happy with a round that I know will expand and not over penetrate in any self defense situation. That's why I want to see what a 1oz 12ga wax slug does to denim and ballistic gell!
i wish people would stop with the under penatration ..i do not need a round that go's on through the walls of my house and into a person outside....its best to have a round that can dump ALL the energy in the first 7-8 inch range..no one will be shooting through glass or doors ....this and extrem shock are great rounds ..i have the air freedom in the gun that is with me and my wife at all time..i know it works and i will not over penetrate and kill some one walking down the street..
this is basically Hornady Critical Defense FTX in a different color and packaging, hence the less than 12" penetration, which is marketed toward the civilian shooter (shoot-n-scoot)
@POIFarmer THANK YOU. I completely agree. Just waiting for the first court case where somebody actually uses it in self defense. I could hear the lawyer now... "You mean you bought "zombie" ammo that you used to shoot my underprivileged client?"
@00oBladeo00 It's a euphemistic expression of a breakdown of society where you may have to defend your home against say, rioters or a tyranical government. It's alot easier to visualize shooting a zombie than an actual human.
@jwash3rd Well, i know and maybe that's just marketing, but... I feel it's like riding people's paranoia and fueling it... I'd stick with something like "critical defence", "HD", etc. sometimes i see things and discussions about "zombies" knowing that they mean human aggressors but with such... details and seriousness it's almost scary to me. Don't know if you catch my drift...
but wouldn't penetration be bad for scrambling zombie brains? I mean judging from the ballistics gel that expansion would definitely make scrambled zombie brains.
Maybe I'm an old fart with no sense of humour, but I just don't think that things designed to save your life, or the life of someone else, should have such silly names.
@TeflonTron Well, the funny part is it's showing up on some close out shelves already, so if you like Critical Defense you can pick this stuff up cheaper. Some people are buying them as an investment hoping they'll go up in value like the "cop killer" Black Talons.
Ok so I did a little research and looked at what some of the experts said about defensive ammo. In the process of researching this round and several others I found that this line of ammo has had numerous failure to fire and the 357 rounds have actually locked up the action of several revolvers. I won't be using Hornady any more. I selected Corbon DPX loaded with the Barnes copper X bullet. It is extremely impressive. You want deep penetration DPX and Gold Dot are my choices. Thanks for the vid!
Very nice shot placement. The bullet had some very nice expansion but the penetration was not that great. Great video and again your video's are so cool and high quality. Okay, just a quick question, so do you think the SIM-TEST media is comparable to a Zombie head?

In the 9mm it comes with straight brass vs the Custom defense is nickel washed or plated. Some say it aids in lubricity, for me it was a dollar cheaper, and Im fine with brass, then Custom D so I get the 9mm Zombie loads. are any of the other calibers of Custom D nickel too?
Thanks for the great vids. Would you be able to do some tests with semi-jacketed ammo in 9mm? Its the closest thing to expanding ammo that we can use in Europe and I am wondering how much it will deform in gel or other medium. Thanks a lot.
People are talking about zombie and buying guns and bullets and my question is: Who is going to be the zombie? Zombie were people so that means probably you will be one of them. Buying guns doesn't means that you are not going to be infected. Or , are you thinking to be an Armed Zombie?
@tnoutdoors9 Is the FBI 12 in. spec. with or without denim? And if with demin how much? Everyone says my Lasercraft 240 gr. "Oregon trail silver" semi-wadcuters are over kill, but a 45 acp is underkill? I just wanted to know what you thought. Great work. Thanks for the vids.
@KironStrife Yeah, but after the said bite, you will need to cleanse your mouth of every last infected zombie tissue, which is pretty impossible because some will remain in your mouth on a molecular level, and you'll swallow eventually.
Zombies are real! I see them every day. Watching American Idol and The Young and the Restless. Not sayin' we should shoot them, but they can be dangerous if you reach for their Cheetos
Are these for real? If they are, it's funny that even the proper ammo companies are buying into this whole 'zombie apocalypse' thing. It is a myth you know!
Check out RBCD platinum plus ammunition 45 A.P.C.H 90gr over 800ftlb! BEWARE fastest way to find out if your 45acp pistol is crap. The gel would be a lot better clear and the gel goes back into it's shape to a point and were not able to see the hydro dynamics or call it hydro shock wave. I've never seen with color in gel like that.Get A 10mm for C.C.G if your it to going so deep or killing 2 birds with 1 stone.
FBI requirements do not apply in this case. Zombies have soft, decayed skin and tissue, so the manufacturer places less of a premium on penetration in the case of zombie defense ammo.
@zmizusawa I 100% agree. I'm not shooting through car doors, pine board etc during a personal defense encounter with a short barreled gun. To discount a bullet because it lacks 2 inches is silly. Isn't that why we carry multiple rounds and a spare mag?
Everyone talks about under penitration. A human torso is only so thick. I rather have a bullet stop at 10" and transfer all its energy to the target, than penitrate through, wast its energy, and risk penitrating through the wall.
I agree. But I think the FBI idea is that you may not be shooting straight on; you might be shooting from the side & have to go thru an arm before torso. Or a cop may have to shoot thru some obstruction before he hits the body. So I guess they had rather hit & penetrate the body significantly despite obstructions, tho that means an unobstructed straight on shot will go thru the body & come out.
Why do you want more penetration? If your only shooting headshots as you would be with the zombiemax more penetration would only make the bullet pass though the head and maybe wound or kill any human standing behind the zombie.
Just 2 questions. One reason I don't carry Hornady CD is that I'm concerned it won't penetrate glass if I happened to be in a scenario where I needed to. Do you think my concerns are valid?
Also, if it's possible could you please please please try the Magtech First Defense and/or the Magtech FD Justice in your Sim-Test? I would love to see that.
Unless your shooting 500 pound fat people with a thickness of several feet of fat. A few inches will kill somebody. Head or chest shot more then a foot of penetration will almost always over penetrate. I guess there is just a lot of fat people to shoot where you live. lol It only takes a few inches to enter most peoples chests and about a half inch to a inch enter the head. Unless they have fat heads.
I bought some of these for the novelty of it but I wont buy anymore. I'll rather get the Hornady Critical Defenses which are pretty much the some ammo with plated brass.
I dunno, Rambo had this crap that he stuffed into an arrowhead. One shot, 50 foot bridge vaporized. That's what you want for the green tip in this load, the Rambo vaporizer insert. When Joe Cool is in front of me mumbling brains, i want a load that will make his head just kinda disappear. Just my two cents but your zombie mileage may vary.
I doubt it, his fur his too thick. Plus, Bigfoot has started an aggressive weight lifting routine. I went outside the other day and my Jeep had been moved 25 feet.
@tnoutdoors9 Just to add to this. A friend and I have been loading some 7.62x54 rounds really hot just for Bigfoot, and it seems his fur might be a natural carbon fiber.
@tnoutdoors9 If I am not mistaken, the heavier, slower 230 gr critical defense offers superior penetration with the expansion. I think it had the best overall results in your tests? Does zmax come in 230?
Another great video. Impressive expansion but I agree. I carry the .45 everyday and I too am a fan of heavy for caliber. There's just more momentum behind it.
once again fantastic vid and love the sense of humor. Given the reputation for 45 ACP to over-penetrate from short-barrels (in standard loads) I'm thinking this might be a perfect load from say a Kahr PM45. I'm always looking for excuses to pick-up a new gun... and this vid is just the ticket! My wife will hate you.
Wonder if you had a squib load. On Hornady's website (the .45 CD page) they have a picture of the .45 Critical Defense in ballistic gel, which they claim is behind "heavy clothing" penetrating to 13.5 inches. Not challenging your results, just saying.
I'm thinking either a variance in the gel composition or thread count/weight on the denim. My gel was at the low end spec, they could have been on the high end. The denim I use is close to IWBA spec; it is consistent from one test to another. My denim sources were not consistent when I did wetpack testing.
@huntwithairguns Technically yes, but I've also heard it refer to accidentally under-powered loads (factory mis-loading) in common usage, from several different sources.
Epic ending.

Why do you want more penetration? If your only shooting headshots as you would be with the zombiemax more penetration would only make the bullet pass though the head and maybe wound or kill any human standing behind the zombie.

Love your vids! Been following for a long time.

That was funny at thw end of the video " there are no such this as...... SLASH

If you're not doing any more Zombie Max testing I guess we won't have to pitch in to get you some green SIM-TEST media.
The ending was quite a surprise! Are you un-dead now?

And who is the zombie certification bureau? What is their testing regime?
dcviper985 1 month ago
Unless your shooting 500 pound fat people with a thickness of several feet of fat. A few inches will kill somebody. Head or chest shot more then a foot of penetration will almost always over penetrate. I guess there is just a lot of fat people to shoot where you live. lol It only takes a few inches to enter most peoples chests and about a half inch to a inch enter the head. Unless they have fat heads.
BrooklynXT1 1 month ago
@BrooklynXT1 Perhaps it was meant to shoot fat zombies!

Great test, great expansion, but I agree I dont like the 185g and will stick with 230.

I'd really like to see a test of Hornandy Critical Duty, those are supposed to go above and beyond FBI standards, wonder if they really do.

would this work on bigfoot ?????
Blk05titan26 1 month ago 8
@Blk05titan26
I doubt it, his fur his too thick. Plus, Bigfoot has started an aggressive weight lifting routine. I went outside the other day and my Jeep had been moved 25 feet.

@tnoutdoors9 Great, now Bigfoot is stealing cars...
WarHammer1911A1 1 month ago
@tnoutdoors9 i also heard he started wearing a bullet proof vest.
TheDigieagle 1 month ago
@tnoutdoors9 Just to add to this. A friend and I have been loading some 7.62x54 rounds really hot just for Bigfoot, and it seems his fur might be a natural carbon fiber.

Not surprised given the light bullet. Just a gimmick.

but zombies do not wear denim hats! but i understand for the consistency for your tests the denim is needed.
xboxblows 1 month ago
@tnoutdoors9 If I am not mistaken, the heavier, slower 230 gr critical defense offers superior penetration with the expansion. I think it had the best overall results in your tests? Does zmax come in 230?
thatsheepdog 1 month ago
Nice test. Great expansion, but like you said low penetration = low potential for incapacitation. Totally agree about the gimmicky marketing.
VeracityNation 1 month ago
Have you seen the grizzly xtreme it would be cool to see those. You do the best test I've seen keep it up.
Moparking950 1 month ago
Another great video. Impressive expansion but I agree. I carry the .45 everyday and I too am a fan of heavy for caliber. There's just more momentum behind it.
mobowhuntr 1 month ago
once again fantastic vid and love the sense of humor. Given the reputation for 45 ACP to over-penetrate from short-barrels (in standard loads) I'm thinking this might be a perfect load from say a Kahr PM45. I'm always looking for excuses to pick-up a new gun... and this vid is just the ticket! My wife will hate you.

You scared the crap out of me at the end.... =P
Great ammunition test!
bfgguns 1 month ago
Wonder if you had a squib load. On Hornady's website (the .45 CD page) they have a picture of the .45 Critical Defense in ballistic gel, which they claim is behind "heavy clothing" penetrating to 13.5 inches. Not challenging your results, just saying.
irishScott2 1 month ago
@irishScott2
I'm thinking either a variance in the gel composition or thread count/weight on the denim. My gel was at the low end spec, they could have been on the high end. The denim I use is close to IWBA spec; it is consistent from one test to another. My denim sources were not consistent when I did wetpack testing.
tnoutdoors9 1 month ago
@irishScott2 A squib load is when the round is loaded with no powder and the bullet gets lodged in the barrel.
huntwithairguns 1 month ago
@huntwithairguns Technically yes, but I've also heard it refer to accidentally under-powered loads (factory mis-loading) in common usage, from several different sources.

ZOMBIES are real let a meth head or bathsalt nose bleeding brain dead ZOMBIE come at you!!! And then we will talk again if you live.
funnyman1972 1 month ago
The lower penetration depth mite make it safer as a defense round in a neighborhood.
Moparking950 1 month ago
yay I'v been hoping you would make this vid about the z-max .45!!!

Why would you need more then 10 inches penetration?
