Audi's four wheel drive system was at first made for rally, BMW's M3's are made for racing on tracks and not for rally (especially pointing at there rear wheel drive system) .. so i dont even see a point for any discussion.
Hey, as far as i know, B5's never came out with a the biturbo 2.7 in the sedan, only the avant models had that, if you really have the 2.7TT in there i'd like to know how you did it, cause i've got the 2.8 and really wouldn't mind the 2.7TT.

none of these hp measurements are at the wheels, 260 at the crank you gotta figure 20% loss through the quattro drivetrain and whatever is left is the wheel horsepower
quattro is one of the more efficient awd systems. you don't get to take away 20%, try 15. and thats pretty damn simple math. if youre going to try to make a point, dont half ass it.

Well techincally M3's should be compared to RS4's and not S4's (top model in series vs top model in series, where's Tyra at?) A B5 RS4 vs an E46 M3. I put my cash on the RS4 even though it's front heavy.
M3: 333hp and 262lb-ft
RS4: 375 hp and 325lb-ft
Even an S4 with $600 in it will net you 318hp / 382lb-ft with a APR chip on 93 octane.
those M3's never get their horses on the road. those rear wheel driven cars of BMW have a lack of traction, at least in the first few gears. a quattro or a front wheel driven audi with less HP would still kick an M3's ass.
I love Audis. I own one, and I am even throwing all sorts of money at it to make it faster. But I would never say a FWD Audi with LESS power would be better than an M3. And M3 is a VERY able car, and I would never take away from it even though I am biased towards Audi. And to everyone talking about HP, torque is what makes the S4 such a beast, it hits it low and hits it long.
@88annedr Problem: M5 Is part of the FIVE series. It is different. He is correct, RS4 vs M3. If you want to compare M5, you would likely do it to the S6 or RS6. My Audi has never had an issue, because I actually do PREVENTATIVE maintenance. The timing belts just need to be serviced every once and a while.

In my opinion, the Audi looks so weird. It looks unproportioned and ugly. The wheelbase is far short compared to the front and rear. Lancia had Ferrari technology which if why some Lancia motors even say Ferrari on them. Like the Stratos and thema. Lancia was rallying god at first untill the company crashed, not the cars.

I have a E46 M3 and its quicker off the mark and handles better AND looks better and is generally cooler. Dont take my word for it just look at the performance specs

No, stock B5 S4 is 250 hp; even the B5 RS4 was 375 hp.
And how does an Audi handle better than a BMW? I went from a B5 A4 2.8 quattro to an E46 325i and the handling was ten times better in the Bimmer. In the snow or wet Audi has it all over BMW, but in the dry the poor weight distribution of an engine hanging over the front axle means no-fun understeer everywhere unless you're Scandinavian flicking it into every corner.
Cars are all about preference but there are some facts as well...
Also, that 3.0L you speak of (I'm assuming S50B30), makes that power without forced induction.
You can't fairly compare power output between naturally aspirated and turbocharged or supercharged engines, even if you do magically add 200 hp to the Audi's output in your head.
I'm not saying the S4 is in any way bad and I love Audi, but stock for stock, an E36 or E46 M3 will run four rings around it on a track.
P.s. If you like "Beamers" you're talking about motorcycles. A BMW car is a "Bimmer."

When does a heavier car ever handle better than a lighter one? Additionally, my A4 and 325i weighed nearly the same, but the BMW had superior weight distribution.
All you need to do is look up the specifications of the car you're talking about to realize that you, sir, are mistaken.
A Veyron is about the heaviest car I know of and still handles better than most sports/supercars. I know I'm going far to have a point. I'm just saying, there are exceptions where a heavier car outhandles a lighter car. S4 vs. Honda Civic? LMAO, ok I'll stop.
If it was a drag race, rally or whatever I could see the error of my comparison. On a track AWD isn't always best and usually equates to understeer and a heavier car. It COULD handle better, but it depends on the purpose. Audi doesn't make RWD cars, plain and simple, there is no proper comparison, this is as close as it gets between the two manufacturers.
Actually beamers is a word, it just has nothing to do with cars. Secondly, the Audi B5 S4 was only made from 97-01, and it came stock with a reduced output 250 hp twin turbo V6 in America (originally 261 hp). They then switched to the V8 for the B6 & B7 S4 which puts out 340 hp stock. Even the 2009 RS4 only comes stock with 420 hp. Never the less, the 2.7T was one of the easiest engines to work with. I've seen ones with 450+ hp easy. What I am really trying to say is, think before you post!
I love Audi's. Apparently you don't love them as much as me. Stock B5 S4 is 260hp, 295lb-ft. I am pretty sure the stock turbos on an S4 (Ko3) don't even push enough air for 450 hp, unless you running them at 26 PSI, which is way beyond what they were designed for, also making top end power weak.
@forza267 Depends on your definition of no problem. I doubt a K03 could hold 25PSI above a certain rpm without spinning beyond its intended safety thresholds. Thus causing reliability issues.With a turbo spinning so fast to supply said levels of PSI in relation to volume, IATs are bound to shoot through the roof and cause pinging or detonation. Meth or race gas become the solution to combat this, but in reality...a larger turbo is required.Pushing a turbo beyond its limits is asking for trouble.
Audi hasn't made cars for rallying in a while... they've moved on to other things like Le Mans and touring car championships.
They still have Quattro AWD so it's ok for rally but this isn't what the S4 is for. They're built to rival the M3 on a track.
And Audi wasn't born as a rally car, they just competed in Rally because they came up with the 1st full time AWD system and no one would beat them for years.
I hope for his safety this guy has a roll cage cuz that'd be one nasty ass crash.

Audi used to have rubbish AWD but the new S4 changes everything. (2009 model)
There is a thing I don't understand tho. Higher spec, more expensive Audis like S5, S8 and that RS6 rocketship are still stuck with the obsolete quattro that was made for safety rather than dynamic driving. So the best handling S audi model is actually the cheapest one. (Upcoming RS4 could also be that good)
Also, BMW has very AWD. Even their SUVs can smoke some sports cars.
I agree with you! But there are older AWD Systems that are very good, even if they are from the stone-age. The AWD system from the Urquattro and S1, S2 are great! - great to handle and great to drive.
The newer systems are not so good, compaired with other one (Bmw, Mitsubishi Evo, Subaru wrx sti, Skyline GTR or Lamborghini Murcielago, or Porsche)
but the most dynamic AWD system comes from the Mitsubishi Evo (it is the same as they use for Rally Cars)
If you really want a more sporty ride, open the fuse box below the steering wheel at the left side and take out the EPD fuse(s) and relay(s) which protects your ABS, ESP, etc.
But I wouldn't recommend it though.
Or try something more light and sporty, like an S4 or an RS4.
The new S4 has a driveline similar to that of Acura, but uses limited slip differentials.
that is an awd car and that is drifting. do you not hear him on the case when he's sideways... if you had your e brake on while accelerating you would have an out of control motion. e brake is a big part of drifting bud. he went sideways while accelerating for a good period of time.
lol..kinda funny how people are arguing over it being a B5 or not. B5s were the chassis and body type for the 4 series Audis (A4, S4, RS4) from 96-01(02 for the S4, and with a face lift in 99.5). Then from 02-05.5 is the B6, then from 05.5-08 is the B7. Audi just announced the B8. But bottom line, that's a B5 S4.

In my opinion, the Audi looks so weird. It looks unproportioned and ugly. The wheelbase is far short compared to the front and rear. Lancia had Ferrari technology which if why some Lancia motors even say Ferrari on them. Like the Stratos and thema. Lancia was rallying god at first untill the company crashed, not the cars.

No, stock B5 S4 is 250 hp; even the B5 RS4 was 375 hp.
And how does an Audi handle better than a BMW? I went from a B5 A4 2.8 quattro to an E46 325i and the handling was ten times better in the Bimmer. In the snow or wet Audi has it all over BMW, but in the dry the poor weight distribution of an engine hanging over the front axle means no-fun understeer everywhere unless you're Scandinavian flicking it into every corner.
Cars are all about preference but there are some facts as well...

Also, that 3.0L you speak of (I'm assuming S50B30), makes that power without forced induction.
You can't fairly compare power output between naturally aspirated and turbocharged or supercharged engines, even if you do magically add 200 hp to the Audi's output in your head.
I'm not saying the S4 is in any way bad and I love Audi, but stock for stock, an E36 or E46 M3 will run four rings around it on a track.
P.s. If you like "Beamers" you're talking about motorcycles. A BMW car is a "Bimmer."

I am well versed in the "Engilsh" language, unlike yourself. Both words are slang terms: one refers to BMW cars and the other to BMW motorcycles. They are not the same.
When does a heavier car ever handle better than a lighter one? Additionally, my A4 and 325i weighed nearly the same, but the BMW had superior weight distribution.
All you need to do is look up the specifications of the car you're talking about to realize that you, sir, are mistaken.

If it was a drag race, rally or whatever I could see the error of my comparison. On a track AWD isn't always best and usually equates to understeer and a heavier car. It COULD handle better, but it depends on the purpose. Audi doesn't make RWD cars, plain and simple, there is no proper comparison, this is as close as it gets between the two manufacturers.

Actually beamers is a word, it just has nothing to do with cars. Secondly, the Audi B5 S4 was only made from 97-01, and it came stock with a reduced output 250 hp twin turbo V6 in America (originally 261 hp). They then switched to the V8 for the B6 & B7 S4 which puts out 340 hp stock. Even the 2009 RS4 only comes stock with 420 hp. Never the less, the 2.7T was one of the easiest engines to work with. I've seen ones with 450+ hp easy. What I am really trying to say is, think before you post!

I love Audi's. Apparently you don't love them as much as me. Stock B5 S4 is 260hp, 295lb-ft. I am pretty sure the stock turbos on an S4 (Ko3) don't even push enough air for 450 hp, unless you running them at 26 PSI, which is way beyond what they were designed for, also making top end power weak.

@forza267 Depends on your definition of no problem. I doubt a K03 could hold 25PSI above a certain rpm without spinning beyond its intended safety thresholds. Thus causing reliability issues.With a turbo spinning so fast to supply said levels of PSI in relation to volume, IATs are bound to shoot through the roof and cause pinging or detonation. Meth or race gas become the solution to combat this, but in reality...a larger turbo is required.Pushing a turbo beyond its limits is asking for trouble.

Audi hasn't made cars for rallying in a while... they've moved on to other things like Le Mans and touring car championships.
They still have Quattro AWD so it's ok for rally but this isn't what the S4 is for. They're built to rival the M3 on a track.
And Audi wasn't born as a rally car, they just competed in Rally because they came up with the 1st full time AWD system and no one would beat them for years.
I hope for his safety this guy has a roll cage cuz that'd be one nasty ass crash.

I disagree, i owned a Galant VR4, while i'm sure Mitsubishi's AWD has improved since then, IMO it was garbage, it was way too FWD biased.
While the AWD in my Audi of the same era isn't so great either, i much prefer it. I also have a 2002 A4 and it's AWD is perfect IMO.

There is a thing I don't understand tho. Higher spec, more expensive Audis like S5, S8 and that RS6 rocketship are still stuck with the obsolete quattro that was made for safety rather than dynamic driving. So the best handling S audi model is actually the cheapest one. (Upcoming RS4 could also be that good)
Also, BMW has very AWD. Even their SUVs can smoke some sports cars.

I agree with you! But there are older AWD Systems that are very good, even if they are from the stone-age. The AWD system from the Urquattro and S1, S2 are great! - great to handle and great to drive.
The newer systems are not so good, compaired with other one (Bmw, Mitsubishi Evo, Subaru wrx sti, Skyline GTR or Lamborghini Murcielago, or Porsche)
but the most dynamic AWD system comes from the Mitsubishi Evo (it is the same as they use for Rally Cars)

The A6 is way too heavy.
If you really want a more sporty ride, open the fuse box below the steering wheel at the left side and take out the EPD fuse(s) and relay(s) which protects your ABS, ESP, etc.
But I wouldn't recommend it though.
Or try something more light and sporty, like an S4 or an RS4.
The new S4 has a driveline similar to that of Acura, but uses limited slip differentials.

that is an awd car and that is drifting. do you not hear him on the case when he's sideways... if you had your e brake on while accelerating you would have an out of control motion. e brake is a big part of drifting bud. he went sideways while accelerating for a good period of time.

lol..kinda funny how people are arguing over it being a B5 or not. B5s were the chassis and body type for the 4 series Audis (A4, S4, RS4) from 96-01(02 for the S4, and with a face lift in 99.5). Then from 02-05.5 is the B6, then from 05.5-08 is the B7. Audi just announced the B8. But bottom line, that's a B5 S4.
