  • Aww....this video brings back memories of the days when i was in elementry school on field trips to yosemite...sitting in back seat while going through the hills to get into the valley floor. When your a little kid hearing that driver mashing down on the throttle and the little screamer just sings is the best sound track on long field trips. im only 22 years old, and i love the fact that they just keep the old 6-71 and just put autoshift roadrangers in them.

  • it sounds like a porsche 911

  • Sounds awesome. I'd like to run over a prius with it.

  • the best sounding truck motor evented!!!

  • i think what you are noticing is he is not taching it out as much.

  • @trkdrvr16 - True. These engines are made for revving... He had another 1000 rpm left probably....

  • Great vid but what happened at 2:42? After he downshifted and started at a new gear the DD started to whine differently : /

  • @rboffill ...like trkdrvr16 says...just to prove a point ...ya don't have to been on the mat...all the time!...

  • @rboffill What happened is that around 2:35 he shifts into low range by pushing the T shaped lever down on the stick. Then he basically shows what stealth mode sounds like by keeping the RPM's down and short shifting while giving a light throttle before shifting back into high range. Had he given it full throttle in low range it would really be loud because the rpm's would max out very fast.

  • @norton996 Damn. good driver. well that basically sums up lows and highs on the DD's lol

  • ur obviously a cock smoker dude.. I gave up driving 17 years ago and guess what? it's still the honkey ass rednecks like you out there making .35 cents per mile just like over 20 years ago. You are just jealous cause you got gang banged in the ass by Swift and not JB Hunt mofo

  • @RUSSSELLLLL ...WOW...who pissed in your corn-flakes?...dude...

  • who cares if he uses the clutch or not. it gets the rig moving and he obviously knows how to operate it. nuff said..

  • I USED TO DRIVE ONE OF THESE DETROITS EVERYDAY IN A DUMPTRUCK, GOD I MISS THAT SOUND.

  • i wish my alarm clock sounded like this, so i could wake up with a smile and a hard on lol.

  • @tippin100 Thats why i bought a blackberry x)

But i'm sure my parents aren't happy to wake up with trucks sound x)

  • @tippin100 haha good one ..

  • @tippin100 install realplayer, download this video, convert it to audio,go to phonezoo, send it to your phone, and you have yourself a screaming jimmy alarm. hope this helped you

  • Do you still have this truck running?

  • @bj99ful ...yes...

  • What was that beeping in the background?

  • @15Multi The turn signal.

  • am i thankful that these things are gone..lol these ol things made me slam the door on my hand so i would stay mad as hell all day in it..detroits loved to be abused.

  • am i thankful that these things are gone..lol

  • gives me goosebumps

  • when i was 18 i started working for the Georgia DOT and one of the 1st trucks i drove was a 86 gmc brig with a 8 speed and that was the best sounding trucks i ever drove shifter was the same as in this truck

  • Float the gears!

  • When a guy can shift like that, he needs to be called "mister!"

  • Gotta love the sound of a Detroit :D

  • ooooh that rasp

  • more, please!

  • Detroit Deisel marking their territory since 1938 !

  • Whats with all the clutching? .... I see u didnt use it all the time, but it shouldnt have to be touched after first... MAYBE going into 6th.. Or downshifting..

  • @Dwright2020 ...Whats with all the clutching?...nasty habit...

  • @ OK99824 Yes they did LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • that is Shifting!!

  • gotta love the rasp of a 71 series... fell asleep many nights offshore to the soothing sound of these on gensets...

  • why would a semi with a detroit ever need a horn? if a person cant hear that loud bastard comin then they dont need to be driving

  • @swmologger The old 2 stroke just making it's presence known

  • As is called the button with the gear shift in?

  • 11 people went deaf listening to this.

  • @DK99824 Not me, I enjoyed every moment of it; brings back memories of the trucks I grew up with

  • @DK99824 u mean 11 ppl want to get deaf of this

  • detroit diesel have the best sound, really amazing power....

  • @1975vini I say CAT power is the best sounding

  • Thats a truck driving S.O.B right there!!!!!!!!!!!

  • professional driver

  • great truck and great engine. Always loved the sound, even if you can't hear yourself think over it. Lol

  • rustrail3 has it right man ive got an 8v-53 in a 2001 dodge that sounds like a monster

  • I'd hate fr one of those to pull out in front of me lol would take forever to get up to speed cuz of all the gears means shorter gear ratio=slower accel. -_-

  • SOUNDS AWESOMMMMMMEEEEEEEEEEEE

  • Is it Just Me or is he skipping gears

  • @Zeery1 ...just you...RT1110...

  • @Zeery1 it seems like he is skipping the 4th and 5th. Actually he starts at 3rd gear and goes to 10th without skipping.

  • @amusichound yea i know what you mean its nice to talk with someone with a brain or the same taste in stuff i think you were 100% right on what you said when you sent me the letter ps:thanks again for mailing me back!!

  • if i couldnt shift without a clutch id quit

  • @iditurbo ...ya gotta start...before ya can quit........

  • best soundin' engine in the world!!! too bad they were discontinued

  • Ten speed...easiest transmission to shift. Although a little trickier in a Detroit where you had to make the change between gears as quick as possible.

  • we used to have one of these.. loved driving it and the shifting was so smooth. wonder why this guy is wasting time with the clutch?

  • @RUSSSELLLLL ...Sydenham's Chorea...

  • @RUSSSELLLLL R-U- really this stupid? This driver barely touched the damn clutch. You guys that are ranting about how much this DRIVER is using the clutch come off like a bunch of Swift flunkies-- how 'bout it?

  • All we need now is East Bound and Down...if we can hear it haha, god, this things sounds beastly!

  • God Bless America man, God Bless her

  • I'd buy this truck just to wake up my neighbors at 3 am....especially when they keep bugging me to graduate every time I go home lol.

  • i want to find a truck exactly like this one....

  • Dont think Im being rude or anything, but is it me or are Truckers in the USA the only ones to drive a manual shift correctly? lol

  • To bad the new generation of truckers caint drive and shift as smooth as him.

  • The only engine that sounded better than a 6-71 was a flathead Ford V-8 with dual Hollywood mufflers.

  • I fell in love with the sound it makes!

  • WOW knows his truck! Very nice!

  • Old Detroits are like good music!

  • that is the sweetest sounding rig!!

  • ok i been around trucks my whole life this man does a great job ....goood shifting

  • I see at first you are double clutching, then floating. Was there a reason or are you just trying to show both? I have wanted to drive a truck since I can remember, just curious what I need to practice more. I have been driving my 5spd Honda back and forth to work floating the gears for a few weeks, getting it down pretty good now. The double clutch looks a bit harder.

  • its actually easier to float them in a truck. just match the rpms with the speed and start grabbing gears

  • i think i just cummed

  • the sound is so fkn bad ass lol

  • 11 people missed the like button

  • shifting from one gear to the other.. but without a real change of rpm?!? why so many gears in such little gear ratio? do they all really have to be used, or is it possible to skip several gears?

  • @derbaroper If youre pulling a load then you shouldnt skip gears,But if youre with an empty trailer or no trailer at all you can skip

  • @AcaAllertor127 not neccesarily. my grandpa jumps 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. thats on his 1999 International 9200 Cummins N14 Eaton Fuller 10 speed and loaded with 91,000 lbs of chicken feed. its no big deal 4 him. thats how he always drives

  • @AcaAllertor127 my grampa drove lowboy for 20 years and he skiped gears loaded or empy...hell he skiped gears with a 100 thoushond pound yarder on

  • ez a legjobb hang amit hallottam

  • THIS IS AWESOME! Would like 2 see this guy shift a quad box mack?

  • I know it sounds awesome with standard transmission in it, it would sound cool if it had a Alison in it!

  • i hear ya a green grenade is a dying breed

  • i love how when your listening to him and watchen him shift it sounds like your doin 50mph but when you look hes doin like 20 lol

  • you aint got time to text with all shifting lol

  • gad thank you for making this truck lol

  • I JUST HAD AN EAR ORGASUM

  • them where the days .To bad the EPA outlawed them

  • The truck looks great, I seen the other video too. You don't hear the old detroits any more I drove a 8v92 for the company I used to work for about five years ago. It was in a 79 kw w900 two axel but it had the original type exhaust. It sounded nothing like that. I also had a 74 w900 10 yrd that was so loud I used to wear ear plugs while using the jakes. Does any one wonder why old truckers are hard of hearing?

  • @chevrolet402 It's worth going deaf over!!!

  • That noise is cool for 30 seconds. After that, it would make me want to punch myself in the dick.

  • this thing made my day

  • what I learned on driving gotta love the old Detroits

  • we was headin for bear on i-1 0 about a mile outta shakey town i said pigpen this heres the rubberduck ima bout to put the hammer down

  • man those pipes sound so dope is that with the windows rolled up or is that the sound of them in the cab

  • no better sound than a screaming demon

  • "It was the dark of the moon on the 6th of June in a Kenworth haulin logs...a cabover Pete with a reefer on and a Jimmy haulin hogs".

  • Turbo or no?

  • @RustyCarnahan ...no...

  • ahhh, sounds like a nascar! this is real power. love 2 strokers :)

  • he is using the clutch because it is probably his truck and that makes for less wear and tear on the transmission .

  • dasi s so ein geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiillllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr sound :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P :P

  • this is such sweeeeet misic to a guy who helped put out these blocks and heads! detroit diesels sound good in trucks, tractors and terex equipment! they sound good and in farm tractors run very economical!!!

  • why are you using the clutch? i thought most truckers float the gears.

  • @dannyW900 ...prevents paresthesia...

  • @dannyW900 some trannsmissions dont alow that they just grind....my boss's seed trucks are that way you have to use the cluch or u would be stuck in first gear

  • Man, Love a screaming Detroit! I logged a lot of mile hauling mail between Chicago and Cinci in one of those brigadiers. Fisrt tractor I ever drove.

  • Saw a GMC Brigadier low pro car hauler run thru town today pulling a load of new Chevy cars. Sounded just like this taking off from the stop lights on US41. Some of these old beasts are still makin money out there!!

  • I love your "Shifting a 6-71 part 1". My grandfather has a small trucking outfit with mostly GMC 9500 tractors. The inside is just like I remember. I used to get to ride with one of the drivers, who was also a family friend, on local runs. This sure brings back memories.

The best part was when I was young, we lived down the street from the trucking terminal. I used to love hearing those Detroits screaming down the street in the evening when they were all coming in from their runs.

  • i love the sound of that motor

  • God I love to hear these things pull hard!!!

  • @Alrgc2Air If you ran one of them from Texas to California, you'd certainly change your mind about loving the sound!! Take it from an old timer, who's been there. Of,,, and another thing the 238 horsepower caused you to listen a LONG time on the uphills..:)

  • Nice vid, really brings back some memories, first truck i drove was an old GMC general dumptruck with a 6-71 in it. Now i drive a year old T-600 when i'm required to drive truck (my main job is loader op)

  • Music to my ears, Thanks

  • YES SIRRR!!!!!

  • God that thing sounds good, I would be proud to drive that.

  • the 6-71,6-V71,8-V71 and 8-V92,were the preferred power on all the mexican busses for a really long time,i always remember that sound, and the smell of the smoke on them, its so nice no other diesel smells that good, its a lot easier to blow up any other diesel, than to destroy a jimmy

  • There is nothing else in the world that sounds as good as a green grenade !

  • @rusttrail3

A well tuned flathead Ford V-8!

  • @Plainsryder I have a 93 ford mustang gt and it sounds good, but when you are a sapped up truck driver like me nothing else sounds as good as this detroit !!!!!!!!!

  • @rusttrail3

Ha Ha!! I ran a Terex C-6 dozer with a 6-71! I know the feeling.

  • sure there is. a series 60.

  • This reminds me of the old GMC lowboy that my grandpa and dad had that they used to haul their JD 690A trackhoe!! Whether my dad was leaving town or coming back into town, you could always hear the Screamin Detroit about a mile or so outside of town.

  • Best Engine Sounds Ever.

  • My most awesome encounter was with a V16 Detroit in Werner Enterprise Show Freightliner. It's like 2 318's welded together. Twin turbos with 2 6" straight pipes. The engine was so long that they had to extend the hood and frame something like 18". It was a marine engine they put in that truck just to pull the drag car.

  • I think torque was what they were lacking. I know they hated hills or overpasses. I cut my teeth on a 238 inline 6, and 318 V8's. I heard that the bigger detroits had a lot more power. I did drive a Super V 92 for a while. That was a turbocharged and supercharged V6. It wasn't that bad. It would run with the "MOST" big cam cummins.

  • i agree

  • that sound is better than sex

  • Damn I miss those old screaming Detroits. They had no power but that scream would keep you awake anyway. And dependable engines too.

  • You say they don't have much power? I'm curious, how do they compare to say a modern 4 stroke diesel? Do they just have a lot less torque or something?

  • grind em .

  • My work had a 74 international tow truck that had a 671 and 13 speed I loved upshifting at 2200 and downshifting at 1800 I miss that old 2 stroke sound

  • Sweet sound! I love the way the shift tower bushings are worn and it just falls into gear, not like the trucks these days.

  • I used to drive one of these for a construction company with an 8 speed, I miss it hearing this video.

  • Now thats old school. Hands down coolest truck video on the tube. You have to have driven one of those to really appreciate them. Miss those old trucks.

  • Oh yeah, like a pos cavalier could sound anything like this, LOL!!!

  • sounds like my cavilier with no muffler

  • my mother wouldnt be happy hearing that early in the morning

  • Sounds fantastic, go GM

  • Never get tired of this sweet sound!

  • That's a beautiful sound

  • Comment removed

  • Why in hell would ya do that?Thats the best part!

  • It should be taken into consideration that these engines DO NOT HAVE A TURBO 90% of the time nor do they have modern electronics you really are comparing apples to oranges when you compare these engines to a "modern diesel" if you compare them to a n/a diesel with mechanical fuel injection you'll see they really aren't all that bad as far as fuel economy and horsepower are concerned.

  • ...based on fact ...or experience?...head mechanic @ 20...keep up the good work...

  • fact AND experience.we have 3 forklifts and 8 dump trucks with 6-71 detroits.they all have turbos.the one thats an owner op has twin turbos.most (87%) of the bus ones had turbos.shit the ones we have where i live have nothing but turbos.

  • Nevermind the fact that there's no such thing as a"naturally aspirated" Detroit. If they don't have a turbo, they're supercharged. Sometimes, they've even got both.

  • They now advertise turbocharged engines. Who would have thought. 1st rule to drive a detroit is to slam your hand in the door two or three times so you get mad and then when you drive the hell out of them, they perform.

  • @silverfox605 Man, thats exactly what my dear ol dad used to say. he drove an old kenworth cab over with the 12v71 in it, that i just barely remember due to only being 3 in 87, but the following year he switched to a 78 white /freightliner with the big cam cummins that he drove till 93.

  • I forgot to say that I did did drive a long nose White with a detroit 318 naturally aspirated engine. They did exist in the 80's. No pulling power in the mountains but OK on the flatlands

  • they always have a supercharger at least, and if its turbo then it has both, it needs forced induction to run, and with a turbo it wouldst be able to start without the supercharger

  • There were no Detroit Diesels built without a scavenging blower.
