Peter who stood by these two brave men & wore the civil rights badge was purposely barred from competing in 1972 games & was unable to compete again @ Olympic level. Australian Government was close with US policy. Peter died a few years ago. My friend Dean Murphy produced the Salute film. He with others flew Tommy & John over to Australia to carry Peter's coffin. I was 1 yo when this momentous event happened. I'm Anglo & at school I was bullied due to my friends were of different nationalities.
John Carlos is a great man in person....he works at the high school in my town..and i got to say i learned more from him speaking than i did from my real teachers....greatest moments ever is when he brought george foreman in to the class to speak for us...that shit was mind blowing..
@cky1088 You heard my great uncle speak? Thats awesome! I live all the way in NC so I havent met him yet but it really excites me when I hear people talk about my great uncle, THE John Carlos because it reminds me of the history and greatness in my blood.
I salute all my bros back then, Evans, Carlos !, Tommy ! , my fellow team member Bob Beamon ... and others of that era. I was in Vietnam dealing with that contradiction (1968 Tet Offensive). And folks ... now we have Pres Obama and FIRST LADY, Michell... brothers and sisters in prisons (slaves?) ..... and.GITMO ... the struggle continues.
I think they world has settled into a time where most people aren't caring whether you're black.. when when they say "I don't like you" no they're not saying it because you're black/white they're saying it cause you annoy them. So it's more of a time.. where "I don't give a sht if you're black or white you're annoying"
How can anyone judge a man off the color of his skin
I believe in equality for every man no matter what nation hes from what language he speaks or what color he is, one should not be judged by that, one should only be judged by the things he says or does if even that.
Its amazing that there are still people who are trying to take America back to the Racist shithole that it was in during the 60s and support the kind of backwards thinking that existed then
ElreyJones you are the racist if you think thats what they are. This is a gesture towards black equality and freedom, not supremacy or power. How dare you insult their courage and beliefs, your as bad as those who banned them from the olympics and supported segregation and white supremacy. Who they hell are you to call them racist.
ElreyJones you are a sick person. Go educate yourself about the history of your country and how the hateful racist tradition in US politics keeps oppressing poor people, no matter if white or black. There is something wrong in a country where one has to work three jobs to make a living! That's what you should be thinking about!

Black african racists and their white bolshevik sidekicks are enslaving middle class people today through the welfare system. Poor people do not work, commit massive crimes against working people, destroy the culture and peace that others were supposed to be guaranteed by our constituion, and get to eat while middle class people have to work two and three jobs just to support their families. This is oppression against working people.
elreyjones - you utter fool. learn to spell for starts, and then go about reconstructing your beliefs. in fact, don't bother. throw yourself off a building. the world needs less like you.

these two black african racists were typical of the black racists of that and this era. Whites need to march against the black on white rapes, pillaging, murder, and their racial cleansing against us out of our schools, public transporation, and cities.
Fantastic video clip i watched a programe just lastweek on BBC4 in the United Kingdom U.K. i would have been 6 years old when this happend so i did not know much till i got older, now i know why it was done and give it my fullest support great moment in History just like Mohamed Ali not going to war, People need to stand up for there rights i`ll give this full stars as it`s one of the best Video clips on you tube!!! thanks for putting it on here respect one love.
thank you for putting this clip up. This is the first time I've seen video of the actual protest and not just pictures even if there is commentary over it.
there is a new documentary which is EXCELLENT- it is called 'Salute' and should be out soon. It takes a look at the background to this protest at the 1968 games and looks a bit deeper into peter norman (the australian guy who wore the badge to support). Well worth a watch!!
I instruct my 11th grade US History students ata Philly public school to look at the famous photo in their texts. I pose the question, "Why is Smith wearing a glove on his right hand and Carlos on his left?" I get various responses ranging from peace vs war to one is right-handed, the other left. My theory is much more simple. Thery only had a single pair of gloves. Does anybody know if this is true?
Many of the athletes wanted to boycott the games in response the intense racial injustice at the time. Instead they planned to do their own form of protest since they could not agree upon a uniform protest. Smith planned to wear the gloves as his protest. At the last minute he gave his left glove to Carlos told him to just do what he does. Carlos had not been involved in the meetings thus had nothing prepared. The Australian that finish was also wearing a pin that Smith offered him.
No, MichelLune is correct. It's in this month's SI. Smith's wife was shopping with Carlos' first wife and bought a pair of gloves. Smith was going to wear them and at the last minute gave one to Carlos. Carlos never had a pair of gloves to wear to begin with. He didn't know about it until moments before they took the stand.
I LOVE THIS!!! Will someone please tell me where I can buy the DVD of the entire clip. I saw it once on HBO and was electrified. The bravery of these men - all of them including Peter Norman (he didn't have to wear that button)-is commendable. I feel like young people today are experiencing a similar kind of Bravery. They are not willing to follow the old prejudices of their parents. At least I hope so. We'll see in November.
I hate to say it, flowergirl, but I'm afraid that today's athlete (and entourage) couldn't afford to lose all the endorsements. To be less cynical, more human, they've grown up in a different world and time. '63 to '70 was a truly exceptional time.
