I seriously can't get enough from this Particulr guuy. His sound and electricity when played on stage is incredible... Never see such talent. Same thing for hula hoops and cactus cruz. And what's about Sargasso Sea!?! Thanks a lot for these posts, but Hey! Question; Can you post the hula hoops's studio version ?
This comment might be cheesy, but seriously; Do you want me to count all the licks that Michael played that I have never seen any other guitarist play before???:P
This is just such underated music. kills me that you hear the top 100 guitarist of rolling stone magazine and the same old names crop up.. guys like MLF are just so unappreciated..
@frillylizzard - Rolling Stone magazine have zero credibility as far as I am concerned - they keep touting guys like Billy Corgan and Kurt Cobain as in the top 10 guitar players - how the fuck can they justify THAT shit?!
Without doubt one of the best and most original guitarists from the golden age of 'Roadrunner/Shrapnell' solo guitar albums way back. So good to see him back recently on YouTube doing the Fender stuff. Don't know what he'd been up to but good to see him back. Whoever posted this, I thank you so much as to see this track played live is awesome!!
If anyone could come close to Satch in terms of making guitar instrumentals sound melodic and accessible and yet be technically demanding without sounding like musical wankery, its this guy. Awesome!
sounds almost like the record, thats great cos few gut guitar players sound like their own record live, i wish there where some tabs, if some have them, please i want them to hahaa
I bought MLF's first album back in 1991 or '92. It was incredible. His phrasing, expression, sound and overall style made him a league or two above Vai.
The second album, Cactus Cruz, wasn't as impressive, kind of a turnoff. Years have passed, all of my CDs were stolen years ago and I never got to replace his debut album.
Seeing him here brings back great memories, and serves as a reminder of who is who. Check out what he's doing these days. He is friggin' amazing.
I know this is said about a lot of guitarists, but he is definitely underrated. If you can get a hold of his instructional video I would definitely recommend it.
Yeah I heard this song a shred compilation record, and I was sure that it was Joey Tafolla, but I did research and realized that it was MLF. Great guy!
@ibanez777vbk its probably because they're jealous that they cant play like he can, or they're thinking, HOLY SHIT THIS GUY CAN ACTUALLY PLAY BETTER THAN MOST PEOPLE AND IS TALENTED O=, so they are left paralyzed from his guitar mastery.
@ibanez777vbk So you know, there aren't mics on the audience. Just because you don't hear applause on the recording doesn't mean they didn't applaud. It just wasn't picked up.
this huy is awesome, heard him when i was at my guitar lesson and my guitar teacher was playin 24 grand avenue. amazin, totally underrated! god who can this sort of music now, nobody is the answer, all this fancy assed indie/rap crap, gets on my nerves wat happened 2 good music
One of my fave 80's shredders, I remember going to a Michael Lee Firkins clinic at Musical Exchanges in Birmingham, England back in the late 80's and he totally blew me away. Interesting composition and style of playing, sounded totally different from what everyone else was doing at the time.
a lot of the 'guitar players' (of the ilk that only guitar magazine readers know)that put out solo records, all seem to have the same derivative blues influenced rock sound... this is in a league all of his own. thanks for posting. never seen footage of him before and have lost my tapes of him :(
the grove dose have that Becker-ish characteristic to it but if you really know Jason Becker he actually got that stuff from MLF so yeah i dont hear any of those 3 in his playing
have you heard Jason's "End Of The Beginning"? MLF did the guitar work on there and he captured Jason's soul so good! seriously its as if Jason played it
I've been watchin vids of this guy play and I'm not completely retarded so I don't think I'm wrong for thinking that the vids are from the same show. I like what I'm hearing but can't understand why the audience is FUCKING Dead.
This guy is kickin all that ass on stage and there's no response from the people...I don't fuckin get it
First of all, I agree with you - he's kickin' ass. BUT, he's not a rock star clown, who bounces across the stage being more showman than virtuoso musician. In other words, he's closer to an Eric Johnson type than a guy from Poison. Like EJ, he's focused on the music, not on being an entertainer. And thank god for that because there's way too many of those poser ass clowns as it is. LOL!
But you know what the true shame of it all is? That this guy isn't a household name.
Yup...but shit man. Not ONE fucking clap...If it were me I might be a little sad n shit.lol.
Or at least think that I'm doin somethin wrong. People don't go to watch classical guitarist rape on their instruments and expect to see anyone surf the crowds but they still get their standing ovations. Not even a "WOO-HOO"! for this guy
You're right. No argument from me. This guy is such a freakin' monster... Isn't it a damn shame that the cream of the crop get practically NO accolades from the media or anyone else? Meanwhile talentless rappers sell 200 million records, drive Bentleys and win grammy awards.
ive had gigs where the crowed isnt exactly into what ever style you play no matter how great you are
or what im thinking is that its just a recording of the audio and they cut out the video's audio so all you hear is the instruments and Microphones, you do hear like a group(id say 8 people) of claps so..yeah...maybe the crowed just has no rhythm at all and just cant process this wonderful music hes playing...orr since its was in 90s they wanted grunge
Whoever posted this, thankyou so much!! I saw MLF on this tour and always wanted to see this track or get a tab as its awesome. Shame he's a bit quiet nowadays. Very, very unique player. AWESOME!!!
I'm working on it, so far only a few parts giving me fits. An audio of this would help tremendously. The studio version has a lot of add-on reverb and such cluttering the guitar up. This is pretty clean and would be perfect for slowing down.
i remember deciding between this tune and Cliffs of Dover to learn on saxophone.. Cliffs turned out more playable for sax.. but when I hear this again.. ahh, I get inspired!
Mlf ( not Milf! ) is just out of this world, i thought he was meant to be launched on some very succesful career...were is he now?
Laughuing stacks is just so groovy and cool, shame he ain't playing like that with em Iguanas. Fantastic musician and touch in the hayday of picking frenzies and clichès! Baci
Love the fact I can see this here. I have loved this groove for years. So cool to actually see him do it live. I think this is such a monster-tasty, destroyer instrumental. Michael Lee is da s__t!!
dude his awsome guitar player with very orignal songs and cool stuff but it anoiyds me that this crowd is soo weak ... no screaming yea or somthing not even 1 time...
Bottom line...Stop worrying about others and give the guy the respect he deserves...The dude is off the hook.who cares who wrote it.Welcome to skill 101.
What is the name of Jasons Cd where everyone plasys on it...It is a shame...Jason of all players should be the on out there still playing...It makes you wonder if he was just to good to be true..

This song is neither of the things you mentioned - it's just a fun little tune. It's called "Laughing Stacks" and the sound is similar to laughter, musically. Look past the hair and the goofy 80s vibe, and it's really quite competent playing. Firkins is experimenting in the same way that Beck did. He had a musical theme and a goal for the sound beyond simple "shredding". Whether you personally like listening to it or not is a matter of taste.

It's a stage mix feed to this audio.
Turn it up louder and you can hear the audience at the end.
Unlike a 'concert dvd' mix, there's no micing up of the audience for ambiance.
