start a new paper i got fired at the yadkin ripple two weeks ago boss asked me what i thought of the secretary's breasts and i reported him to the ceo
This breaks my heart. Very sad to watch newspapers dying. I loved my nine years in the newspaper business. Best of luck to everyone who got laid off. It's just not right.
this saddens me deeply. I spent more than 20 years at the Journal, five on the copy desk. I worked with many of the people in this video. I consider most of them to be my friends. Eighteen good, accomplished and caring journalists lost their jobs in what can only be described as a short-sighted corporate decision to bolster profits. The Journal and the city will poorer because of it.
I've never been to Winston-Salem and I don't think I've ever even read a single story from the Journal. But what a shame this is, and what a tribute this is.
"Its success is its credibility, not its bottom line." Karen Parker, those are words that should be memorized by every newspaper's publisher and top editors. Those people, who are usually in and out in a few years, don't understand 1. What we do or 2. How much we know and contribute to the newspaper in a multiplicity of ways, not just dotting the i's and crossing the t's. And seeing that cake at the end just got me all choked up.
I grew up in Winston-Salem and fell in love with newspapers because of the Journal. When my kindergarten teacher asked us each what we wanted to be when we grew up, I said a newspaper editor. I was lucky enough to work for MG -- although at a different property -- for several years back in better times. This video makes me so sad because copy editors are accustomed to getting no credit, but this is so low.
I am honored to have worked with them all as well. Even if TRADULO never logged off of ATEX in time for us in IT to do maintenance. It is a shame. I wish I could have been there. -David Clark
I have always loved the Journal. My fifth grade teacher in 1980 gave us extra credit for finding errors in print and turning it in, so I started reading the paper everyday. I never found errors in the Journal much. That started my journey to becoming a writer. Thanks guys. Godspeed.
just another example of how clueless media general corporate is to the people who actually make their publications run smoothly. do they even know who they are kicking to the curb? who in tampa or richmond knows anything about winston-salem nc? newspapers need to stay on the local level. this is why the newspapers are failing because the people running them on the corporate level have no clue. i am so sorry for these people who are losing their jobs. i have been there and done that with mg.
I'm sure MG execs would say this is part of the transition online. Newspaper stories online need editing, too.

Well--ultimately, good work has to be its own reward, I guess.

Consolidated copy desks are a tool of the devil.

You are right, Karen. A newspaper depends on its credibility. Unedited copy makes me want to either turn and run or whip out a red pen!
