  • loving how even a camera isn't able to follow the quick movements of her hands

  • Professionalism

  • nodame is you Oo

  • salute to igor stravinsky

  • ↓ I only like her playing...... too difficult

  • This looks so amazing fun to play and learn.

  • I'm thinking of learning this, but I don't know how difficult it is because I don't have the sheet music. Could someone who has a THOROUGH understanding of this piece compare it to La Campanella or feux follets in terms of difficulty? Thanks!

  • @tjtheplay

It's much harder than La Campanella. Not sure about Feux follets as i haven't attempted that.

that said, it is possible with effort/dedication to play 1st movement - 2 minutes of it.

I struggled to complete all three movements "in a single go" as the overall physical effort/concentration would have been hard to sustain. Each movement individually is ok though! :-)

  • @eazygoingbloke I just got the sheet music and it's BITCH TO READ. I haven't learned over half the first page but reading three staffs is kinda difficult.

  • @tjtheplay

My advise is to learn pages 2 - 4 first. I found the scales on page 5 VERY difficult, but one day they became much clearer for no apparent reason - something just clicked. Takes a long time to get the fingers strong enough for the chords in right hand page 1 and page 6/7, to be able to sound a melody using 5th finger.

Last movement contains a lot of material that is good as "exercises" in lots of techniques, and excellent for strengthening all the fingers.

  • @tjtheplay

Also, to ascertain whether it is ever going to be realistic to perform it (as opposed to just practising bits and pieces for fun/technical exercises):

Check out the "acrobats dances" in 3rd movement - the left hand random octave jumps with endless scales up and down in the right - requires real mental gymnastic/concentration.

Hardest in the entire piece is the section based on E octaves in 3rd mov. leading to spans across entire piano at breakneck speed (and 4 staves).

  • @tjtheplay

My final conclusion was that the E octaves section in 3rd mov was what separated me from those that can perform this piece properly. I simply can't imagine jumping all over the piano so relentlessly after so much other energy and concentration has come before, so i decided to bow out of attempting Petroushka live. Don't really like all that 'noise' either! Nothing lost, as it was such a good experience learning it. Have played 1st and 2nd movs independently though.

  • @tjtheplay dont mind eazygoingbloke, yeah u can play it...la campanella does have very difficult technique, truthfully, ithink i can play this, but not la campanella yet

  • @audreyhsux5727 Seriously?

But the only difficulty with La Campanella is the trilling with the 4th and 5th fingers and the endurance.

I heard the tremolos are a bitch though.

I'll give it a try though thanks =)

  • @tjtheplay believe me, i know...

  • Very very good. Well done. You are the fastest pianist.

  • technical is only a small part of music? Is that what your teacher taught you? Technical is about everything of music. Just admit you can't play that fast, you have never seen anyone else has played fast, you never imagined in your wild dream that anyone could possibly play that fast.

Yujia is truly exceptional. She is the best pianist in the world. You can be jealous any way you want, but you can't deny the fact that she is technically the best.

  • @zerosum88 "She is the best pianist in the world"

Haha don't make me laugh! She's good, but definitely not the best

"Technical is about everything of music"

    That's not true.

"Just admit you can't play that fast, you have never seen anyone else has played fast"

    Speed isn't everything.

  • @zerosum88

'Technical is about everything of music.'

Well you obviously don't have a soul then. lol.

    'Yujia is truly exceptional.'

Yes. She has brilliant mind and fingers and good visual style.

'She is the best pianist in the world.'

Um. Argerich, Kissin, Pogorelich, Pollini, Volodos, Grosvenor, Hough....many many others? Why are you even trying to rank them anyway?

'You can be jealous any way you want'

Are you jeolous of your computer's abilities in multiplication?

  • @zerosum88

ps in last remark, i don't mean to say Yuja is a computer! True, she's not the most expressive or thought-provoking interpreter of pieces, but she clearly is still a musician in the sense of phrasing and certain tonal effects. No, what i mean is that music considered as "pure technique" i.e. the generation of patterns of notes through time, is really just a computational task for the mind, not something worth being jealous of - unless you are also jealous of computers.

  • @zerosum88

    Final point.

There is absolutely no place in music for jealousy. None. Music born out of envy is pathetic.

Music born out of wanting acclaim is never going to be as good as music born out of love of music lets face it.

The works of the great masters require deep understanding of colour, style, emotions, a lot of presence, and many things that someone can posses even WITHOUT being the greatest technically,

Jealousy is for second-rate thinkers and human beings.

  • Was this an encore? She seems kind of tired.

  • .....whoah, its very lively.

  • This is a very catchy piece

  • 40 people are thinking instead of listening. Get off YouTube and write your own music if this is so unlistenable.

  • @5147848amp So you don't think one should think WHILE listening? They go hand in hand. There is no point in playing OR listening to music unless you are thinking about it. Or else it's just noise.

  • @cowheadcow

The only time music is noise is when two tunes are going on at the same time! What I meant by "thinking" was "excessive criticism." Classical musicians do this too much. Traffic noise - that needs criticism. My dogs prancing around at 4am on wooden floorboards - that needs criticism. Thai pop music - lambast that shit! But a pro-pianist babe hammering out some serious tunes is different. Those with a problem with the tempo should go back to the search box; commenting isn't required.

  • @5147848amp So it's only OK to point out the moments you like? Fair criticism is admitting that your favorite artists aren't perfect. Some of the greatest pianists were/are horrible self critics. Do you think they want mindless listeners too?

  • @705JRC

There's a great phrase that runs "opinions are like arseholes, everyone's got one." That's where I stand. If you have nothing positive to say about an artist, move on and find a artist you can speak positively about.

  • @5147848amp IMO ;-)

  • @cowheadcow

    Straight up!

  • Real life Nodame *3* (And not the live action drama version) ;A; !!

  • @kirarandsangolover I kinda wish she would cut her hair like Nodame's...

  • All I can say is AWESOME! :D WAWAWAWOOWW! :) <3

  • 40 people are... I can't really say what they are.

  • well music is not about technical it is about interpretation and she is amazing technically but interpretation average, sometimes it is better to slow down as she lost piece of context ,she is good even very good but technique is only small part of being good musician

  • Thank you, medici.tv for sharing! What an incredible performer! She definitely deserves her Deutsche Grammophon endorsement!

  • What an absolute genius. Why are there so many snooty jealous people making truly inane comments about how the interpretation is somehow lacking in orchestral colour, somewhat polite or god knows what else. Critics should be made to play better and lined up and shot if they can't.

  • Lush!

  • This is very good with neat and tidy technical control but a little too polite for my tatse. I prefer the tigerish elemental force and wide ranging dynamics of Yuga Wangs contemporary Khatia Buniatishvili. That latter gives a truly scintillating live account of these dances, now available on You Tube.

  • noda megumi's daughter!

  • @SadTigers Who is this "nodame" that everyone keeps talking about?

  • @tjtheplay It's an anime wherein the heroine can't read a music score but is incredibly good in playing piano

  • @tjtheplay A japanese cartoon from a manga made by N. Tomoko. Title is Nodame Cantabile.

  • @tjtheplay A japanese cartoon from a comic titled Nodame Cantabile.

  • She seems so conceited....

  • This is phenomenal. As a pianist who is not prone to attacks of jealousy I admire this woman for her will, talent and musicianship.

  • And what the hell is wrong with the 40 people that gave this a thumbs down?

  • Is Yuja a chain smoker?

  • @itsanthonyhere I'm halfway joking, BUT.... search on youtube: "Yuja Wang Philadelphia". Watch the interview, and while she's practicing with the orchestra, it looks like she's got a pack sitting on the piano ready to go. Not that there's anything wrong with her. It would just be a shame for this talented young woman to become ill, or worse, for her to start looking like Martha Argerich. ;)

  • Wonderful

  • Sorry - that to me is just fast.

Check out Alexis Weissenberg's interpretation of the first movement on Youtube. That - to me - is how you play Petroushka.

  • @brunopell87 Exactly - Alexis was an extraordinary musician and had surreal technique :-)

  • holy sheepshit

  • Yuja Wang, you brought me to tears AGAIN! (And this is the 6th time i've watched this clip)!!!

    I love you!

  • marry me

  • hahaha she's doing that mouth and head thing that nodame does..

  • Elle joue avec tant de vigueur, tant d'énergie, tant d'enthousiasme et d'engagement que personne ne pourrait jamais interpréter mieux qu'elle ce mouvement difficile.

  • Azns

  • Une jeune femme qui réalise ses rêves! Chapeau!

  • da-me???

  • I thought Weissenberg did and excellent job of it untill I heard Yuja, Boy, I would love to kiss those hands!!!

  • @phoenix3568 - Agreed. It looses something, here. Bronfman can't play as quickly, but who cares? He brings more out of the piece, as you can see in his interpretation if you look for it.

  • Comment removed

  • She´s just amazing! Thank you for sharing.

  • I think the speed she plays is actually detracting from how the piece would be played orchestrally and how the themes play. That being said, Stravinsky didn't write for piano well and there are parts of the piano version which are practically impossible to play.

  • @Phoenix3568 actually, before he showed his ballet scores to the producers he would play them on piano...

O.o he was just REALLY boss at piano

  • @Phoenix3568 being that are infinitely different interpretations of Stravinsky's orchestral works, it's pointless to think your opinion represents anything finite... since such a thing doesn't exist.

  • @Phoenix3568 Obviously it would be arranged differently if played orchestrally. But i think as a solo, this is very impressive.

  • she plays very hectically, but at the same time it's all there. i love it.!!

  • reminds me of nodame..

  • @thesiscz Reminds me of the Nyan Cat song. This should probably worry me.

  • @thesiscz She plays the song very different from the original Stravinskyh, gives her style to the song... reminds me of Nodame too because i feel it seems to play while playing the song

  • @thesiscz AGREE!! MUCH LIKE NODAME~

  • @thesiscz Me to!!!!!! That anime was epic!!!!!!

  • me too

  • ぎゃぼー!のだめがいる!

  • @amaterasu8000000 ほんと!

  • she is wanderful !!!

  • Great performance! Yuja is my favorite pianist, but what's going on with the key left of Yuja's left hand at 0:25?

  • @alexisrussian some of the keys on my piano do that too it's freaking annoying. I'd think with as good as she is she'd be playing on a higher quality piano

  • @alexisrussian yes! i found out that. how come. so weird!

  • *dirty thoughts regarding her fast hand movements*

  • nodame !!!!!!!!!!!!!11

  • @jiliannec Megumi Noda :)

  • Excuse me, Why does your hand have WINGS? O__O

  • nodame chan :3 <3

  • задротка е@#$%я

  • Oh, I thought Chibura was blowing smoke so I checked Pollini's version on You-tube. Yes, it is much better, a more mature less frenetic but very energetic performance. But Wang is young and will get even better over time.

  • @juspasenthru I'm sorry, but when you can play this with no intonation what so ever and half the speed, than you can comment on her playing. She might not play perfectly, but no pianist plays perfectly. Even the best make mistakes. You may not realize it, but they do.

  • Please don't tell me she's a lesbo, as I wish to marry her

  • Damn.

  • Wow. I have no words. Utterly beyond amazing.

  • Omfg*___*

    Perfect, awesome*_*

  • waaaaa . i'm totally overwhelmed :)

  • Maurizio Pollini's version is much much much better.

  • Her technique is great, but, compare to Polini and Gilels, this version is shallow.

  • Holy geebus. Lol Sometimes it looks as if she's being fast forwarded cause she's playing so fast...

  • Anyone noticed at 1:44 : She does one hell of a finger stretch (not sure if it's an octave). With relatively small hands she has an amazing technique, and she's still able to maintan emotional phrasing. One of the greatest interpreters around these days!!

  • her hands are soooooo strong wtffffff

  • and then she just bows and walks away.

    like a boss.

    respect.

  • Well...that was good.

  • Holy Shit this made my day virtuoso indeed

  • Wooow *__*, perfectly. Each gave her. Really beautiful!

  • (Y)

  • She looks so happy .. Her playing is beautiful.

  • I bet she can't play the piano slowly anymore.

  • sorry too contrived

  • HACk

  • reminds me of Nodame in Nodame Cantabile <3

  • @SimperingSimpleton Maybe when you improve on your computer usage skills, you can learn to click on other videos of her playing other pieces that include black keys.

  • @hd9xc1k2 Ah! Thanks for the tip! I now see she has advanced so much she can also play a piece written in F or G.

  • @SimperingSimpleton Oh I see. So you think she's not technically advanced enough. Why, let us see how well you play and maybe you can be even more famous than she is.

  • @hd9xc1k2 Yeah, I think so. Virtuosos are a dime a dozen. Ineptitude is the wave of the future.

  • @SimperingSimpleton Hey my friend, I get what you're saying... But she plays turkish march.... which if I'm not mistaken is either in the key of E (4 sharps) or B (5 sharps)... So she is VERY advanced.

  • @Thriller94 It's in A minor--no sharps and no flats, which proves that she's not advanced!! ;-)

  • @avidfanify Hello, Maybe check this one out... C-Sharp minor...

That should change your mind.... Also... I'd love to see you play something? Let me know! I assume you're really good... Hahah, :p

  • @avidfanify

    watch?v=WcGdy4Whtrc&feature=related

  • holy shit, this is fucking impossible!! definetely the fastest version of the russian dance ive ever heard. her wrist work is unbelievable. look at 0:21, not human.. this is alien!!

  • Lol even in the still picture for this video her right hand is blurred.

  • 1:12 I like it a lot

  • Divine

  • Es una pianista Maravillosa.

    Felicidades.

  • Who the hell pressed dislike? What is not to love? This is supreme talent, and a fabulous piece of music to boot.

  • @Gentlefish I pressed dislike. I'll tell you why. It's a fast blur, lacking in exciting accents, in color, in voice differentiation. Her performance makes me realize how really HARD this piece is --- to capture the frenetic ostinati all competing for attention. It's OK. But do you hear 3 separate voices around 1:06? Where is the LH going at 1:12? Nowhere. Listen to Kissin's clarity and drama, and maybe you'll realize why this is so bland. The best I could conclude was that she was tired.

  • How can anyone denigrate this performance. She is one of the really great pianists who have reach the height of human achievement. Yuji, Alice Sara Ott, Jung Lin, Maksim Mrvica - these greats have no peers.

  • SPEEDHACK

  • Asians with their cheat codes, that's how.

  • @cowzilla8 Cheat codes: education.

  • Parallel tenths. e__e; I am amazed.

  • If you guys like this check out the Petrushka ballet video. This song is from the first tableau, but some of the piano work in the second is mind blowing (yes even compared to this). I would love to hear her version of that stuff...

  • She's great

  • 30 people dislike are just JEALOUS of her talented !! LOL

  • Does anyone else think of Sweeny Todd when they hear this....?

  • I strongly suspect that Stravinsky wrote this song in an attempt to make 99% of piano players feel inept while also sounding good. If this is the case, he did a damn good job.

  • 30 people.....have clicked the dislike button......because they don't like the video....

  • close your eyes and imagine an orchestra!! awesome!!

reminds me of the annoying girl who enjoyed the violin solo too much in nyoc!

  • 29 people listen richard clayderman everyday

  • Mus be a nightmare when she's on tour having to check the paino in to luggage.

  • Asian father: Good, now do backwards!

  • I love her playing

  • Comment removed

  • well of course she can , she's asian.

  • Her playing is so assured. I actually burst out laughing half way through this because it was so good.

  • I love Stravinsky...and this is a completely breathtaking performance!

  • Excellent

Michael the Greek modern classical composer

  • @lavamaster530 shes like "im so wet"

  • This music sounds like something from Final Fantasy or some other VGM, really great!

  • woah... fast... O_o

  • She must have kids with Maksim. The gene must never perish.

  • @alexxadn MAKISM? Try Hamelin...

  • @alexxadn Maksim is nonsense

  • @lavamaster530 when you are a ingenious pianist like her (probably better than you) people tend to do things that help them concentrate. Shes probably talking because she feels the emotion of the music, or she is keeping time. idk. but its not weird for sure

  • Wtf was she talking to herself at 1:00?

  • for em who dislike it. i know youre just jealous cos you cant do it. not even close.

  • Octaves have met their match.

  • So much love I have for this woman.

  • This must be sooooo fun to play (and physically demanding too!) !!

  • AHHHH!!! The hands do teleport!!!

  • .....asians.......

  • my favourite pianiste of the world..

    great job yuja

  • I wonder if the keys even have time to rise up again.

  • @JmillMoreno They doesn't need to. Compared to upright piano in grand piano u can play the key again even though it haven't got up again.

  • muscles.. lol

  • wow her fingers are so fast, they're just blurs on camera:P

  • @tina11495 because she is asian ^_^

  • @changfu3 Her being Asian has nothing to do with it.

  • the notes take much more time to get up again, than her hands need time to play another note xD damn she's great. No, she's awesome!

  • She's such a good pianist .. I think because her hands are so grand :)
