Originally, the Kabuki was played by women. Just because of a law made by men, they weren't allowed to go on stage anymore. So young boys took those roles- until they weren't allowed to play in the Kabuki as well. The government said that they used the theatre as some kind of platform to find suitors. In the past, many Onnagata also worked as prostitutes. Kabuki wasn't a very profitable art form in the past....

i think no woman could do this,count the heavy wig,heavy kimono,and he move like its nothing,it must be hard to breath during the show....now i just realized how strong he is,,,,
women in the renaissance used to wear almost 50 pounds of clothing daily and still dance lively and demanding court dances throughout the night....im sure a there is a woman out there that could play a "womens" part in kabuki.
Except that maiko wear those heavy kimono almost every day of the year. You do need to be in good physical shape, but some of the girls wearing these ensembles weigh less than 100 pounds, and are carrying a clothing weight that's half as heavy as they are! And on shoes that can be as tall as 5-6 inches.
