I drove a Freightliner with a C-12....not a bad little engine for power but they had a nasty habit of breaking tips off injectors and smashing pistons.
Hmmm... that's a strange place for the cooling fan. How does it pull any air over the radiator? It's kinda funny how the engine is only 1/3 as wide as the bus too.
Actually cat bought out western star and are making their engine just got their trucks and are renaming westren star, cat. They are starting out with day cab and commercial trucks like dump and garbage trucks and eventually getting in to highway trucks. This is all from a person who works for cat and just recentally went to a company meeting discussing the future products.
@FUCKINROCKIT because they dont, the only thing cat has cummins in is the o&k shovels when they first bought them out, and the smaller equipment like 303 excavators, but they are perkins, trust me i work for caterpillar
my computer is filled with videos of these huge diesel engines at idle. there is something i cant explain, it is something that feels really awesome when i listen to them. i´m a car enthusiast, but there is something about these engines that calms me and makes me forget all my problems...i just close my eyes and enjoy there sound...imagining all the parts moving in a delicate sync, creating a marvelous vallet that ends up in PURE RAW POWER!!!
@kbnastyman To give you an idea... I'm from the UK but I suppose it's the same over there too. I drive a 15 meter tri axle coach with a 12 speed volvo ishift gearbox and 460hp straight 6 volvo 12lt engine. The truck I used to drive was an 11lt straight 6 450hp engine with the same 12 speed volvo box. There you go, a coach that will never weigh more than 57000LB with a more powerful engine than the truck that can legally haul 97000LB. Go figure lol
I used to work for a company that exclusively ran VanHools, but our 2145s were all Cummins M11 powered. We had a couple of older 945s, and an 840, all of which were L10 powered. I would have given anything to have Cat powered buses! The best diesel engines on the road!
yes, with the exhaust valve open there is no compression to push the cylinder back down. Therefore the engine slows very quickly creating negative torque on the transmission and driveline.
The exhaust valve actually remains closed longer than normal to increase back pressure, thus slowing the motor. That is why you hear the exhaust snapping. It is the sudden release of highly compressed exhaust..
you are the one mistaken sir. please consult wiki or your local service station if my comment wasn't enough information to inform you of the workings of a Jacob's (compression RELIEF) brake.
Exhaust brakes and compression brakes are different. Exhaust brakes are behind the turbo and limit the flow of exhaust. Compression brakes are under the valve covers and they open the exhaust valves after tdc so the compressed air doesnt force the piston back down.
a jake brake is an engine brake that is typically used on diesel engines (im not sure if it is ever used on gasoline engines which i sincerely doubt) stoppin alot of weight takes a hell of a toll on your brakes so this system uses engine braking whenever the accelerator is released.
Typical Nigger .... it's to bad YOU PEOPLE cant learn to communicate properly. What your wrote is barely legible. Sorry to turn it into a racial thing. Great bus! Love those cat c13's. do they still make em?
Yeah they still make them (cat engines), ur momz still got her job taking out the garbage and polishing the CEO's KNOB right??? if yes then CAT is still in business!!!
Are you sure they make those engines still you fucking idiot? I was almost positive that Cat got out of the on highway business which would mean ceased production of the c13 engine. Your comment was totally irrelevant and you sound like a fucking idiot. I didnt ask if CAT was still in business. "polishing the CEO's knob" > ?? wtf are you even talking about. You are one stupid fuck
they still produce the c13 engine, but it is used for plant machinery not trucks. also caterpillar has not pulled out of the on highway businesss, they have just ceased selling engines to on highway truck manufacturers, but caterpillar are bringing out there own FULL cat on highway truck that is cat made and badged. so it should be read for retail in a few months
the 2010 epa rule are so tight these day that CAT can't make engine for on highway use, the only guys left are CUMMINS and DETROIT, they are using urea to turn exaust fumes into h2o and nitrogen and navistar that used in cylinder technology.
@emile93 because CAT is lazy, can't open up some books and start doing some really good engines, good MPG and nature friendly, rednecks, what can you say more
@bykashka75 do you know how difficult it is to make an ecofriendly diesel that lasts a long time and has good power? thats why cat quit making truck engines, because they didnt want to keep making unreliable engines, they would rather quit first rather than keep up with these stupid emission laws, i dont see emission controls cracking down on jets and space shuttles, with are way worse for the invironment
@stingraystud kidding me, detroit diesel was doing this for , what, almost half a century. they did a good power for the job and good MPG. i agree, emissions are suck big time
that uses the exhaust stroke of a cylinder to actuate the exhaust valve on another cylinder before the compression stroke, therefore releasing the intake air before it combusted.
NOW IN ENGLISH
A jakebrake is that loud noise you here when the bus is slowing down(or use the brakes while reving up)
It's purpose is to slow the bus down at high speeds without beating the crap out of your brake shoes or caliper pads.

We had Van Hools here in the US for sometime now. I remeber when I first start noticing Van Hool buses back in 1993. I saw a T-840/T-940, and when It pulled off, that it Cummings engine sound great. I would who Van Hool, because MCI ruled the roads back then. If I could chareter three buses at one time, and I could pick what model of buses I could use, I have J4500, T-2145 and a H3-45. I love the tall 50000+lb coaches!
I drive a C13/Allison combo at 430 HP, good power, but no personality. You can't hear the turbo, you can't hear the jakes they are so quiet, its music to my ears after getting a bus with a Series 60 just hearing that turbo you take it for granted. Cummin's are the same way.

VanHool is a great bus, but german busses are the best: MAN, Mercedes, Neoplan and Setra. The best sound ever have the Neoplans, Mercedes and Setras with V8-Mercedes. And the sound of this V8s makes better with every kilometers. If you hear the sound of a 20 years old Mercedes O303 RHD or a Setra S 215 HD you will never forget it!!
By the looks of this bus, it looks like a VanHool T2145 with a Cat C-13 with either an Allison 6 Speed Auto or the ZF ASTronic 12 speed auto (I think).
Saludos a ti tambien, gracias. Si me llegan comentarios amenudo de el sonido del freno de motor, si esta perron!! Does it have the cat or the M-11. I used to drive the c2045's when i drove for sonoma county airport express, i would do 1500 miles a week on those buses. And we also had MCI D-4500's and those i really like those are work horses.
The C-13. I've driven the Cummin's ISM and in tractor trailer with the N-14/Celect a bigger engine than the ISM. The Cummin's ISM you can hear the jake, at least on the older ones, not sure about the newer ones but every one is going to the silent jakes, boring.
Oh yeah i just realized you said it was a 2006,by then they were dropping cats in them. And yeah i hate the silent jakes, we have silent and the awesome big sounding ones.
I believe that Van Hools with ZF come with out Jakes unlike the MCI and Prevost with ZF. Van Hools ZF has better gears due to it haveing a 12 speeds vs MCI and Prevost 10 speed ZF, but they just do not have a jake brake on them.
Too bad, I would love to hear jakes on a TD-925 double decker!
If New Jersey Transit Cancelled 400 Buses, then they should have Switched with Detroit MBE 900 DDEC or the Detroit Series 60 or the Cummins ISM on the NABI Bus.
Yes you are 100% correct, "2008F350powerstroke" they do reduce wear and they really help slow the bus easier and prevent burning the brakes while going down hill, if used correctly. Thanks for commenting and viewing, comment, rate, subscribe or view anytime. -BOGAR!

mudpuppy4life 3 years ago 7
If New Jersey Transit Cancelled 400 Buses, then they should have Switched with Detroit MBE 900 DDEC or the Detroit Series 60 or the Cummins ISM on the NABI Bus.
richardflint07 3 years ago
Series 60 is much better, the new Detroit Diesel DD15 is far more superior than the series 60, from testimonails of being driven much more power.

Thanks for sharing.
CMLovejoy 3 years ago

j45007 3 years ago
well this thing is big and they use them to reduce wear and tear on brakes
2008F350powerstroke 3 years ago
Yes you are 100% correct, "2008F350powerstroke" they do reduce wear and they really help slow the bus easier and prevent burning the brakes while going down hill, if used correctly. Thanks for commenting and viewing, comment, rate, subscribe or view anytime. -BOGAR!
j45007 3 years ago
