It should be impossible for that to happen on a luge track. The worst that should be possible to happen in luge is lose the event. not your life. It's shocking and saddening. I don't even follow the olympics too much and it's bothered me!

For a start, the wall is far too low for such a high speed corner. Had that been made higher he would've stayed in the track. Also, the steel girders should've been heavily padded up. Instead they are completely bare in these photos.

Do they not anticipate and think ahead of these kinds of accidents to happen and also to ensure MAXIMUM safety?

Whoever built this course and gave the go-ahead should be prosecuted.

    Georgia should be proud, Nodar.

  • You really think padding would help going 90MPH? Doubt it - glad they did make it safer but even if you hit the wall they put up would you be better off? It is a risky risky sport but then again look at downhill skiing -same thing - the women flew around on that course yesterday and one airlifted to hospital. Canada pulled a contender who was junior to keep her safe. If they felt that track was too difficult for lack of experience they could have pulled him too. Tragic young freak accident death

  • @Escort201

Blame the racer? Lexan even hockey rinks can afford that. RIP Nodar sorry the money was not spent on the safety of track Canadians had little say or oversight on budget spending. They scammed a lot of tax dollars for this and the accident was forseen by Argentine racer and Nodar to his dad who said..."I will win or I will die". Sad,

  • As faras I know, this is an urban legend.. Noder never said to his dad : ."I will win or I will die". He said that the track was difficult.

  • Thank you for your expression of sympathy.

  • ok, so you are #6 then... Why am I not surprised?

  • OMG!!! I just read only shit! it was an accident and nobody wants to somebody die.. I think some people are talking no about Nodar... I feel hate for Canada, you don;t have respect even for Nodar

  • thanks to the genius desings o/ the candians a life is lost. if they would have thought for once he would be alive.

    -отдых в мире nodar

  • Canadians + complex structural engineering = DEATH

  • I know I clicked on this vidoe to see what happend but you know, everyone says rest in peice and may god or whom ever he belives in do so, but no one really knew the guy, you get fame for five short minutes and no one remembers what goal you set until the announce it in another six years at the olympic games, he lived such a short life, but why not pad the pillers? is it really smart to have steel pillers when someone is going 90 miles per hour? May this man be revealed to a better world.

  • it looks like blood on his face or something right at the end, he must have smashed his head open... traumatic

  • what does VANOC have in common with Toyota ?

    1) They both trivialize deaths.

    2) Their designs kill efficiently by accelerating u to the nearest STEEL wall, a.k.a. instant tombstone.

    3) They both deny any wrong doings.

    4) They both accuse the operators didn't know what they were doing.

    5) Their victims are all dead and cannot speak out to defend themselves.

    6) They both blame other suppliers or designers instead of themselves.

    7) They both want to hush up their LEGAL responsibilities.

  • @AzerChristians

    You're really stupid.

I'd really enjoy to watch you design a track.

Its a shame there was a fault that cost that poor man his life. But mistakes are made, and instead of blaming people, show support to the family about their tragic loss, aspose to making a mockery about of this horrid event.

  • yes, I will support this poor Ollympian's family, by exposing the shitty Canadian manufactured and/or designed facilities, by helping them realize their LEGAL options, and by INFORMING the public the perils of buying "made in Canada" products just like driving a Toyota, i.e. your son, friend could be KILLED in 0.109 second, An OLYMPIC world record, and CANDA's FINEST moment. Last but not least, I will offer another heart to Canada's "with Growing Hearts" slogan, that of Nodar's heart. Shit on U

  • For you to bluntly accuse the Canadians that whatever structural deficiencies this track had were done purposely signifies that you are an extremely ignorant individual. No doubts mistakes were made and no doubt a person had to tragically die to expose these flaws but who is perfect? Obviously we'll start with you.....you are the most imperfect posting these really derogatory and stupid comments.

  • If you Canadians were BETTER designers, NO Georgean Olympian needs to die. But your INCOMPETENT manufacturing killed an athlete and sent him home in a box ! .. courtesy of "Made in Canada".

You Canadians are now a LAUGHING stock of the world for how "NOT to design". Enjoy your new found "OLYMPIC" reputation.

Grow up and admit your stupidity and you may retain however little respect that may remain.

Enjoy your Olympic Games of "Russian Roulette".

  • I do agree with you, canada was incompetant, and there was obvousily a design flaw in the entire track, a mans life was taken for a sport and for whom ever designed it didnt look into it to carefully, and how hard is it to think about putting guards on the pillers, if at any angle you are going 90 mph, theres bound for something to go wrong, I do not blame canada I blame the people who were careless to see out there design flaw and may Nadar enter a better world.

  • right. Nadar's lawyers will blame VANOC &IOC vicariously &let VANOC recover costs from whomever they subcontracted.

Nadar DIED on Canada's watch. Since Olympic is the game of SHARING the FAME when your countryman wins; therefore, they should share the SHAME & BLAME too. They can't have it both ways.

Toyota's problem becomes "Made in Japan" problem. Toxic toys becomes "Made in China" problem. All share their own SHAME. So this one is "Made in Canada" shame.

  • Incorrect. There is absolutely doubt that a person "had to tragically die to expose these flaws". The whole point is that this was absolutely forseeable, the track speed, and that in turn in particular, was well known to be a danger. Even the addition of padding, which they've now added at that point, could have made all the difference. As a Canadian, I acknowledge that we bear great responsibility in this death. Saying "who is perfect?", is simply morally irresponsible, and shameful.

  • you are in my memory, you never die

    r.i.p.

  • when i saw this video my heart was really aching.he was very pitiful...i knew already how he died.

  • R.I.P :(

  • And im sorry to the people that think a seat belt would have helped. The sled would most likely been thrown over with him, his weight would have most likely done that.... And ya there are some places where there tracks are closed off. I live in Calgary and our track has some spots that are closed off and some that are not.... regardless many of the spots are still deadly its all upon the driver, not the track.

  • No need to find videos of what happened. As I used to Luge its hard to see what happened to a man that was super excited to be involved with what Canada will always have in our history. At least he passed on doing what he loved and you will be forever missed by many people all over the world. RIP Love Canada

  • 1) Go sue VANOC, IOC

    2) First Olympic that handed out a body bag before any medal! Only Canada!

    3) New World Olympic record to stop from 155 km/h to 0 in less than 0.109 sec. A Canadian Olympic moment !

    4) If track was designed properly, why raised the wall and pad the stell pylons? That's the Canadian Engineering foresight for the world to witness.

    5) Failed caudron lighting on opening, another Canadian Miracle to enjoy for years to come.

    6) Olympic game of BLAME just started by VANOC !

  • he was the only guy that wiped out out of how many?? and everyone had how many test runs??

  • if he was your friend, you wouldn't ask those questions. One death is too many. Don't play the number games.

Read my #6 and u are in it.

  • @AzerChristians Who should you blame for cancellations due to weather? It's not a perfect world and I think you are missing the whole point here... Grow up!

  • Prayers 2 your friends and family

  • thank you for a decent slide show that shows what happened. finally i have an idea of what went wrong!

  • Thank you. My goal has been reached because everybody are deeply sad and need to understand what really happened. And we all needed a simple list to internationnaly express our sandness and grieving. As this space is moderated people feel confident ro express themselves openly because impolite or disgracefull comments are removed.

  • Thanks for putting this up, and sticking to removing disrespectful comments because there is nothing worse than people complaining or fighting over the death of a great athlete

  • RIP from Canada. May your soul rest in peace brother!

  • R.I.P

  • R.I.P.

pourquoi sa prend toujours quelqun qui se fait mal avant qui change de quoi

  • C'est très triste.

  • r.i.p. from england

  • Now the ski jump is different

when your launching at 60 mph off an ice slide and flying through the air at 22 ft you don't have much choice for safety

just have to hope you land on those 2 skies

  • why not have safety straps that would wrap around the legs, and waist??

    like luge seat belts??

these guys are levitating on that thing

no wonder they fly off of it

don't these dumb ass officials know anything??

    geeez

  • Nodar was my friend, i'm an athlet and had to start 5 sleeds after this accident happend! no one want to know how we athlets feeld!!! tragic!!! The bigest problem is that even if you crash , the track must be build so you can't jump out of it! i say that even if it was his fault it was only 25 procent , the rest is the track! the track must be safe!!! RIP nodar, i'll always think of you !!!

  • @macoveibogdanernest This is one of the testimony that I value the most because you know the luge and you take those risks. You know exactly was is going on when someone is performing that sport. Thank you for the time you took to share your friendship concerning Nodar with us. God Bless You. You are our heroes and don't be shy to leave your name so we will follow your career. Thank you again. We are grieving with you.

  • @macoveibogdanernest Again thank you also for your technical point of view :

    - if you crash , the track must be build so you can't jump out of it

    - even if it was his fault it was only 25 %

    - the track was for 75% of the problem

We admire also your personal courage to start 5 sleeds after this accident

  • @macoveibogdanernest Sorry, I didn't realized that you gave your complete name. I am adding you on my FaceBook list and I invite everybody to encourage your sport career.

  • You could be landing into a mountain of pillows and mattresses at 92 MPH but it will still hurt like hell.

  • @karanok

He would have still died. A better solution would have been to not have the beams so close to the track and have padded walls that curved along the path.

  • it was bound to happen sooner or later, i mean just look at what your doing, going down an ice ramp thing at high speeds because... its fun??? Its to bad he had to die and all, but really, with what he was doing it was only a matter of time, oh well lifes a bitch.

  • mybabbas1 how he died was he banged into a (MEDAL STEEL) pole and it hit his back and head thats how he died R.I.P.

  • it dont show anything but he fell over the side

    +how did he die

    .

  • R.I.P. such a tragedy from the USA.

  • RIP

  • well an accident like this hasnt happened before so i dout they would have thought that sum one would hit that pole ,thats like sayin why dont they put something realy soft round a tree so when a car hits it t just bounces off isnt it

  • No its not, its nothing like that! The course was designed a lot faster than any other course in the world!

So instead of compaing to cars driving on a road, you'd be better off comparing to race cars on a circuit. And they do have countermeasures to reduce the risk of death if cars come off the course.

Either way, the top speeds on the track is around 145km/h and the walls are what? 2/3 foot high? They shoulda thought that someone might just fall off the course.

  • ABC NEWS . COM has the real video

  • @BackUpDaniel you cant hit anything at 90mph and it not kill you

  • R.I.P from Canada

  • omg .. rip

  • rip from chile :(

  • R.I.P

  • R.I.P From Hungary :(

  • R.I.P. from Switzerland - Georgians...

  • R.I.P. on pillars need to be soft matress or something soft

  • True that, but i would say he still might have died with the speed he was going, they need to have better safety regulations and stuff like that around a course where your going very fast. its very sad :( RIP!

  • what a sin.

  • Nodar looked tense from the very beginning. He sensed something awful! and right before the crash his face is visibly full of terror. I can't imagine what went through his mind but I'm almost certain he knew this was it. He was a very experienced luger and he happened to called his father shortly before this second run and expressed how uneasy he felt on this track. It took a tragedy as horrific as this for something to be done.

  • @1martuska I share the same feeling when I look at his facial expression, he.appears to be really thoughtful and maybe afraid because he had fallen in the trial that preceded the fatal accident. But this is just my subjective impression. I have no scientific certitude about that .

  • who would put poles next to a track? let alone right next to a high speed turn? i never seen the video yet but this is enough to say who ever built the course should be charged of murder and stupidity. its a sad death and he was still really young and went too soon, r.i.p.

  • RIP

  • Like high speed flight, this is inherently dangerous. I am not sure what genius put solid poles right next to the track. RIP champion. You will not be forgotten.

  • at 1:24 he is still alive. and all a person wants to do is somehow stop him from hitting that was. im 19 and im never gonna forget this. if i live a 100 years.when i die. and i hope heaven is real. i wanna meet this man. i wanna talk to him.

  • @elmin911 I hope you will live a long life. I also hope you will teach your children what happend in a car or on a bike, when the human body hit something at 90 mph. Because very often our kids have the tendency to believe that they can easily survive at that speed and get out from it with a just a broken rib or a broken leg.

  • And they're Covering it up,to preserve the 2010 Olympics.

  • no sht... my condolences.....

  • RIP DUDE WE MISS U

  • Like many other sports, the enveloped is pushed until there's a disaster. Bull riders now use body vest since a bull stuck a horn thru a guys chest.Race horses break legs until the racing board change rules. Then there's the "running of the Bulls" in Spain".Danger is always a component in extreme sports, however, in my humble opinion, the design of this track seem problematic even to the layman.(sp)Adrenalin is very addictive. All observations aside, it is heartbreaking that this young man died.

  • R.I.P.

  • how did he die or hit his head if he has a helmet?!?! helmet couldnt have left to a such major injury!!

  • 92 mph may have bearing.....

  • @HMFAB i think it was the impact of the crash he hit a steel pole at 90mph most liky breaking his spine

  • Did you see the crash', 90 miles/hour and his back hit a metal column, I hear the metal bending in the video. no way someone can survive this

  • hitting a fixed metal pole at 90mph, no helmet in the world is going to save you. You can't decelerate from 90 to 0mph in a split second and survive.

RIP Nodar, this shouldn't have been able to happen.

  • So tragic... RIP Nodar.
