This is what happens when you buy multiple clownfish that are the same size- they have to fight for dominance- if you buy 2 that arent a mated pair make sure one is smaller than the other- theyll still establish dominance but will be only a few small spats instead of them beating each other up for prolonged time frame. I bought my true percs as a mated pair-never fought once, theyve never left each other while awake and since the anemone got introduced they sleep together in it every night.
all you people's ignorance amazes me. This is life, it happens and it will correct itself. Nothing to worry about the 2 fish that are fighting arent neccesarily 2 females the female might not have accepted the breeding male just yet. Give it time
Basically this is it. All this particular video is most likely irresponsible stocking. Clowns live in groups They go on a dominance system, the little males will turn into a female when they are the most dominant clown in the group ( tank ) when pairing it is normal to see aggression such as some nipping, poking and flashing to set the dominance order, but when you throw two females together they will both fight to possibly kill unless one is completely beat and manages to turn back into a male.
Seeing alot of differing oppinions here in the comments. So... What are the actual ground rules? Would it be possible to have one species of clowns on one side of the tank and another on the other side, maybe put 2 different species of anenome's (one one each end of the tank)to keep them away from eachother????
i dont get it, a guy at a pet store told me clownfish need 2 live with at least 2 or more of the same type and that they will live with any other type of clownfish
My female just lost her mate. So we went and got a tiny young clownfish to replace it. Well, the female is not too happy. IT's not as bad as your problem but it's pretty bad. I hope it resolves. I learned a lot from peoples comments here.
he has 2 males and a female. The males are fighting for the rights of the female. Very common. keeping clowns in 3 is hard because 2 males will square off, with 2 there is no fighting and with more than 3 you are likely to get 2 females and 2 males
I have to say I disagree a bit. Usually, only one clown is the female and it is usually the dominate one in the group. If anything, two females would fight for supremacy.
looks like another clown is challenging for the right to become female. it will probably resovle itself in time, but if it starts to get reall nasty they should be separated.

They are competing because none of them wants to be the male, because the male is smaller

That's very dangerous for a tank to hold more than 1 clownfish because clownfish usually fight most of the time for it's own terrirtory and rights.

i don't think you can have 2 females (for long) as they change gender, with the larger one becomming female, and the smaller one(s) males
hc8719 5 years ago
you must have two females.
