I had one of those, probably Christmas of '64. I loved it. This stands out from my youth along with a Gilbert Toys James Bond Aston Martin DB5, Vroom bike motor, Vroom car (by Mattel). I would play with it every day.
@noellamine Yes, Christmas 1964 was the best Christmas for me. I always wanted that varoom bike motor. Never did get it but my cousin had one. It was a real cool toy.
My parengts took mine to the beach with us-it got salt water and sand in it-big bruiser need another to help him out! The wrecked car toy lasted much longer and I played with it more-went great with my "beer can" Tonkas!
Had one back in 1966 this toy was ahead of its time.it worked just like a real tow truck.wish i still had this and all my gas powered cox toys.the good old days
I hated that car with the damn flat tire. Even when I was a kid I thought, why am I going to put this flat tire on this car when all I'll have to do is take it back off and put the good tire back on? I didn't spend much time playing with that car with the flat tire, but I loved the Big Bruiser though.
yep. had one of these too. christmas '67 or '68. had the blue pick up. I think my parents gave it away when we moved from winnipeg to b.c. in '69. same with my brothers blue metal batmobile with a red interior.
Thats good old Claude Kirchner , the annaouncer for Marx toys, Remember Terrytune Circus with Clownie ,channel 9 WOR NYC, AT 7 PM , weedays ,it was on for years. He was a wonderful host on all of his shows, I think Hasbro gobbled up all the old toy companies from the 1960's.
Mom probably went on a cleaning spree and tossed it. In my case, I blew it up with an M-80. Stupid move on my part, I ended up paying $400. Thirty years later to get another one.
Don't be too broken hearted. You can still pick them up on E-Bay once in a while. Mostly around Christmas Time. Prices are getting hefty these days though. I Saw one last year go for $550. Complete with the box and tools. Joe
@gomangojoe, Funny you would mention that, because I just won won n eBay for $300.00. One of my cousins had it with the truck in which the undamaged left front fender could be replaced with the smashed front fender (he replaced the left front fender with the smashed version!).
@gomangojoe, Funny you would mention that, because I just won one on Bay for $300.00. One of my cousins had it with the truck in which the undamaged left front fender could be replaced with the smashed front fender (he replaced the left front fender with the smashed version!).

Too cool! I still have my Big Bruiser tow truck and some of the tools it came with...I have no idea what happened to the crashed car it came with though!
My dad took an old 8 mm film of me playing with my Big Bruiser Christmas morning. I think it was closer to 1964 or 1965. To this day I wonder whatever happened to that toy. It just seemed to disappear. I had a grey pickup with it and I do remember the fender coming off the PU truck and the wheel also. Anyone here have any idea how much it cost back then? I'd be curious to know.
Thats Cool. Do you still have the 8MM film? You should convert it to DVD before the film deteriorates. I would like to see the film. You should post it to youtube.
As for the price of the Big Bruiser, I will have to get to my storage unit and check out my boxes. I think I have one with a price tag on it. I would guess they were around $10 or $12. I have a Johnny Seven OMA Gun in my display case and that has an original price tag on it of $6.50.
Did anyone have a Big Boss car carrier? I had the Big Bruiser and the Big Boss. The Big Boss was the same scale as the Big Bruiser( had the same Ford Cab-Over), but was a Semi- it had a car-carrier trailer and four plastic cars. Bottom section of trailer had a motorized conveyor that automatically loaded cars!
I have 2 Big Boss Car Carriers. I even have the original box with one of them. The box is very cool and ultra rare. The box is so big, everyone usually threw them out.
I had a Big Boss as a kid. I loved the conveyor feature, and the fact that you could remove the car's tires, since they were held on by small acorn nuts. Remember the "flat" tire, lol?
Yup.. I had one too! The bumper and fender on the pickup were spring loaded. When you simulated a collusion, they would pop loose just like in real life. I didn't have the heart to tell my parents I was a little too old for this toy (11) but, I had fun with is and hid it in the closet when my friends came over.
I had one of these toys. My fave for a long time. I had the tan truck but I live in Canada. My dad went to Detroit often so maybe that is where he picked one up.
I'm sure it was '65 because I remeber this ad and got one for christmas that year. The "wreck" truck had two bumpers -one looked crushed like an accident and you could take it off and "repair" it by replacing it with the new "fixed" one. The wreck pick-up was grey blue if memory serves.
Correct, Most Canadian Versions of the Big Job that I have seen, had the Blue Pick-Up. The Tan Pick-up seems to be the most common in the USA version.
Marx toys was the greatest toy company ever, you are talking quality and creativity, they don't make em like Marx did and they never will again. Mattel who?
Hey oclock57! I know what you mean. People think I'm crazy collecting old toys. I have to tell you that every time I see or play with an old toy from my past, it brings back all the good times and carefree days of being a kid.

I loved my Big Bruiser! Mom kept telling me not to leave it outside. Alas, someone "toed" it away. It broke my heart.

Looks like it's based on the long manufactured Ford "Commercial Cab" design.
